- Abu al-Faraj Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Umar ibn Qudamah al-Maqdisi narrated to us in Damascus, as did Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Ishaq ibn al-Anmati in Egypt, both saying: Abu al-Yaman Zayd ibn al-Hasan al-Kindi narrated to us, saying: Al-Qadi Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Abd al-Baqi al-Ansari narrated to us, saying: Al-Hasan ibn Ali al-Jawhari narrated to us, saying: Abu al-Husayn Muhammad ibn al-Mudhaffar al-Hafiz narrated to us, saying: Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn Sulayman al-Baghandi narrated to us, saying: Abu Nu'aim Ubayd ibn Hisham al-Halabi narrated to us, saying: Al-Fazari narrated to us from Kulaib ibn Wa'il, from Hani ibn Qays, from Habib ibn Abi Mulaykah, who said: I was sitting with Abdullah ibn Umar when a man came to him and said: O Abu Abd al-Rahman, did you witness Uthman at the Bai'at al-Ridwan? He said: No. The man said: Did he witness the Day of Badr? He said: No. The man said: Was he among those who turned away on the day the two armies met? He said: Yes. So the man left, and it was said to Ibn Umar: This one will go back to his companions and tell them you spoke ill of Uthman. He said: Did he? He said: That is what he says. Ibn Umar replied: Bring me the man. So they brought him. Ibn Umar said: Do you remember what I said to you? He said: Yes. I asked you about this, and you said that, and I asked you about that, and you said this. Ibn Umar said: As for the Bai'at al-Ridwan, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent him to the people of Mecca to ask their permission to enter Mecca, but they refused. So the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) stood and said: Verily, Uthman is in the service of Allah and the service of His Messenger, and he (Uthman) took the pledge. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) clapped one hand on the other. As for the Day of Badr, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) stood and said: Indeed, Uthman has gone on an errand for Allah and an errand for His Messenger. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) struck for him a share and did not strike for anyone else who was absent, except for him. Then he recited to him: {Indeed, those who turned back among you on the day the two armies met, it was only Satan who caused them to slip because of some of what they had earned, and Allah had certainly forgiven them. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Forbearing} (Surah Al-Imran 3:155). Then he said: Go now and strive with all your effort.

- .... Ibn Umar said: "Uthman committed a great sin on the day the two gatherings met at Uhud, but Allah forgave him," and he (Ibn Umar) added, "and he (Uthman) sinned among you a small sin, and you killed him." He was asked about Ali and Uthman, and he replied to the questioner: "May Allah curse you! You are asking me about two men, both of whom are better than me, wanting me to belittle one and praise the other."

- Abu Ishaq ibn al-Durjati told us, saying: Abu Ja'far al-Saydalani informed us, along with a group, who said: Fatimah bint Abdullah informed us, saying: Abu Bakr ibn Raydhah informed us, and they said: Abu al-Qasim al-Tabarani informed us, saying: Ahmad ibn Ishaq al-Khashab al-Ruqi narrated to us, saying: Abdullah ibn Ja'far narrated to us, saying: Ubaydullah ibn Amr narrated to us, from Zayd ibn Abi Anisa, from Abu Ishaq, from al-'Alaa ibn 'Arar, who said: Ibn Umar was asked about Ali and Uthman and said: "As for Ali, do not ask me about him. Look at his place from the place of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny). He closed the doors of our houses in the mosque and left his own door open. As for Uthman, he committed a grave sin on the day the two armies met, but Allah forgave him. He committed a sin among you that was lesser than that, and you killed him." This was narrated from the hadith of Shubay'ah, Zuhayr, and Isra'il, from Abu Ishaq.
