- .... Among these is what al-Haythami narrated (9/356-357) and it was also mentioned in Fada'il al-Sahabah (2/913-915) from al-Arba'd ibn Sariyyah and others: that the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said, "O Allah, teach Mu'awiyah the Book and the Account, and protect him from Punishment." The hadith has come through several weak or disconnected chains, but some of these strengthen one another.

15917 - And from al-Arba'd ibn Sa'riah, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said, "O Allah, teach Muawiya the Book and the Account, and protect him from torment." Narrated by al-Bazzar and Ahmad in a lengthy hadith, and al-Tabarani also narrated it, and in it is al-Harith ibn Ziyad, of whom I did not find anyone who certified him, and none narrated from him except Yunus ibn Sayf. The rest of his companions are trustworthy, although there is some disagreement regarding some of them.

15918 - And from Muslima ibn Makhlad: that the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said to Muawiya: "O Allah, teach him the Book and the Account, and grant him power in the lands." And in another narration: "And protect him from the evils of punishment." Al-Tabarani narrated it via the route of Jubala ibn Atiyya from Muslima ibn Makhlad, and Jubala did not hear from Muslima, so it is considered interrupted (mursal), but its narrators were trustworthy (thuqaat), and there is some disagreement among them.

387 - Jabla ibn Atiyya from Muslama ibn Makhlad: Unknown, and the narration is decidedly weak when reported alone. And it is from the route of Nasir from Abu Hilal Muhammad ibn Sulam, who narrated to us: Jabla from a man from Muslama ibn Makhlad: that the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said, "O Allah, teach Muawiya the Book and grant him authority in the lands." Perhaps the flaw in the hadith lies with the unknown man....

- .... And Muawiya ibn Salih said from Yunus ibn Seyf, from al-Harith ibn Ziyad, from Abu Rahm al-Samma'i, from al-'Arabad ibn Surya: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) calling us to sahur: "Come to the blessed meal." Then I heard him say: "O Allah, teach Muawiya the Book and the Account, and protect him from punishment." Ahmad narrated this in his Musnad, and Qutayba erred in it, omitting Abu Rahm and al-'Arabad.
- .... And it was said that Abu Mishar said: Sa'id ibn Abdul Aziz narrated to us from Rabi'a ibn Yazid, from Abdul Rahman ibn Abi Umayra al-Mazini, who was one of the companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), that the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said to Muawiya: "O Allah, teach him the Book and the Account, and protect him from punishment." The narrators of this hadith are trustworthy, but they differed regarding Abdul Rahman's companionship, and it is more likely that he was a companion.
