The second accused: Mastah Ibn Asaasah

Hadith No: 1

Narrated `Aisha:

... `Urwa also added, "None was mentioned as members of the slanderous group besides (`Abdullah) except Hassan bin Thabit and Mistah bin Uthatha and Hamna bint Jahsh along with others about whom I have no knowledge, but they were a group as Allah said. It is said that the one who carried most of the slander was `Abdullah bin Ubai bin Salul."

So Allah revealed the ten Verses:- - "Verily! They who spread the slander Are a gang, among you............." (24.11-20) Allah revealed those Qur'anic Verses to declare my innocence. Abu Bakr As-Siddiq who used to disburse money for Mistah bin Uthatha because of his relationship to him and his poverty, said, 'By Allah, I will never give to Mistah bin Uthatha anything after what he has said about Aisha.'

Narrated Az-Zuhri:

I heard `Urwa bin Az-Zubair, Sa`id bin Al-Musaiyab, 'Alqama bin Waqqas and 'Ubaidullah bin `Abdullah bin `Uqba relating from `Aisha, the wife of the Prophet (s.a.w.a.) the narration of the people (i.e. the liars) who spread the slander against her and they said what they said, and how Allah revealed her innocence. Each of them related to me a portion of that narration. (They said that `Aisha said), ''Then Allah revealed the ten Verses starting with:--'Verily! Those who spread the slander..' (24.11-21) All these verses were in proof of my innocence. Abu Bakr As-Siddiq who used to provide for Mistah some financial aid because of his relation to him, said, "By Allah, I will never give anything (in charity) to Mistah, after what he has said about `Aisha" Then Allah revealed:- 'And let not those among you who are good and are wealthy swear not to give (any sort of help) to their kins men....' (24.22) On that, Abu Bakr said, "Yes, by Allah, I like that Allah should forgive me." and then resumed giving Mistah the aid he used to give him and said, "By Allah! I will never withhold it from him."

Sa'id b. Musayyib, 'Urwa b. Zubair, 'Alqama b. Waqqas and 'Ubaidullah b. Abdullah b. 'Utba b. Mas'ud--all of them reported the story of the false allegation against 'A'isha, the wife of Allah's Apostle (s.a.w.a.). And they (the slanderers) said what they had to say, but Allah exonerated her of this charge and all of them ...

...Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, revealed:" 'Verily, those who spread the slander are a gang among you" (and) ten (subsequent) verses in regard to my innocence. She further said: Abu Bakr used to give to Mistah (some stipend) as a token of kinship with him and for his poverty and he (Abu Bakr) said: By Allah, now I would not spend anything for him. 'A'isha said: It was upon this that Allah the Exalted and Glorious revealed this verse:" And let not those who possess dignity and ease among you swear to give to the near of the kin" up to" Yearn ye not that Allah may forgive you?"...

Narrated Aisha, Ummul Mu'minin:

When my vindication came down, the Prophet (S) mounted the pulpit and mentioned that, and recited the Qur'an. Then when he came down from the pulpit he ordered regarding the two men and the woman, and they were given the prescribed punishment.

He (the Prophet) commanded regarding the two men and the woman who spoke obscenity were Hassan ibn Thabit and Mistah ibn Uthathah. An-Nufayl said: It is said that the woman was Hammah daughter of Jahsh.

2963 - As Ibrahim ibn Abi Dawud has narrated to us, saying: Ayyash ibn al-Walid al-Ruqam narrated to us, from Abd al-Ala ibn Abd al-Ala al-Sami, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq, who said: Abdullah ibn Abi Bakr narrated to me, from Umrah, the daughter of Abdur Rahman, from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), who said: When the Qur'an was revealed to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), he went out and sat on the pulpit and recited to the people what Allah had revealed: {Indeed, those who came with the falsehood are a group among you. Do not think it is bad for you; rather, it is good for you} (Surah An-Nur 24:11) to His statement: {a great punishment} (Surah An-Nur 24:11). Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) descended and commanded that two men and a woman be flogged with their prescribed punishment of eighty stripes each, and they were those who had taken upon themselves the greater part of that, and spoke of the indecency: Hissan, and Mistah, and Hamanah. Abu Ja'far said: There were also others among the scholars who adhered to this opinion beyond what we have mentioned, including Urwah ibn al-Zubair.

- .... It is said that the punishment for false accusation (qadhf) is a right of a human being that can only be enforced with their demand, even if it is said to be a right of Allah. However, the one accused must be consulted, and Aisha did not demand it from Ibn Ubayy. It is also said that his punishment was left for a greater benefit, just as his death was overlooked despite the manifestations of his hypocrisy and his utterances that warranted death on several occasions. This was to maintain the unity of his people and not to alienate them from Islam, for he was influential among them, a leader over them. Thus, the possibility of inciting unrest in enforcing his punishment could not be ruled out, and he may have been left for all these reasons. So, he punished: Mistah ibn Uthatha, and Hassan ibn Thabit, and Hamna bint Jahsh, and these were among the truthful believers, purifying them and expiating their sins, while Abd Allah ibn Ubayy was left alone. If so, he is not one of those who fall under that.

- .... Allah, the Almighty, said: {Indeed, those who came with the slander are a group among you} (An-Nur 24:11). All the commentators unanimously agreed that this verse and the ones related to it that follow were revealed concerning the story of Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) and the incident of the slander. They stated that these verses, up to ten in total, were revealed regarding Aisha's story. We have mentioned the hadith of the slander in the book Al-Hada'iq and in the book Al-Mughni fi al-Tafsir, but we did not elaborate on it because our aim is to condense this book for it to be memorized. As for the slander, it refers to falsehood, and a group means a small number of people. The meaning of His statement: {among you} (An-Nur 24:11) is, among the believers.
