And stay quietly in your houses

Chapter on the Virtue of Aisha (ra)
Volume: (7) - Page Number: (83/84)

- .... And his statement in the hadith: (they will follow him or her) was said to refer to Ali, because he was the one whom Ammar was calling to. However, it appears that he meant Allah, and the intention behind following Him was to adhere to His divine ruling in obeying the imam and not rebelling against him. Perhaps he was alluding to the words of Allah, the Almighty, in Surah Al-Ahzab: {And stay in your houses and do not display yourselves as was the display of the ignorance of former times} (Surah Al-Ahzab 33:33), for this was a genuine command addressed to the wives of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny). This is why Umm Salamah would say: "No camel's back will move me until I meet the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny)." The excuse for this from Aisha is that she, along with Talha and Zubair, was interpreting the situation, and their intent was to bring about reconciliation among the people and to seek retribution from the murderers of Uthman (ra). Ali's (ra) position, however, was one of consensus on obedience and that the relatives of the slain should seek justice from those who could be proven to have committed the killing, under its conditions.

4669 - Abu Sa'id Ahmad ibn Yaqub al-Thaqafi narrated to me from the original of his book, saying: Al-Hassan ibn Ali ibn Shabib al-Ma'mari narrated to us, saying: Abdullah ibn Salih al-Azdi narrated to us. Muhammad ibn Sulayman ibn al-Isbahani narrated to me from Sa'id ibn Muslim al-Malaki from Umrah bint Abdul Rahman, who said: When Ali set out for Basra, he entered upon Umm Salamah, the wife of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), and she said: "Proceed in the protection of Allah and in His care, for by Allah, you are indeed on the truth, and the truth is with you. If it were not for my dislike to disobey Allah and His Messenger, for he (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) commanded us to remain in our homes, I would have accompanied you. But, by Allah, I will send with you someone who is better and dearer to me than my own self, my son Umar." These three narrations are all authentic and meet the criteria of the two Shaykhs, yet they did not narrate them.

- .... Al-Thalabi and others mentioned that Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) would weep uncontrollably whenever she recited this verse, until her headscarf became wet. It was also mentioned that when Sulda was asked, "Why do you not perform Hajj or Umrah as your sisters do?" she replied, "I have already performed Hajj and Umrah, and Allah has commanded me to remain in my house." The narrator said, "By Allah, she did not leave her chamber's door until her funeral was brought out, may Allah be pleased with her."
- .... Ibn Atiyyah said: Aisha's (may Allah be pleased with her) tears were only due to her journey during the Battle of the Camel, and at that time Ammar said to her, "Indeed, Allah has commanded you to remain in your house."

- .... There is no doubt that Aisha fully regretted her journey to Basra and her presence on the day of the Camel, and she did not think that the situation would escalate to what it became. Ibn Umara narrated from those who heard Aisha: "When you recite:{ And abide in your houses and do not display yourselves as [was] the display of the former times of ignorance }(Surah Al-Ahzab 33:33), she wept until her headscarf was soaked."

- .... And what is meant by following God's command is His legal ruling in obeying the imam and not rebelling against him. Perhaps he is alluding to His statement, exalted be He: {And abide in your homes and do not display yourselves as [was] the display of the former times of ignorance} (Surah al-Ahzab 33:33), for this is a real command addressed to the wives of the Prophet. This is why Umm Salamah would say, "No camel's back will move me until I see the Prophet," and the excuse for this from Aisha (ra) is that she, along with Talha and Zubair, was interpreting the situation differently. Their intention was to bring about reconciliation among the people and to seek retribution from the killers of Uthman (ra) al-Jami'in. Ali's (ra) perspective was to unite in obedience and for the relatives of the murdered man to seek retribution from those proven to be responsible for the killing, under its conditions. He said, "This is a good and authentic hadith," and Ahmad and al-Bukhari narrated it.

- .... And (R) would weep whenever she recited the verse: {And abide in your houses and do not display yourselves as [was] the display of the former times of ignorance} (Surah Al-Ahzab 33:33), until her tears soaked her veil.
- .... And it was reported from Aisha (R) that she said: "If Ibn Umar (R) passed by, show him to me." When he passed by her, it was said to her, "This is Ibn Umar." She said: "O Abu Abd ar-Rahman, what prevented you from forbidding me to go out?" He replied: "I saw a man who had power over you," meaning Ibn al-Zubair. So all these narrations indicate that Aisha (R) felt a complete sense of regret, and she considered her going out an event in her life. Initially, she intended to be buried in her home but then changed her mind and said: "I have caused an upheaval," so she instructed to be buried in Al-Baqi' (R).

- .... Ibn Abi Hatim narrated from Umm Na'ilah (may Allah be pleased with her) who said: Abu Barzah came and did not find Umm Wlad in the house, and they said, "She went to the mosque." And Hisham ibn Muhammad al-Kalbi narrated in his book Al-Jamal that Umm Salamah wrote to Ali (peace be upon him) from Mecca: "To begin with, Talhah and al-Zubair and their supporters, the companions of misguidance, intend to take Aisha out to Basra with them, along with Abdullah ibn Amir ibn Kurayz. They will claim that Uthman was killed unjustly and that they are seeking justice for his blood. And Allah will suffice them with His might and strength. If it were not for what Allah has forbidden us from, regarding leaving, and what He has commanded us to do, which is to remain in the house, I would not have refrained from going out to you and supporting you. However, I will send my son, whom I trust as my own self, Umar ibn Abi Sulaymah, to you, so treat him well, O Commander of the Faithful."
