472 - Hisham narrated to us, who said: Layth narrated to us, who said: Zuhrah ibn Ma'bad al-Qurashi narrated to me, from Abu Salih, the freedman of Uthman ibn Affan (ra), who said: "I heard Uthman (ra) say from the pulpit, 'O people, I withheld from you a hadith I heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) out of dislike for you to disperse from me.' Then it occurred to me to tell you, so that each person may choose for themselves what they wish.' I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) say: 'A day of guarding in the way of Allah, the Exalted, is better than a thousand days in what else could be.'

559 - Hisham ibn al-Qasim narrated to us, saying: Layyith narrated to us, saying: Zuhrah ibn Ma'bad al-Qurashi narrated to us, from Abu Salih, the freedman of Uthman (ra), who said: "I heard Uthman speaking on the pulpit, saying: 'O people, I withheld from you a narration that I heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) out of reluctance for you to be separated from me.' Then it seemed right to me to inform you so that each person may choose for themselves what they wish.' I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) say: 'A day's stay in the path of Allah is better than a thousand days in any other of the places.'" Abu Sa'id, the freedman of the Banu Hashim, narrated to us, saying: Ikrimah ibn Ibrahim al-Bahili narrated to us, saying: Abdullah ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Dhubbab mentioned it.

Narrated Abu Salih, the Freed slave of Uthman :

"I heard Uthman while on the Minbar saying: 'I did not inform you about a Hadith I had heard from the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.), out of dismay that you might part from me. Then it occurred to me that I should narrate to you so that one may choose from these matters accordingly. I heard the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) saying: "(Ribat) Guarding the frontier for a day in Allah's cause is beter in status than thousand days doing other than that.'"

[Abu 'Eisa said:] This Hadith is Hasan Sahih Gharib.

Muhammad bin Ism'ail said: "Abu Salih, the freed slave of 'Uthman's name is Turkan."

2424 - Abu al-Walid narrated to us, saying: Layth ibn Sa'd narrated to us, saying: Abu Aqil Zuhra ibn Ma'bad narrated to us, from Abu Salih, the freedman of Uthman, who said: "I heard Uthman on the pulpit saying: 'I had previously kept from you a hadith I heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) because I disliked your dispersal from me.' Then it occurred to me to tell you so that each person may choose for themselves what they wish. I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) say: 'A day of staying in peace (ribat) in the cause of Allah is better than a thousand days in other than that, in terms of homes.'"

Another narration: from Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), al-Tirmidhi said: Al-Hasan ibn Ali al-Khallal narrated to us, and he said: Hisham ibn Abd al-Malik narrated to us, and he said: Al-Layth ibn Sa'd narrated to us, and he said: Abu Aqil Zuhrah ibn Ma'abid narrated from Abu Saleh, the freedman of Uthman ibn Affan, who said: I heard Uthman while he was on the pulpit saying: "I withheld from you a narration I heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) out of a dislike for you to disperse from me," then it occurred to me to inform you of it so that each person may choose for themselves what they wish." I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) say: "The value of a day of staying in the path of Allah is better than a thousand days in any other of His realms." Then al-Tirmidhi said: This is a hasan gharib hadith from this source.
