4192 - Dharar ibn al-Azwar, and his name al-Azwar was Malik ibn Aws ibn J uzaymah ibn Rabiah ibn Malik ibn Thalabah ibn Dudan ibn Asad ibn Khuzaymah al-Asadi, Abu al-Azwar, and he is also called Abu Bilal. Al-Bukhari, Abu Hatim, and Ibn Hibban said he had companionship (with the Prophet). Al-Baghawi said he settled in Kufa .... There is disagreement about the time of his death. Al-Waqidi said he was martyred at al-Yamama, and Musa ibn Uqbah said at Ajnadayn. Abu Na'im confirmed this. Abu Urooba al-Harani said he settled in Harran and died there, and it is said that he witnessed the Battle of Yarmouk and the conquest of Damascus, and that he died in Damascus .... Ya'qub ibn Suwayyan narrated it at length from this perspective, saying: Khalid sent Dharar in a raiding party, and they attacked a clan of Banu Asad and took a beautiful woman. Dharar asked his companions to grant her to him, and they did, so he consummated with her but then regretted it. He mentioned this to Khalid, who said, 'I have already made her permissible for you.' Dharar replied, 'Not until you write to Umar.' So Khalid wrote, 'I have already made her permissible for you.' Then the letter came, and she had died. Khalid said, "What was Allah to humiliate Dharar?" It is said that he was the one who killed Malik ibn Nuwayra by the order of Khalid ibn al-Walid, and that he was among those who drank alcohol with Abu Jundab. Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah wrote to Umar about them, and Umar wrote back, "Call them and question them. If they say it is lawful, kill them. If they claim it is unlawful, flog them." So he did, and they said it was unlawful. Al-Bukhari said in his History, following Musa ibn Uqbah's statement: "Indeed, Dharar ibn al-Azwar was martyred during the caliphate of Abu Bakr," but this is a mistake; it is actually Dharar ibn al-Khattab.

486 - Darar ibn al-Azwar al-Asadi, the famous Companion, and al-Azwar's real name was Malik ibn Aws ibn Judhaymah ibn Rabi'ah ibn Malik ibn Thalabah ibn Dudan ibn Asad ibn Khuzaymah. Ibn Abi Hatim said: Darar ibn al-Azwar ibn Mirdas ibn Habib ibn Umayr ibn Kathir ibn Amr ibn Sinan had companionship with the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny). He narrated from the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), and Abdullah ibn Sinan, Abu Wa'il, Shaqiq ibn Salamah, and Ya'qub ibn Bajir narrated from him. He was known to have the kunyah Abu al-Azwar and it is said Abu Bilal. Others said he was one of the heroic poets who visited the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and was sent by him to the Banu al-Riyan, and then he witnessed the battle against Musaylimah, showing great valor that day. He was martyred on the day of Ajnadin during the caliphate of Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him). I say: There is disagreement about the time of his death. Al-Waqidi said he was martyred at Yamamah, while Abu 'Arabah al-Harrani said he settled in Harran and died there. Al-Bukhari narrated in his History from the report of Harun ibn al-Asamm: A letter from Umar came regarding what Darar did, but Darar had died. Then Khalid ibn al-Walid said: "Allah would not disgrace Darar." And the details of this story were elaborated by Ya'qub ibn Sufyan in his History with his own chain: Khalid sent Darar on a raid, and they attacked a tribe and captured a beautiful woman. Darar asked his companions to let him have her, and they agreed. He consorted with her but then regretted it and went to Khalid, who said to him: "I have made her agreeable for you." Darar replied: "Not until you write to Umar." A letter from Umar came commanding him to stone her, but Darar died before the letter arrived, and it is said he was the one who killed Malik ibn Nuwaira by Khalid's order.

- Explanation: Al-Bayhaqi narrated in his Sunan al-Kubra something that contradicts what the author mentioned, as he said: Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) sent Khalid ibn al-Walid in an army, and Khalid sent Darar ibn al-Azwar on a raid with cavalry, and they made a surprise attack on a tribe of Banu Asad. They captured a beautiful bride, and Darar was taken with her. His companions asked her, and they gave her to him, so he consummated the marriage with her. However, when he returned, he regretted it and felt it heavy on him. When he reported this to Khalid, Khalid told him what he had done. Khalid said, "I have already granted it to you and made her lawful for you." He replied, "No, until you write to Umar about it." Umar wrote that he should be punished with stones. Then Umar's (may Allah be pleased with him) letter arrived, and he had passed away. Khalid said, "It was not appropriate for Allah to humiliate Darar ibn al-Azwar."

18222 - Abu al-Husayn ibn al-Fadl al-Qattan narrated to us, saying: Abdullah ibn Ja'far ibn Darustuwaih narrated to me, saying: Yaqoub ibn Sufyan narrated to us, saying: al-Hasan ibn al-Rabi narrated to me, and Abu Nasr ibn Qutadah narrated to us, saying: Abu al-Fadl ibn Khamirwayh narrated to me, saying: Ahmad ibn Najdah narrated to us, saying: al-Hasan ibn al-Rabi narrated to us, saying: Abdullah ibn al-Mubarak narrated to us, from Kuhmis, from Harun ibn al-Asamm, who said: Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) sent Khalid ibn al-Walid in an army, and Khalid sent Durar ibn al-Azwar in a detachment of cavalry. They raided a tribe of Banu Asad and captured a beautiful bride who caught Durar's eye. His companions asked her, and they gave her to him, so he consummated the marriage with her. However, when he returned, he felt regret and it weighed heavily on him. When he was brought before Khalid, he informed him of what he had done. Khalid said, "I have already granted my approval and made her lawful for you." He replied, "Not until you write about this to Umar." Umar wrote that he should be 'stoned to death.' Then, Umar's (may Allah be pleased with him) letter arrived, but he had passed away. Khalid said, "God would not allow Durar ibn al-Azwar to be humiliated."
