36277 - Also: From Shaqiq who said: Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf met al-Walid ibn Uqbah, and al-Walid said to him, "What is it with you? I see that you have become harsh with the Commander of the Faithful, Uthman." Abd al-Rahman replied, "Let him know that I did not flee on the Day of Aynayn," meaning the Day of Uhud, "nor did I remain behind on the Day of Badr, nor did I abandon the Sunnah of Umar." So he went and informed Uthman of this. Uthman said,
"As for his statement that I did not flee on the Day of Aynayn, how can he hold that against me when Allah has forgiven me?" Then he recited: {Indeed, those who turned back among you on the day the two armies met, it was only Shaytan who caused them to slip because of some of what they had earned, and Allah had certainly forgiven them. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Forbearing} (Surah Al-Imran 3:155). "And as for his statement that I remained behind on Badr, I was indeed caring for Ruqayyah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), until she died, and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) had given me a share, as he did to everyone who was given a share by the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), and such a person has witnessed. And as for his statement that I did not uphold the Sunnah of Umar, I cannot bear it, nor can he." So go and tell him that.
