Chapter on Clarifying the Problematic Matters Related to What Was Narrated from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) in the Case He Exempted from the Doors That Were Leading to His Mosque, and He Ordered Them to Be Closed, Except for That One Door
Volume: (9) - Page Number: (188)
3558 - Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Dawud narrated to us, saying: Al-Walid ibn Salih al-Nakhas narrated to us, saying: Ubaydullah ibn Amr al-Raqi narrated to us, from Zayd ibn Abi Unaysa, from Abu Ishaq, from al-Ayizar ibn Harith, who said: I was with Ibn Umar, and a man asked him about Ali and Uthman (may Allah be pleased with them). He said to him: As for Ali, do not ask us about him, but look at his status with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny)—he closed the doors to our mosque, except for his door. And as for Uthman, he committed a great sin on the day the two groups met, for which Allah, the Mighty and Exalted, forgave him, and he committed a minor sin, and you killed him for it.

2070 - Abu Dawood said: Abu 'Awaneh and Shayban narrated to us from Uthman ibn Abdullah ibn Muhriz from Ibn Umar, who said to a man: "As for the statement you asked me about, bear witness that Uthman witnessed Badr, for he was preoccupied with the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny)." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) struck for him a share. "And as for the Pledge of Ridwan, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent him to the people of Mecca. If anyone had been more trustworthy in his own self than Uthman, he would have sent him. The pledge took place while Uthman was absent." The Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said, "This hand of mine is for Uthman," and he struck one hand on the other. "And as for the appointment on the Day the Two Gathered, bear witness that Allah, the Almighty, has forgiven him. Take this with you."

He replied: "No." The man said: "Did he witness the Pledge of Ridwan?" He said: "No." The man asked: "Did he lead on the day the two groups met?" He answered: "Yes." Then the man went away, and it was said to Ibn Umar: "This one claims you criticized Uthman." He said: "Bring him back." So they brought him back to him, and he said to him: "Did you understand what I said to you?" The man replied: "Yes." Ibn Umar continued: "You asked me if Uthman witnessed Badr, and I told you no." The man replied: "But the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: 'O Allah, Uthman is in Your need and the need of Your Messenger.'" Ibn Umar continued: "And you asked me if he witnessed the Pledge of Ridwan, and I told you no, and that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent him to the Confederates to make peace with us and to greet us, but they refused. And the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) pledged allegiance for him and said: 'O Allah, Uthman is in Your need and the need of Your Messenger'" Then he wiped one hand with the other and pledged allegiance to him. "And you asked me if Uthman led on the day the two groups met, and I told you yes, and that Allah said: {Indeed, those who turned away from you on the Day the two groups met were only made to stumble by Satan because of some of what they had earned, and Allah had certainly pardoned them. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Forbearing" (Surah Al-Imran 3:155)} So go, and strive to the best of your ability."

5599 - Wahb ibn Baqiyah narrated to us, he said: Khalid narrated to us, from Kulaib ibn Wa'il, from Habib ibn Abi Malikah, who said: I was sitting with Ibn Umar when a man came to him and said: "Bear witness that Uthman was at Badr." He said: "No." The man said: "Then he witnessed the Pledge of Ridwan." He said: "No." The man asked: "Was he among those who turned away on the day the two armies met?" He said: "Yes." The man said: "Then go," and it was said to him: "O Abu Abd al-Rahman, that this one will tell you that you belittled Uthman." He said: "Bring him back to me." Ibn Umar said to him: "As for the day of Badr, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) left him for his need, so he excused him, and he would not have assigned shares to one who was absent. As for the Pledge of Ridwan, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent him to the people of Mecca, and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) raised his hands and wiped them over his palm, and said: 'This is for Uthman.' The hand of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) is better than the hand of Uthman. And as for the day the two armies met, Allah has forgiven them. Go and strive against him as best as you can."

6909 - Al-Hasan ibn Sufyan al-Shaybani narrated to us, who said: Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shayba narrated to us, who said: Husayn ibn Ali narrated to us, from Zaa'ida, from Kulaib ibn Wa'il, from Habib ibn Abi Malika, who said: A man asked Ibn Umar about Uthman, "Did he witness Badr?" He said, "No." The man said, "Did he witness the Pledge of Ridwan?" He said, "No." He continued, "Was he among those who took charge on the day the two armies met?" Ibn Umar replied, "Yes." The man exclaimed, "Allah is the Greatest!" and then turned away. It was said to Ibn Umar, "What will you do? This one will go and tell people you belittled Uthman." He said, "Bring him back to me." When he came, he said, "Do you remember what you asked me about?" The man replied, "I asked you if Uthman witnessed Badr, and you said no." Ibn Umar said, "Indeed, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) sent him on the day of Badr for a need of his and struck for him a share." He continued, "And you asked me if he witnessed the Pledge of Ridwan, and I said no." Ibn Umar replied, "Indeed, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) sent him on a need of his." Then he gestured with his hand to me, saying, "Which of these hands is better, the hand of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) or the hand of Uthman?" The man asked, "Was it your question whether he was among those who took charge on the day the two armies met?" Ibn Umar answered, "Yes, for Allah says:{The devil only caused them to stumble through some of what they had earned, and Allah had already forgiven them. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Forbearing} (Surah Al-Imran 3:155). Go and strive to your utmost."

- He narrated to us from Ibn Abi Shaibah who said: Yahya ibn Adam narrated to us who said: Abu Bakr ibn Iyash narrated to us from Asim ibn Abi al-Najud from Abu Wa'il who said: Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf met al-Walid ibn Uqbah, and al-Walid said to him: "Why do you not go to the Commander of the Faithful," meaning Uthman, "or come to him?" Abd al-Rahman replied to him: "Tell him that I was not absent from Badr, nor did I flee on the Day of Aiyn," meaning the Day of Uhud, "and I did not oppose the Sunnah of Umar." Al-Walid then informed Uthman (ra), who said: "As for the Day of Badr, it was only because it was in defense of the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) struck me with a share in that." "And as for the Day of Aiyn, you did not rebuke me for a sin that Allah has forgiven me," and he continued: {Indeed, those who turned back among you on the day the two armies met, it was only Shaytan who caused them to slip by some of what they had earned, and Allah had certainly forgiven them. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving, Forbearing} (Surah Al-Imran 3:155). "As for the Sunnah of Umar (ra), I swear by Allah, I do not think that either I or he could endure the Sunnah of Umar (ra).

- .... And a group of Muslims turned to flee, among them Uthman ibn Affan and Sa'd ibn Uthman and his brother Uqbah ibn Uthman from the Banu Zurayq, and Khawjah ibn Amir al-Ansari. Then Allah forgave them, and He revealed regarding them: {Indeed, those who turned away among you on the day the two armies met were caused to stumble by Satan because of some of what they had earned, and Allah had certainly forgiven them. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving, Forbearing} (Surah Al-Imran 3:155). Ibn Uqbah said they turned until they reached Bir Jarm. And we narrated from Muhammad ibn Sa'd that Abu al-Namr al-Kunani, who is the grandfather of Sharik ibn Abdullah ibn Abi Namr al-Muhaddith, witnessed Uhud with the polytheists and said: "I threw stones that day with a sling fifty times and hit them with my arrows. And I could see the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and his companions closely surrounded, and the arrows were passing to the right and left of him, falling short in front of him, and coming out behind him. Then Allah guided him to Islam."

- .... And al-Bukhari narrated from Uthman ibn Mu'hib (ra) who said: A man came from the people of Egypt and performed Hajj to the House and saw a group of people sitting. He said: Who are these people? They said: These are Quraysh. He asked: Who is the elder among them? They replied: Abdullah ibn Umar. He said: O Ibn Umar, I will ask you about something, so please inform me about it. Do you know that Uthman fled on the Day of Uhud? He said: Yes. The man continued: Do you know that he was absent from Badr and did not attend? He said: Yes. The man asked: Do you know that he was absent from the Pledge of Ridwan and did not witness it? He said: Yes. The man exclaimed: Allahu Akbar! Then Ibn Umar (ra) said: Come, let me clarify for you. As for his fleeing on the Day of Uhud, bear witness that Allah, the Exalted, forgave him and pardoned him. Allah, the Exalted, said: {Indeed, those who turned back among you on the day when the two armies met, it was Satan who caused them to slip because of some of what they had earned, and Allah had already forgiven them. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Forbearing} (Al-Imran 3:155).
