1166 - Abdullah bin Umar narrated from Zaida, from Abu Ishaq, from al-Alaa bin Arar, who said: Ibn Umar was asked about Ali and Uthman, and he replied: "As for Ali, do not ask about him; look at his position with the Messenger of Allah. He blocked our doors in the mosque and upheld his own." "As for Uthman, he committed a great sin on the day the two armies met, but Allah forgave him. He committed a lesser sin among you, and you killed him."

Al-Tabarani - al-Mu'jam al-Awsat - Chapter on the letter Meem - Those Named Muhammad
Volume: (7) - Page Number: (208)
7291 - Muhammad ibn Abbas al-Akhram al-Isbahani narrated to us, who said: Umar ibn Muhammad ibn al-Hasan al-Asadi narrated to us, from his father, from Ala ibn Zuhair, from Wabra ibn Abd al-Rahman, who said: We were with Abdullah ibn Umar when a man from the people of Kufa asked him, saying: "O Aba Abd al-Rahman, tell me about Uthman ibn Affan. Did he witness the Battle of Badr?" He said: "No." The man said: "Allahu Akbar!" He said: "Tell me, did Uthman take charge on the day the two groups met?" He said: "Yes." The man replied: "Allahu Akbar!" He continued: "Tell me, did Uthman witness the Day of the Treaty of Ridwan?" He said: "No." The man exclaimed: "Allahu Akbar!" Then he turned to leave, and I said to him: "Stay with me. That man is from the people of Kufa, and they love Ali and bear animosity toward Uthman." He said: "Bring the man to me," so he was brought. Abdullah ibn Umar said: "You asked me about Uthman witnessing Badr, and I told you no, and I will explain that. The daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) was ill, and the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said to him, 'Stay behind with my daughter.' Uthman replied, 'I do not wish to.' The Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said, 'Then she would prefer it if you stayed with her,' and he regarded it as having the same reward as if he had witnessed it and gave him a share." The man repeated: "Allahu Akbar!" "As for your statement that he was among those who took charge on the day the two groups met, Allah has informed us that He has forgiven them." The man said again: "Allahu Akbar!" "And regarding your statement that he did not witness the Treaty of Ridwan, the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent Uthman to the people of Mecca, and when he was commanded to pledge allegiance, the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said, 'O Allah, Uthman is in need of You and the need of Your Messenger,' and he raised his hand, saying, 'This is my hand, and this is Uthman's hand,' striking one hand with the other, so he pledged allegiance for him." This hadith was not narrated from Wabra except by Ala ibn Zuhair, and it was singularly transmitted by Muhammad ibn al-Hasan.

Al-Tabarani - al-Mu'jam al-Awsat - Chapter on the letter Meem - Those Named Mu'adh
Volume: (8) - Page Number: (232)
8494 - Mu'adh narrated to us, who said: Ishaq narrated to us, who said: Abd al-Wahid ibn Ziyad narrated to us, who said: Kulaib ibn Wa'il narrated to us, from Hani' ibn Qays, who said: I was sitting next to Ibn Umar when a man came to him and said: "O Abu Abd al-Rahman, tell me about Uthman. Did he witness Badr?" He said: "No." The man said: "Did he witness the Pledge of Ridwan?" He said: "No." The man asked: "Was he among those who acted as leaders on the day the two armies met?" He said: "Yes." The man then turned away, and the man said to Abdallah ibn Umar: "This one is now going to inform people that you spoke ill of Uthman." He said: "Did he do that?" The man replied: "Yes, this is what he claimed." Abdallah said to the man: "Return and tell him to come back." So they called the man back, and Abdallah asked him: "Do you know what you just said?" The man replied: "I asked you if Uthman witnessed Badr, and you said no. I asked you if he witnessed the Pledge of Ridwan, and you said no. I also asked you if he was among those who acted as leaders on the day the two armies met, and you said yes." Abdallah said: "Indeed, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said on the day of Badr: 'Uthman was delayed due to a need of Allah and a need of His Messenger.'" Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) struck for him with his hand, showing that he was still valued, and did not strike for anyone else who was absent with a share, except for him. He also sent Uthman on the day of the Pledge of Ridwan to Mecca to ask for permission regarding the sacrificial animals and to enter Mecca. Uthman pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) in the Pledge of Ridwan while intending to enter Mecca, and he said: "Uthman is in the service of Allah and His Messenger," and that "I will pledge allegiance to Allah on his behalf." He then clapped one hand over the other. Allah said: {Indeed, those who turned back among you on the day the two armies met, it was only Satan who caused them to slip because of some of what they had earned, and Allah had certainly forgiven them. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Forbearing} (Surah Ali 'Imran 3:155). "So go, for Allah has forgiven," he said, "and now go and strive against him as best as you can." None of those who narrated this hadith in this chain between Kulaib ibn Wa'il and Habib ibn Abi Muliqah, except Abd al-Wahid ibn Ziyad. Ziyad also narrated it, along with others, from Kulaib ibn Wa'il, from Habib ibn Abi Muliqah, from Ibn Umar. Habib ibn Abi Muliqah was known by the kunyah Abu Thawr al-Hudhani and was from the Murad tribe.
