Umar offers Hafsa to the companions for marriage

Hadith No: 1

Narrated `Abdullah bin `Umar:

`Umar bin Al-Khattab said, "When (my daughter) Hafsa bint `Umar lost her husband Khunais bin Hudhaifa As-Sahrni who was one of the companions of Allah's Messenger (s.a.w.a.) and had fought in the battle of Badr and had died in Medina, I met `Uthman bin `Affan and suggested that he should marry Hafsa saying, "If you wish, I will marry Hafsa bint `Umar to you,' on that, he said, 'I will think it over.' I waited for a few days and then he said to me. 'I am of the opinion that I shall not marry at present.' Then I met Abu Bakr and said, 'if you wish, I will marry you, Hafsa bint `Umar.' He kept quiet and did not give me any reply and I became more angry with him than I was with `Uthman . Some days later, Allah's Messenger (s.a.w.a.) demanded her hand in marriage and I married her to him. Later on Abu Bakr met me and said, "Perhaps you were angry with me when you offered me Hafsa for marriage and I gave no reply to you?' I said, 'Yes.' Abu Bakr said, 'Nothing prevented me from accepting your offer except that I learnt that Allah's Messenger (s.a.w.a.) had referred to the issue of Hafsa and I did not want to disclose the secret of Allah's Messenger (s.a.w.a.) , but had he (i.e. the Prophet) given her up I would surely have accepted her."

4792 - Yazid ibn Harun narrated to us, saying: Sufyan, meaning Ibn Husayn, narrated to us, from al-Zuhri, from Salim, from Ibn Umar, who said: "When Hafsa became widowed, she was married to Khunays ibn Hudhafah. Umar (ra) met Uthman (ra) and offered her to him. Uthman said, 'I have no need for women, but I will think about it.' Then he met Abu Bakr (ra) and offered her to him, and he remained silent. Umar (ra) felt something in himself towards Abu Bakr. Then he saw that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) had proposed to her." So Umar (ra) met Abu Bakr (ra) and said: "I had offered her to Uthman, and he rejected me, and I offered her to you, and you were silent towards me. It seems you were more displeased than me with Uthman (ra), yet he rejected me." Abu Bakr said: "He had mentioned something about her, and it was a secret, so I disliked to disclose the secret."

Hadith No: 4

It was narrated that 'Umar said:

"Hafsah bint 'Umar became single when (her husband) Khunais -meaning bin Hudhafah- (died). He was one of the Companions of the Prophet who had been present at Badr, and he died in Al-Madinah. I met 'Uthman bin 'Affan and offered Hafsah in marriage to him. I said: 'If you wish, I will marry you to Hafsah.' He said: 'I will think about it.' A few days passed, then I met him and he said: 'I do not want to get married at the moment.'" 'Umar said: "Then I met Abu Bakr As-Siddiq, and said: 'If you wish, I will marry Hafsah to you.' He did not give me any answer, and I felt more upset with him than I had with 'Uthman. Several days passed, then the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) proposed marriage to her, and I married her to him. Abu Bakr met me and said: 'Perhaps you felt upset with me when you offered Hafsah in marriage to me and I did not give you an answer?' I said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Nothing prevented me from giving you an answer when you made the offer to me except the fact that I had heard the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) speak of her, and I did not want to disclose the secret of the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.); if he had left her, then I would have married her.'"
