- .... And a man volunteered and entered upon Uthman in the house and debated with him about abdication, but he refused. Then he left and another entered, and then another, all of them advising him. He would exit and part from the people. Ibn Salām came and warned them, and they intended to kill him. Muhammad ibn Abi Bakr entered and debated with him for a long time about matters that need not be mentioned. Then he felt shy and left. Then foolish men entered upon him, and one of them struck him, while Nailah, his wife, fell upon him, shielding him from the blows with her hand. Then one of them struck her with a sword on her fingers, and they killed him, and his blood flowed onto the Quran. His young men came and killed some of those murderers and others, and they looted what was in the house and what was on the women, even Nailah, and they killed some of the young men among them. Then they went out to the Treasury and vandalized it.
They intended to cut off his head, but the women prevented them. Then Ibn Adīs said: "Leave him." It is said that the one who took charge of killing him was Kinānah ibn Bishr al-Najībī, and that he was stabbed by Amr ibn al-Hamaq with several stabs. 'Umayr ibn Dābi came, whose father had died in his imprisonment, and he jumped on him until he broke one of his ribs. His killing was eighteen days before the end of Dhu al-Hijjah, and he remained in his house for three days. Then Hakim ibn Hizām and Jubayr ibn Mut'im came to Ali, and he permitted them to bury him. They went out with him between maghrib and isha, with them were al-Zubayr, al-Hasan, Abu Juhm ibn Hudhayfah, and Marwan, and they buried him in Hash Kawkab, and prayers were offered for him by Jubayr, while some said Marwan, and others said Hakim. It is said that some people confronted them to prevent them from praying over him, but Ali sent for them and reprimanded them. It is said that Ali, Talha, Zayd ibn Thabit, and Ka'b ibn Malik attended his funeral.
