5646 - Muhammad ibn Dhafar al-Hafiz narrated to me, and I asked him, who said: Al-Husayn ibn Ayash al-Qattan narrated to me, from Al-Husayn, from Yahya ibn Ayash al-Qattan, from Al-Husayn ibn Yahya al-Marrozi, from Ghalib ibn Hulayis al-Kalbi, Abu al-Haytham, from Juwayriyah ibn Asma' , from Yahya ibn Sa'id, who said: My uncle said that when the day of the Camel occurred, Ali called out to the people: "Do not throw a single arrow, do not stab with a spear, do not strike with a sword, and do not pursue the people, for this is a position in which one who succeeds will thrive on the Day of Resurrection." He said that we all agreed, then the people said in unison: "O avengers of Uthman!" He said that Ibn al-Hanafiyyah was our leader on a hilltop with the banner. Ali called out to him, and he turned to us, covering his face, and said: "O Commander of the Faithful, they say: 'O avengers of Uthman.'" Then Ali stretched out his hands and said: "O Allah, today cast the killers of Uthman down on their faces!" Then Al-Zubayr said to the assailants who were with him: "Throw them a volley," and it seemed he wanted to initiate fighting. But when his companions saw him preparing to fight, they did not wait and charged, and Allah defeated them.
Marwan ibn al-Hakam threw an arrow at Talha ibn Ubayd Allah, striking his leg and embedding it in the side of his horse. The horse reared, and he was thrown off, and he killed him. Marwan then looked at Aban ibn Uthman, who was with him, and said: "I have spared you one of your father's killers."
