4668 - Narrated from Ibn Abbas who said: I asked Omar ibn al-Khattab, "Who are the two women who opposed each other?" He replied: "Aisha and Hafsa." And the beginning of the story was regarding Maria, the Coptic mother of Ibrahim. The Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) was with her in Hafsa's house on her day, and Hafsa found out. She said: "O Prophet of Allah, you have come to me with something you have not come to any of your wives on my day, in my turn, and on my bed." He said: "Would you not be pleased if I made her unlawful to me and did not go near her?" She replied: "Yes, so let her be unlawful." And he said: "Do not mention this to anyone," but she told Aisha. So Allah made it known to him, and Allah, the Exalted, revealed: {O Prophet, why do you prohibit what Allah has made lawful for you, seeking the approval of your wives?} (Surah at-Tahrim 66:1) – all the verses. And we learned that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) expiated his oath and became intimate with his maid.

4670 - Ibn Abbas said: .... until there came a day when Hafsa said: "O Messenger of Allah, I have a need with my father, a debt owed to me, so please allow me to go to him." He granted her permission, and then he sent for Maria, his slave girl, and brought her into Hafsa's house, and he had relations with her. Hafsa said: "I found the door closed, so I sat by the door, and then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) came out, looking frightened, his face dripping with sweat, and Hafsa was crying." He said: "What makes you cry?" She replied: "You only allowed me this for this reason, to introduce your handmaiden into my home, and then you had relations with her on my bed. You would not do this to one of the women among us. By Allah, it is not lawful for you, O Messenger of Allah." He said: "By Allah, I did not lie. Is she not my handmaiden? Allah has made her lawful for me. I bear witness to you that she is forbidden to me, as I seek your approval. Do not tell any of the women among us about this; it is a trust with you." When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) left, Hafsa tapped on the wall that separated her from Aisha and said: "Shall I not give you good news that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) has forbidden himself from his handmaid, and Allah, the Exalted, has relieved us of her?" Then Allah revealed: {O Prophet, why do you prohibit what Allah has made lawful for you, seeking the approval of your wives?} (Surah at-Tahrim 66:1) Then He said: {And if they both repent to Allah, it is best for them} (Surah at-Tahrim 66:4). So, they were Aisha and Hafsa; they were not concealing anything from each other...

4673 - Umar said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) secluded himself in the chamber of Shemr for a month when Hafsa revealed to Aisha what the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) had whispered to her, and he had said, "I will not enter upon you for a month, bearing a grudge against you." When twenty-nine days had passed, he entered upon Umm Salama and said, "The month is twenty-nine days," and that month was indeed twenty-nine days.
