The fourth accused: Ibn Abi Salool

Hadith No: 1

Narrated Ayesha.....

Urwa also added, "None was mentioned as members of the slanderous group besides (`Abdullah) except Hassan bin Thabit and Mistah bin Uthatha and Hamna bint Jahsh along with others about whom I have no knowledge, but they were a group as Allah said. It is said that the one who carried most of the slander was `Abdullah bin Ubai bin Salul.

25095 - Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us, who said: Ma'mar narrated to us, from al-Zuhri, who said: Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib, Urwah ibn al-Zubair, Alqamah ibn Waqas, and Ubaydullah ibn Abdullah ibn Utbah ibn Mas'ud informed me about the hadith of Aisha, the wife of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny).... Urwah also said, "Among those not named as part of the 'Ifk' (slander) were only: Hasan ibn Thabit, Msthah ibn Uthathah, and Humnah bint Jahsh, along with some others of whom I have no knowledge, except that they were a group, as Allah, the Exalted, said, and although it was significant, it was said to be occurring in the presence of Abdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul."

1905 - Abu Shu'aib Abdullah ibn al-Hasan al-Harani narrated to us, saying: Abdullah ibn Ja'far al-Ruqai narrated to us, saying: Abdullah, meaning Ibn Amr, narrated to us from Ishaq ibn Rashid, from al-Zuhri, from Urwah and Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib and Alqamah ibn Waqas and Ubaydullah ibn Abdullah, all of them from Aisha (ra) .... and it was a wrongdoing against her by one who accused her, namely Abdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul, and his companions among the hypocrites....

17131 - Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz and Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn al-Hasan al-Qadi both said: Abu al-Abbas Muhammad ibn Ya'qub narrated to us, saying: Ahmad ibn Abd al-Jabbar narrated to us, saying: Yunus ibn Bakir narrated to us, from Ibn Ishaq, who said: Abdullah ibn Abi Bakr ibn Amr ibn Hazm narrated to me, from Umra bint Abdur-Rahman ibn As'ad ibn Zararah, from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), that she said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) recited the story of my vindication that had been revealed to the people, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) then descended and ordered two men and a woman from among those who had committed fornication regarding Aisha to be flogged. He said that they were accusing her: Abdullah ibn Ubayy, Mistah ibn Uthatha, and Hasan ibn Thabit, and Hamna bint Jahsh, the sister of Zainab bint Jahsh, accused her with Safwan ibn al-Mu'attal al-Sulami. Muhammad ibn Abi 'Udd narrated it similarly from Muhammad ibn Ishaq.

Ibn Abi Hatim and al-Tabarani narrated from Sa'id ibn Jubayr: {Indeed, those who came with the slander (al-Nur 24:11)} meaning the {falsehood} were a group among you (al-Nur 24:11)} including Abdullah ibn Ubayy the hypocrite, and Hassan ibn Thabit, and Mistah ibn Uthathah, and Hamnah bint Jahsh ....

- .... Allah, the Almighty, said: {Indeed, those who came with the falsehood are a group among you (an-Nur 24:11)} All the interpreters (mufassirun) agreed that this verse and those related to it that follow were revealed concerning the story of Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) and the Hadith of the falsehood (ifk). They stated that this verse, along with ten others, were revealed in the incident involving Aisha. We have mentioned the Hadith of ifk in the books al-Hada'iq and al-Mughni fi al-Tafseer, but we did not elaborate on it because our aim is to shorten this book for it to be memorized. As for ifk, it means falsehood, and a group (usbah) refers to a collective. The meaning of His statement: {among you (an-Nur 24:11)} is, that they are from the believers.
1026 - Urwah narrated from Aisha that she said, "They are four": Hassan ibn Thabit, Abdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul, Mistaḥ ibn Uthathah, and Humnah bint Jahsh. Likewise, Muqatil counted them ....

1031 - Abu Salih narrated from Ibn Abbas that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) flogged: Abdullah ibn Ubayy, and Mstah ibn Uthathah, and Hassan ibn Thabit, and Hamnah bint Jahsh. As for the three, they repented, but Abdullah died a hypocrite. Some scholars dispute the validity of this and say he did not strike anyone....
