2963 - As Ibrahim ibn Abi Dawud had told us, saying: ʿIyyāsh ibn al-Walīd al-Ruqām narrated to us, from ʿAbd al-Aʿla ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿla al-Sāmī, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq, who said: ʿAbdullah ibn Abi Bakr narrated to me, from ʿUmrah, the daughter of Abdur-Rahman, from ʿAʾishah (may Allah be pleased with her), who said: When the Qur'an was revealed to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), he went out and sat on the minbar, reciting to the people what Allah had revealed: {Indeed, those who came with falsehood are a group among you. Do not think it is bad for you; rather, it is good for you} (Surah an-Nūr 24:11) up to His statement: {a great punishment} (Surah an-Nūr 24:11). Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) descended and ordered that two men and a woman be punished with their prescribed limit of eighty lashes each, and they were those who had taken part in the greater part of this matter and had spoken of the enormity: Ḥassan, and Musṭaḥ, and Ḥamnah. Abu Jaʿfar said: And also among those who adhered to this view, in addition to what we have mentioned, was ʿUrwah ibn al-Zubayr, a scholar.

He said that they were: Abdullah ibn Ubayy, and Mistah ibn Uthatha, and Hassan ibn Thabit, and Hammnah bint Jujash, the sister of Zainab bint Jujash, accused her of wrongdoing with Safwan ibn al-Mu'attal al-Sulami. - .... It is said that the punishment for false accusation (qadhf) is a right of a human being that cannot be fully enforced except upon his demand, and even if it is said to be a right of Allah, the one accused must still be consulted. Aisha did not demand it from Ibn Abi, and it is said that his punishment was left for a greater benefit, just as his death was left despite the manifestation of his hypocrisy and his speaking in ways that warranted death on several occasions. This was to reconcile his people and avoid alienating them from Islam, as he was obedient among them, a leader over them. Thus, the risk of inciting a disturbance in punishing him was not deemed safe, and he may have been left for all these reasons. So, he punished Mastih ibn Uthathah and Hassan ibn Thabit, and Hunna ibn Juhash, and these were among the believing, truthful ones, purifying them and providing atonement, while Abdullah ibn Abi was left, for he is not among those deserving that.

- .... Allah, the Almighty, said: {Indeed, those who came with the slander are a group among you} (an-Nur 24:11). All the interpreters (mufassirun) agree that this verse and the ones related to it that follow were revealed concerning the story of Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) and the Hadith of the slander. They assert that this verse and the next ten verses were revealed in the context of Aisha's story. We have mentioned the Hadith of the slander in the Book of Gardens and in the Book of al-Mughni fi al-Tafsir, but we did not lengthen our discussion on it, as our aim is to provide a concise summary of this book for easier memorization. As for the slander (ifk), it means falsehood, and a group (usbah) refers to a collective. His statement, {among you} (an-Nur 24:11), means among the believers.
