Mua'wiyah ordered people to eat money wrongly and commit suicide

Hadith No: 1

It has been narrated on the authority of 'Abd al-Rahman b. Abd Rabb al-Ka'ba who said:

I entered the mosque when 'Abdullah b. 'Amr b. al-'As was sitting in the shade of the Ka'ba and the people had gathered around him. I betook myself to them and sat near him. (Now) Abdullah said: I accompanied the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) on a journey. We halted at a place. Some of us began to set right their tents, others began to compete with one another in shooting, and others began to graze their beasts, when an announcer of the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) announced that the people should gather together for prayer, so we gathered around the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.). He said: It was the duty of every Prophet that has gone before me to guide his followers to what he knew was good for them and warn them against what he knew was bad for them; but this Umma of yours has its days of peace and (security) in the beginning of its career, and in the last phase of its existence it will be afflicted with trials and with things disagreeable to you. (In this phase of the Umma), there will be tremendous trials one after the other, each making the previous one dwindle into insignificance. When they would be afflicted with a trial, the believer would say: This is going to bring about my destruction. When at (the trial) is over, they would be afflicted with another trial, and the believer would say: This surely is going to be my end. Whoever wishes to be delivered from the fire and enter the garden should die with faith in Allah and the Last Day and should treat the people as he wishes to be treated by them. He who swears allegiance to a Caliph should give him the piedge of his hand and the sincerity of his heart (i. e. submit to him both outwardly as well as inwardly). He should obey him to the best of his capacity. It another man comes forward (as a claimant to Caliphate), disputing his authority, they (the Muslims) should behead the latter. The narrator says: I came close to him ('Abdullah b. 'Amr b. al-'As) and said to him: Can you say on oath that you heard it from the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.)? He pointed with his hands to his ears and his heart and said: My ears heard it and my mind retained it. I said to him: This cousin of yours, Mu'awiya, orders us to unjustly consume our wealth among ourselves and to kill one another, while Allah says:" O ye who believe, do not consume your wealth among yourselves unjustly, unless it be trade based on mutual agreement, and do not kill yourselves. Verily, God is Merciful to you" (iv. 29). The narrator says that (hearing this) Abdullah b. 'Amr b. al-As kept quiet for a while and then said: Obey him in so far as he is obedient to God; and diqobey him in matters involving disobedience to God.

6467 - Abu Muawiya narrated to us, from al-A'mash, from Zayd ibn Wahb, from Abd al-Rahman ibn Abd Rabb al-Ka'bah, who said: I approached Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As while he was sitting in the shade of the Ka'bah, and I heard him say .... So I said, "This is your cousin Muawiya," meaning that he is commanding us to consume each other's wealth unjustly and to kill ourselves, whereas Allah, the Exalted, has said: {O you who have believed, do not consume one another's wealth unjustly or throw it into one another's faces, except for trade by mutual consent. And do not kill yourselves, for indeed Allah is ever Merciful to you} (Surah An-Nisa 4:29). He then brought his hands together and placed them on his forehead, and then lowered his head. Then he raised his head and said: "Obey him in obedience to Allah, and disobey him in disobedience to Allah, the Mighty and Exalted."

- .... Abd al-Rahman said: When I heard this, I inserted my head between the people and said: "I beseech you by Allah, did you hear this from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny)?" He then gestured with his hand to his ears and said: "My ears heard it, and my heart grasped it." He continued: So I said: "This is your cousin" - meaning Muawiya - "commanding us to consume our wealth unjustly among ourselves and to kill ourselves, when Allah, the Exalted, has said: {O you who have believed, do not consume one another's wealth unjustly or send it [in bribery] to the rulers in order that [they might aid] you to consume a portion of the wealth of the people in sin, while you know [it is unlawful].} (Quran 4:29) He then brought his hands together and placed them on his forehead, then lowered his head for a moment, and then raised it, saying: "Obey him in what is obedience to Allah, and disobey him in what is disobedience to Allah." And Ahmad narrated it.

5961 - Abu Khalifah reported to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Kathir narrated to us, saying: Sufyan narrated to us, from al-A'mash, from Zayd ibn Wahb, from Abdul Rahman ibn Abd Rabb al-Kabah, who said: I heard Abdullah ibn Amr narrating in the shade of the Ka'bah, saying: We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) on a journey, and among us were some who were brandishing spears, some who were in their harnesses, and some who were repairing their tents, when we heard a call for a congregational prayer. We gathered, and then we saw the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) delivering a sermon, saying: "There was no prophet before me except that it was incumbent upon Allah to guide his nation to what is better for them and warn them of what He knows to be worse for them. Indeed, this nation has been granted well-being in its early days, and trials will afflict its later days. A trial will come to the believer, and he will say: 'This is my doom,' then another will come and he will say: 'This is my doom,' then it will become clear. So, whoever among you desires to be drawn away from the Fire and enter Paradise should meet his end while believing in Allah and the Last Day, and let him approach people in a manner he would like to be approached." And whoever vows allegiance to an imam and gives him the grip of his hand and the fruit of his heart, let him obey him as much as he can." I said, "This is your cousin Muawiyah, commanding us to consume each other's wealth unjustly and shed our blood," and Allah said: {O you who have believed, do not consume one another's wealth unjustly or send it [in bribery] to the rulers} (Surah an-Nisa, 4:29) And He said: {And do not kill yourselves} (Surah an-Nisa, 4:29). He then fell silent for a moment and said: "Obey him in what is obedience to Allah, and disobey him in what is disobedience to Allah."
