- Abu Hilal al-Askari said in his book Al-Awwa'il: The supplication of Ali (peace be upon him) was answered regarding Uthman and Abd al-Rahman, for they did not die except as adversaries, in a state of mutual enmity. Abd al-Rahman sent to Uthman to confront him and told his messenger: Tell him: I entrusted you with what I did of the affairs of the people, and I have matters that concern me: I witnessed Badr, but did not see it, and I witnessed the Pledge of Ridwan, but did not see it and I fled on the Day of Uhud but remained patient. Uthman replied to his messenger: Tell him: As for the Day of Badr, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent me back to his daughter because of her illness, and I had intended to participate in what I had set out for. I met him at his return, and he gave me glad tidings of a reward equal to yours and gave me a share similar to your shares. As for the Pledge of Ridwan, he (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent me to ask permission from Quraysh for his entry into Mecca. When it was said to him, "I am killed," he pledged allegiance to the Muslims for death based on what he heard from me," and he said, "If he is alive, then I will pledge allegiance on his behalf." He clasped one hand over the other and said, "My left hand is better than the right hand of Uthman. Is your hand better or the hand of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny)?" As for your patience on the Day of Uhud and my flight, this was indeed the case, and Allah the Exalted revealed the absolution of me in His Book, so you reproached me with a sin that Allah forgave me, while you have forgotten your own sins, of which you are unaware. Do you not know if they will be forgiven or not?

- .... Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas said to him: "Do you say this in regard to the beloved ones of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny)?" He replied, "And what concern is it of yours what is happening here?" Then he turned towards Sa'd, intending to strike him, but Sa'd slipped away and left the mosque. عثمان (Uthman) followed him and met Ali (peace be upon him) at the mosque gate. Ali (peace be upon him) said to him: "Where are you intending to go?" He said: "I want to confront this one who did such and such" - meaning Sa'd, and was insulting him. Ali (peace be upon him) said to him: "O man, let this go." Then they continued to exchange words until they became angry, and Uthman said: "Aren't you the one whom the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) appointed to follow him on the Day of Tabuk?" Ali (peace be upon him) replied: "Aren't you the one who fled from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) on the Day of Uhud?"

- .... And he remained steadfast in the situations where hearts faltered and minds became bewildered, including the day of Uhud and his stand after all the Muslims had fled and only four were left with him: Ali, al-Zubayr, Talha, and Abu Dujana.

- .... Yahya ibn Salamah ibn Kuhayl narrated, saying: I asked my father, "How many remained firm with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) on the day of Uhud?" He said, "Two." I asked, "Who are they?" He said, "Ali and Abu Dajanah."

- .... I said: There is a difference of opinion regarding whether Umar ibn al-Khattab was steadfast that day or not, while all narrators unanimously agree that Uthman did not remain steadfast.
- .... And this was narrated by Muhammad ibn Ishaq and others, and they did not disagree on that; rather, they only differed on whether he struck him with a spear while he was a fleeing, panicked man, or while he was a steadfast, positioned one. Those who narrated that he struck him with a spear while he was fleeing did not claim that he fled when Uthman fled, nor to the direction that Uthman fled to.
- .... Many hadith scholars narrated: that Uthman came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) after three days and asked him where he had reached. He replied, "To the al-A'raj," and he said, "You have gone far in it."

- al-Waqidi narrated that during the caliphate of Uthman, there was an exchange between him and Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf, and Abd al-Rahman sent for al-Walid ibn Uqba. He called him and said: Go to your brother and convey to him what I say, for I do not know anyone else who can deliver it to him. Al-Walid replied: I will do so. Abd al-Rahman continued: Tell him that Abd al-Rahman says to you, "I witnessed Badr while you did not, I stood firm on the Day of Uhud, and you were in command. I also witnessed the pledge of Ridwan while you did not." When he informed him, Uthman said: "My brother speaks the truth. I stayed back from Badr because of the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), who was ill. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) struck me with a share and granted me a reward, so I was in the position of one who attended Badr and I was in command on the Day of Uhud, and Allah forgave me in His definitive Book." When al-Walid came to Abd al-Rahman with what he had said, Abd al-Rahman replied: "My brother speaks the truth."

- .... Al-Waqidi said: And Umar looked at Uthman ibn Affan and said: "He is one of those whom Allah has forgiven, and they are the ones who took charge on the day the two groups met." By Allah, Allah did not forgive anything only to have it returned.
- .... And a man asked Abdullah ibn Umar about Uthman, and he said: "He committed a grave sin on the Day of Uhud, but Allah forgave him," and he committed a minor sin among you, and you killed him.

- .... And he was among those whom Umar and Uthman appointed, and al-Harith ibn Hatib, and Tha'alabah ibn Hatib, and Suwad ibn Ghaziyyah, and Sa'd ibn Uthman, and Uqbah ibn Uthman, and Kharijah ibn Umar, along with Milal and Aws ibn Qaythi in a group from the Banu Harithah who reached al-Shuqrah. Umm Ayman met them, scattering dust in their faces and saying to some of them: "Here is the spindle, take it and spin with it, come on."
