- Abu Hilal al-Askari said in his book Al-Awwa'il: The supplication of Ali (peace be upon him) was answered regarding Uthman and Abd al-Rahman, for they did not die except as adversaries, in a state of mutual enmity. Abd al-Rahman sent to Uthman to confront him and told his messenger: Tell him: I entrusted you with what I did of the affairs of the people, and I have matters that concern me: I witnessed Badr, but did not see it, and I witnessed the Pledge of Ridwan, but did not see it
and I fled on the Day of Uhud but remained patient. Uthman replied to his messenger: Tell him: As for the Day of Badr, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent me back to his daughter because of her illness, and I had intended to participate in what I had set out for. I met him at his return, and he gave me glad tidings of a reward equal to yours and gave me a share similar to your shares. As for the Pledge of Ridwan, he (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent me to ask permission from Quraysh for his entry into Mecca. When it was said to him, "I am killed," he pledged allegiance to the Muslims for death based on what he heard from me," and he said, "If he is alive, then I will pledge allegiance on his behalf." He clasped one hand over the other and said, "My left hand is better than the right hand of Uthman. Is your hand better or the hand of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny)?"
As for your patience on the Day of Uhud and my flight, this was indeed the case, and Allah the Exalted revealed the absolution of me in His Book, so you reproached me with a sin that Allah forgave me, while you have forgotten your own sins, of which you are unaware. Do you not know if they will be forgiven or not?
