5179 - Abd al-Rahman ibn Udayyis, with two unmarked letters, in diminutive form, ibn Amr ibn Kulab ibn Dahman, Abu Muhammad al-Balawi Ibn Sa'd said: He accompanied the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and heard from him, and he witnessed the conquest of Egypt and was among those who marched to Osman. Ibn al-Barqi, al-Baghawi, and others said: He was one of those who pledged allegiance under the tree. Ibn Abi Hatim narrated from his father that he had companionship (with the Prophet), and so did Abdul Ghani ibn Sa'id, Abu Ali ibn al-Sakan, and Ibn Hibban. Ibn Yunus said: He pledged allegiance under the tree, witnessed the conquest of Egypt, and established a settlement there. He was one of the knights and later became the leader of the cavalry that went from Egypt to Osman during the turmoil ....

- .... The reason for his death was that Ibn Adis was one of those whom Muawiya took as hostages and imprisoned them in Palestine. They escaped from prison and were pursued until caught. A horseman caught up with Ibn Adis and Ibn Adis said to him: Woe to you, fear Allah regarding my blood, for I am one of the companions of the tree. The horseman replied, "There are many trees in the mountain," and killed him, along with Abu al-Qasim Abd al-Rahman ....

Then Ibn Adis climbed the pulpit of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), addressed the people, and led the people of Madinah in the Friday prayer. In his sermon, he said: "But Ibn Mas'ud told me that he heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) say: 'Uthman ibn Affan is like this and that,' and he spoke a word that I dislike to mention." So, I entered upon Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) while he was besieged and informed him that Ibn Adis had prayed with them. He asked me what he had said to them, and I told him. He said: "By Allah, Ibn Adis is lying. He did not hear it from Ibn Mas'ud, nor did Ibn Mas'ud ever hear it from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny)."

He would exit and part from the people. Ibn Salām came and warned them, and they intended to kill him. Muhammad ibn Abi Bakr entered and debated with him for a long time about matters that need not be mentioned. Then he felt shy and left. Then foolish men entered upon him, and one of them struck him, while Nailah, his wife, fell upon him, shielding him from the blows with her hand. Then one of them struck her with a sword on her fingers, and they killed him, and his blood flowed onto the Quran. His young men came and killed some of those murderers and others, and they looted what was in the house and what was on the women, even Nailah, and they killed some of the young men among them. Then they went out to the Treasury and vandalized it. They intended to cut off his head, but the women prevented them. Then Ibn Adīs said: "Leave him." It is said that the one who took charge of killing him was Kinānah ibn Bishr al-Najībī, and that he was stabbed by Amr ibn al-Hamaq with several stabs. 'Umayr ibn Dābi came, whose father had died in his imprisonment, and he jumped on him until he broke one of his ribs. His killing was eighteen days before the end of Dhu al-Hijjah, and he remained in his house for three days. Then Hakim ibn Hizām and Jubayr ibn Mut'im came to Ali, and he permitted them to bury him. They went out with him between maghrib and isha, with them were al-Zubayr, al-Hasan, Abu Juhm ibn Hudhayfah, and Marwan, and they buried him in Hash Kawkab, and prayers were offered for him by Jubayr, while some said Marwan, and others said Hakim. It is said that some people confronted them to prevent them from praying over him, but Ali sent for them and reprimanded them. It is said that Ali, Talha, Zayd ibn Thabit, and Ka'b ibn Malik attended his funeral.

Al-Suri wrote to me from Shu'aib from Saif from Muhammad, Talhah, Abi Harithah, and Abi Uthman, who said: When it was in the month of Shawwal in the year 35, the people of Egypt set out in four groups (rafiq) under four leaders. The one describing them as fewer said, "six hundred," and the one describing them as more said, "a thousand." Among the groups were Abd al-Rahman ibn Adiyas al-Balawi, Kinanah ibn Bishr al-Laythi, Sudan ibn Hamran al-Sukuni, and Qutayrah ibn Fulaan al-Sukuni, and in charge of all the men was al-Ghafqi ibn Harb al-Akki.

- Ibn Lahi'ah said: Yazid ibn Amr al-Mu'afari told us that he heard Abu Thawr al-Fahmi say: "I came to Osman, and Ibn Adiyis ascended the pulpit of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and said: 'But Abdullah ibn Mas'ud told me that he heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) say: 'Beware that Osman is more misguided than he shows in his resentment of doing so.'" [Ibn Adiyis was referring to a threshold on the door.] So I went in to Osman and informed him, and he said: 'By Allah, Ibn Adiyis is lying; he did not hear this from Ibn Mas'ud, nor did Ibn Mas'ud hear it from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny).' This is a hadith we do not doubt is a lie, and we do not need to cast doubt on the narrators; rather, it is merely a conjecture of Ibn Adiyis.
