- Abu Ali al-Hasan ibn al-Muẓaffar ibn al-Hasan ibn al-Sabt narrated to us, saying: Abu Muhammad al-Jawhari narrated to us, saying: Abu Bakr al-Qaṭi'i narrated to us, from Abdullah ibn Ahmad ibn Hanbal, who said: My father narrated to me, from Muhammad ibn Abi Adi, from Dawud, from Amir, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent forth the army of Dhāt al-Salā'il and appointed Abu Ubayda over the Emigrants (Muhajirin) and Umar ibn al-As over the Bedouins (Arab). He instructed them to cooperate with each other. So, they were commanded to raid on Bakr, and Umar went and raided Qudā'a, for Bakr was his maternal uncle. Then al-Mughira ibn Shu'ba went to Abu Ubayda and said: "Indeed, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) has appointed you over us, and the son of so-and-so has taken control of the matter of the people, and you have no authority with him."
Abu Ubayda replied: "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) commanded us to cooperate, so I will obey the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), even if Umar acts contrary to him."
