- .... Dr. Marsden Jones says in the introduction to his edition of al-Waqidi's book on the expeditions (al-Maghazi): In the manuscript that we have used as the basis for this publication, there is a list of those who fled from the Prophet on the Day of Uhud, starting with these words:
"And among those who turned was so-and-so," and al-Harith ibn Hadhib, Thalabah ibn Hadhib, Suwad ibn Ghayziyah, Sa'd ibn Uthman, Uqbah ibn Uthman, and Khawjah ibn Amir, reaching Mallel and Aws ibn Qaythi in a group from Banu Harithah. Meanwhile, the text in Ibn Abi al-Hadid has Umar
and Uthman instead of so-and-so, and al-Baladhuri narrates from al-Waqidi that it was Uthman without mentioning Umar. It is clear that the text in the original manuscript
mentioned Uthman and Umar, or Umar alone, or Uthman alone, among those who turned their backs on the Day of Uhud, but the copyist did not accept this regarding Umar or Uthman and replaced their names or one of their names with the term: so-and-so.
