- Abu Sulaym narrated to us: Abu Salih Muhammad ibn Ibrahim told us, saying: Ibrahim ibn Mansur narrated to us, saying: Abu Bakr ibn al-Muqri narrated to us, from my father Ya'qub ibn Ya'la narrated to us, from Namir ibn Abi Ubaydah, who said: My father narrated to us, from al-A'mash, from Shu'aib, who said: There was some exchange between Uthman and Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf, and Abd al-Rahman sent to Uthman, "By Allah, I did not flee from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) on the Day of 'Aynayn," meaning Uhud, "nor did I stay behind from Badr, nor did I go against the Sunnah of Umar." So Uthman sent back to him, "As for your claim that I stayed behind from Badr, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) occupied me." Sulayman said: She was able to fulfill her obligations. "And as for your claim that I fled on the Day of 'Aynayn, you are right; Allah has forgiven me." Regarding the Sunnah of Umar, by Allah, neither I nor you could manage it."
- Abu Abdullah Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Abi 'Uthman narrated to us, saying: Ahmad ibn Uthman ibn al-Fadl narrated to us, saying: Ubaydullah ibn Muhammad ibn Ishaq narrated to us, saying: Abdullah ibn Muhammad narrated to us, from Yusuf ibn Musa, from Abdullah al-Juhani, meaning al-Razi, from Amr ibn Abi Qays, from Asim, from Abu Wa'il, who said: Al-Walid ibn Uqbah met me with a man whose name he mentioned, and Al-Walid said to him: "You have been rude to the Commander of the Faithful," meaning Uthman. The man replied, "Tell him that I did not flee on the Day of Hunayn," and that I did not stay behind from Badr, nor did I go against the Sunnah of Umar. Uthman said, "As for his statement that I fled on the Day of Hunayn, he does not blame me for a sin that Allah has forgiven," and he read: {“Indeed, those who turned back among you on the day the two armies met, it was Satan who caused them to slip by [some] of what they had earned, and indeed, Allah had forgiven them. Allah is Forgiving and Forbearing”} (Surah Al-Imran 3:155).
- And Abdullah narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn al-Junayd and Muhammad ibn Ali and others said: They were all narrated to us by Ma'awiya ibn Amr, who said: Zaydah narrated to us from Asim, from Shu'aib, who said: Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf met Al-Walid ibn Uqbah, and Al-Walid said to him: "What is it that I see you have been rude to the Commander of the Faithful, Uthman?" Abd al-Rahman replied, "Tell him that I did not flee on the Day of 'Aynayn," and Asim added, "which was on the Day of Uhud," and that I did not stay behind on the Day of Badr, nor did I go against the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny). So he went to inform Uthman. Uthman said, "As for his statement about the Day of 'Aynayn, how can he blame me for a sin that Allah has forgiven?" He said, Exalted is He: {“Indeed, those who turned back among you on the day the two armies met, it was Satan who caused them to slip by [some] of what they had earned, and indeed, Allah had forgiven them. Allah is Forgiving and Forbearing”} (Surah Al-Imran 3:155).

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) struck for him a share." And as for the Pledge of Ridwan, it was that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent him to the people of Mecca, and if anyone could have been more trustworthy in himself than Uthman, he would have been sent. And the pledge took place while Uthman was absent." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "My hand is this for Uthman," and he struck one hand with the other. He said, "O Ibn Umar, I will ask you about something or remind you, or I remind you by the sanctity of this house. Do you know that Uthman fled on the day of Uhud?" Ibn Umar replied, "Yes." He continued, "Do you know that he was absent from Badr and did not witness it?" Ibn Umar said, "Yes." He asked, "And do you know that he was absent from the Pledge of Ridwan?" Ibn Umar said, "Yes."
