24612 - Muhammad ibn Ja'far narrated to us, saying: Sh'ubah narrated to us, from Jabir, from Yazid ibn Murrah, from Lamys, who said: I asked Aisha, and she replied: I said to her, "Does a woman apply oil to beautify herself for her husband?" She said: "Remove from yourself that, for which Allah, the Mighty and Majestic be He, will not look." And a woman said to Aisha: "O my mother!" Aisha replied: "I am not your mother, but I am your sister." Aisha said: And the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) would mix the twenty (rak'ahs) with prayer and sleep, and when it was the last ten, he would roll up his sleeves, tighten his waistcloth, and prepare himself.

She replied: "You are not a mother to me." He said: "Indeed, you are my mother, whether you like it or not." She said: "Who is this that I hear speaking with you?" He replied: "Al-Ashtar." She said: "O Al-Ashtar, are you the one who wanted to kill my nephew?" He said: "I was zealous to kill him, and he was zealous to kill me, but neither of us could." She said: "By Allah, if you had killed him, you would not have succeeded." She continued: "As for you, Ammar, you know that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: 'He will only be killed by one of three: a man who kills another man and is killed for it, a man who commits adultery after having been chaste, or a man who apostatizes from Islam.'" This is a narration with a sound chain of transmission, and they did not include it in their compilations.

- .... The fifth: There is a disagreement regarding whether they are like mothers in terms of being non-mahram and the permissibility of looking at them, and two views have emerged: The first - They are non-mahram, but it is not forbidden to look at them. The second is that looking at them is forbidden because the prohibition of marrying them was only to preserve the right of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) over them.
- .... As for those whom the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) divorced during his lifetime, there is a disagreement about the permanence of this sanctity for them in three ways: The first is that this sanctity is established for them, emphasizing the sanctity of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny). The second is that it is not established for them; rather, they are like other women because the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) confirmed their immunity.
- .... Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) intended to stone a woman who was separated from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and remarried, but she said: "Why is this? The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) did not place a veil upon me, nor did he name me 'Mother of the Believers.'" So Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) refrained from her.

- .... It is said that the wives of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) are the Mothers of the Believers, with men being included without women, as evidenced by what was narrated from Masruq that a woman said to Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her): "O Ummah!" She replied: "I am not your mother; I am the mother of men." This clarifies that the meaning of the verse is that motherhood in this context denotes the impermissibility of marrying them, which is eternal, like that of mothers.

- .... His statement, may Allah be exalted, "their mothers," means in the prohibition of marrying them perpetually and the obligation to respect and honor them, but the rulings that apply to mothers will not apply to them in every aspect. For if that were the case, it would not have been permissible for anyone to marry their daughters, they would have inherited from Muslims, and it would have been allowed to be in seclusion with them. And Masruq reported from Aisha that a woman said, 'O mother!' and she replied, 'I am not your mother; I am only the mother of your men.' This hadith clarifies that the meaning of motherhood here is the prohibition of marrying them only.'

- .... And His statement, Mighty and Majestic be He: {And His Wives are their Mothers} (al-Ahzab 33:6) Two interpretations have been mentioned regarding this: one is that they are like mothers to them in terms of the necessity of showing respect and veneration, and the second is the prohibition of marrying them. It is not meant that they are like mothers in every aspect, because if that were the case, it would not be permissible for anyone to marry their daughters, as they would be sisters to the people.
