Revealed concerning Hafsa

Hadith No: 1

Narrated Ibn `Abbas:

I intended to ask `Umar about those two ladies who back each other against 'Allah's Messenger (s.a.w.a.) . For one year I was seeking the opportunity to ask this question, but in vain, until once when I accompanied him for Hajj. While we were in Zahran, `Umar went to answer the call of nature and told me to follow him with some water for ablution. So I followed him with a container of water and started pouring water for him. I found it a good opportunity to ask him, so I said, "O chief of the Believers! Who were those two ladies who had backed each other (against the Prophet)?" Before I could complete my question, he replied, "They were `Aisha and Hafsa."

Narrated Ibn `Abbas:

I had been eager to ask `Umar bin Al-Khattab about the two ladies from among the wives of the Prophet regarding whom Allah said 'If you two (wives of the Prophet (s.a.w.a.) namely Aisha and Hafsa) turn in repentance to Allah, your hearts are indeed so inclined (to oppose what the Prophet (s.a.w.a.) likes). (66.4) till `Umar performed the Hajj and I too, performed the Hajj along with him. (On the way) `Umar went aside to answer the call of nature, and I also went aside along with him carrying a tumbler full of water, and when `Umar had finished answering the call of nature, I poured water over his hands and he performed the ablution. Then I said to him, "O chief of the Believers! Who were the two ladies from among the wives of the Prophet (s.a.w.a.) regarding whom Allah said: 'If you two (wives of the Prophet) turn in repentance to Allah your hearts are indeed so inclined (to oppose what the Prophet (s.a.w.a.) likes)?" (66.4) He said, "I am astonished at your question, O Ibn `Abbas. They were `Aisha and Hafsa."

4668 - Narrated from Ibn Abbas, who said: "I said to Umar ibn al-Khattab, 'Who are the two women who opposed each other?' He replied, 'Aisha and Hafsa.'" The beginning of the narration was about Mary, the Coptic woman, the mother of Ibrahim, whom the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) had relations with in Hafsa's house on her day. Hafsa found out and said, 'O Prophet of Allah, you have come to me with something you have not come to any of your wives on my day, in my turn, and on my bed.' He said, 'Will you not be pleased if I make her unlawful to me and do not approach her?' She said, 'Yes,' so he made her unlawful and said, 'Do not mention this to anyone.' However, she told Aisha, and Allah made it known to her. Then Allah, the Exalted, revealed: {O Prophet, why do you prohibit what Allah has made lawful for you, seeking the approval of your wives?} (Surah at-Tahreem 66:1) and all the verses that followed. We were informed that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) expiated his oath and had relations with his maid.

4670 - .... Until it was the day of Hafsa, she said: O Messenger of Allah, I have a need with my father regarding some expenses he owes me, so please allow me to go to him. He granted her permission, then sent for Maria, his slave woman, and brought her into Hafsa's house, and he had relations with her. Hafsa said: I found the door closed, so I sat by the door. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) came out, scared, his face dripping with sweat, and Hafsa was crying. He said: What makes you cry? She replied: You only permitted me for this. You brought your slave woman into my house and then had relations with her on my bed. You would not have done this with one of the women! By Allah, it is not lawful for you, O Messenger of Allah. He said: By Allah, I did not deceive you. Is she not my slave woman, and has Allah not made her lawful for me? I bear witness to you that she is forbidden to me, seeking your approval. Do not tell any woman of them about this; it is a trust with you. When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) left, Hafsa knocked on the wall that separated her from Aisha and said: Shall I not give you good news that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) has forbidden himself from his slave woman, and Allah, the Exalted, has relieved us of her? Then Allah revealed: {O Prophet, why do you prohibit what Allah has made lawful for you, seeking the approval of your wives?} (Surah al-Tahreem 66:1) And then He said: {And if they conspire against you} (Surah al-Tahreem 66:4) It is Aisha and Hafsa; they were not hiding anything from each other....
