Muawiyah insults and orders to insult Ali

Hadith No: 1

Amir b. Sa'd b. Abi Waqqas reported on the authority of his father that Muawiya b. Abi Sufyan appointed Sa'd as the Governor and said:

What prevents you from abusing Abu Turab (Hadrat 'Ali (s)), whereupon be said: It is because of three things which I remember Allah's Messenger (s.a.w.a.) having said about him that I would not abuse him and even if I find one of those three things for me, it would be more dear to me than the red camels. I heard Allah's Messenger (s.a.w.a.) say about 'Ali (as) as he left him behind in one of his campaigns (that was Tabuk). 'Ali (as) said to him: Allah's Messenger (s.a.w.a.), you leave me behind along with women and children. Thereupon Allah's Messenger (s.a.w.a.) said to him: Aren't you satisfied with being unto me what Aaron was unto Moses but with this exception that there is no prophethood after me. And I (also) heard him say on the Day of Khaibar: I would certainly give this standard to a person who loves Allah and his Messenger, and Allah and his Messenger love him too. He (the narrator) said: We had been anxiously waiting for it, when he (the Holy Prophet) said: Call 'Ali (as). He was called and his eyes were inflamed. He applied saliva to his eyes and handed over the standard to him, and Allah gave him victory. (The third occasion is this) when the (following) verse was revealed: "Let us summon our children and your children." Allah's Messenger (s.a.w.a.) called 'Ali (as), Fatima (sa), Hasan (as) and Husain (as) and said: O Allah, they are my family.

Narrated 'Amir bin Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas:

from his father, saying "Mu'awiyah bin Abu Sufyan ordered Sa'd, saying 'What prevented you from reviling Abu Turab?' He said: 'Three things that I remember from the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) prevent me from reviling him. That I should have even one those things is more beloved to me than red camels. I heard the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) speaking to 'Ali, and he had left him behind in one of his battles. So 'Ali said to him: "O Messenger of Allah! You leave me behind with women and children?" So the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) said to him: "Are you not pleased that you should be in the position with me that Harun was with Musa? Except that there is no Prophethood after me?" And on the Day of (the battle of) Khaibar, I heard him saying: "I shall give the banner to a man who loves Allah and His Messenger, and Allah and His Messenger love him." So we all waited for that, then he said: "Call 'Ali for me." He said: 'So he came to him, and he had been suffering from Ramad (an eye condition), so he (s) put spittle in his eye and gave the banner to him, then Allah granted him victory. And when this Ayah was revealed: 'Let us call our sons and your sons, our women and your women...' (3:61) the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) called 'Ali, Fatimah, Hasan, and Husain and said: "O Allah, these are my family."

It was narrated that Sa`d bin Waqqas said:

"Mu`awiyah came on one of his pilgrimages and Sa`d entered upon him. They mentioned `Ali, and Mu`awiyah criticized him. Sa`d became angry and said: 'Are you saying this of a man of whom I heard the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) say: "If I am a person's close friend, `Ali is also his close friend." And I heard him say: "You are to me like Harun was to Musa, except that there will be no Prophet after me." And I heard him say: "I will give the banner today to a man who loves Allah and His Messenger."

4632 - Abu al-Abbas Muhammad ibn Ya'qub narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Sinan al-Qazzaz narrated to us, saying: Ubaydullah ibn Abdul Majid al-Hanifi and Ahmad ibn Ja'far al-Qat'i both informed me, saying: Abdullah ibn Ahmad ibn Hanbal narrated to me, from my father, who said: Abu Bakr al-Hanifi narrated to us, saying: Bakir ibn Musmar narrated, who said: I heard Muawiya addressing Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas (ra): "What prevents you from cursing the son of Abi Talib?" Sa'd replied: "I do not curse him because you mentioned three things that Rasulullah (s) said to him. For me to have one of them is dearer than red camels." Muawiya then asked him, "What are they, Abu Ishaq?" Sa'd said: "I do not curse him because you mentioned when the revelation descended upon him, and he took Ali and his two sons and Fatima, and brought them under his robe, then said, 'O Lord, these are my family.'" And I do not curse him because you mentioned when he left him during the Battle of Tabuk, which Rasulullah (s) was undertaking. Ali said to him, 'You have left me with the children and the women.' He replied, 'Are you not pleased to be in relation to me as Harun was to Musa, except that there is no prophet after me?'" And I do not curse him because you mentioned on the day of Khaybar, when Rasulullah (s) said, "I will surely give this banner to a man who loves Allah and His Messenger, and Allah will open (the victory) through his hands." We then stretched out (our hands) to Rasulullah (s), and he said, "Where is Ali?" They said, "He has sore eyes." He said, "Call him." So they called him, and he spat in his face, then gave him the banner, and Allah opened (the victory) through him." Sa'd concluded, "By Allah, Muawiya did not mention him again until he left the city." This is a hadith authentic on the conditions of the two Shaykhs, but they did not narrate it in this wording. Both agreed to narrate the hadith of brotherhood and the hadith of the banner.

- .... As for the hadith of Sa'd, when Mu'awiyah commanded him to curse and he refused, he said: "What prevented you from cursing Ali ibn Abi Talib?" He replied: "Three things the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said, so I will not curse him. For having even one of them would be more beloved to me than red camels." This is a genuine hadith, which Muslim narrated in his Sahih.

- .... Imam Ahmad said: Ali ibn Asim narrated to us, saying that Husayn said: Ali narrated to me from Hilal ibn Yasaf from Abdullah ibn Zaloom al-Mazani, who said: When Muawiya left Kufa, he appointed al-Mughira ibn Shu'ba as governor. He began to have preachers speak ill of Ali. I was sitting next to Sa'id ibn Zayd ibn Umar ibn Nufayl. Sa'id became angry, stood up, and took my hand, and I followed him. He said: "Do you not see this man, unjust to himself, who orders the cursing of a man from the people of Kufa? I bear witness that the nine are from the people of Paradise, and if I were to bear witness of the tenth, I would not be sinning." I said, "What is that?" He replied: "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said, 'Stay firm, O Harra! You have upon you only a Prophet, a Siddiq, or a Shahid.'" I said, "Who are they?" He said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, Ali, al-Zubayr, Talha, Abdullah ibn Awf, and Sa'd ibn Malik." I asked, "And who is the tenth?" He replied: "He said, 'I am.'" And it is appropriate to write here the earlier hadith of Umm Salama, mentioning that she said to Abu Abdullah al-Jadli: "Is the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) insulted among you on the pulpits?" Ahmad narrated this.
