- Sa'id ibn Uthman al-Ansari al-Zurqi, brother of 'Uqbah, narrated that Muhammad ibn Ishaq reported from Yahya ibn Ubad ibn Abdullah ibn al-Zubair, from his father, from Abdullah ibn al-Zubair, from al-Zubair, who said: "By Allah, I swear I could hear the words of Mu'tab ibn Qusheir, my brother from the Banu Amr ibn Awf, while drowsiness was overcoming me. I could hear him only as if in a dream when he said: 'If we had any say in the matter, we would not be killed here.'" Then he recited: {Indeed, those who turned away from you on the day the two armies met were caused to stumble by Satan because of some of what they had earned, and Allah had surely forgiven them. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Forbearing} (Surah Al-Imran 3:155). So, those whom Satan caused to stumble and then Allah forgave are: Uthman ibn Affan, Sa'id ibn Uthman, and Alqamah ibn Uthman.

Ibn Mandah said: He was mentioned in the context of himself and his companions: {Indeed, those who turned back among you on the day the two armies met, it was Satan who caused them to slip because of some [misdeeds] they had earned, and Allah has certainly forgiven them. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Forbearing} (Surah Al-Imran 3:155).
