- Abu al-Hasan al-Mada'ini narrated: After Mu'awiya's entry into Kufa and his reconciliation with al-Hasan (peace be upon him), some of the Kharijites came out against him. Mu'awiya sent to al-Hasan (peace be upon him) asking him to go out and fight the Kharijites. Al-Hasan replied: "Glory be to Allah! You left fighting them, which is permissible for me, for the sake of the community's welfare, and I have reconciled them. Do you expect me to fight alongside you?" Then Mu'awiya addressed the people of Kufa and said: "O people of Kufa, do you think I would fight you over prayer, almsgiving, and pilgrimage, while I know that you pray, give alms, and perform pilgrimage? Rather, I fought you to assume authority over you and over your necks, and God has granted me that while you are unwilling." He continued, "However, all wealth or blood lost in this turmoil will be subject to requital, and every condition I have set will be enforced under these two feet of mine. The only way to set things right among the people is through three actions: distributing allowances at their proper times, closing the troops for their designated periods, and waging war on the enemy in their homelands. For if you do not confront them, they will confront you." Then he descended.
