Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani - Al-Isabah fi Tamyiz al-Sahabah - Chapter on the letter Dad with a dot
Part One - Dad followed by Ra - 4192: Dharar ibn al-Azwar
Volume: (3) - Page Number: (390 > 392)
4192 - Dharar ibn al-Azwar, and his name al-Azwar was Malik ibn Aws ibn J uzaymah ibn Rabiah ibn Malik ibn Thalabah ibn Dudan ibn Asad ibn Khuzaymah al-Asadi, Abu al-Azwar, and he is also called Abu Bilal. Al-Bukhari, Abu Hatim, and Ibn Hibban said he had companionship (with the Prophet). Al-Baghawi said he settled in Kufa .... There is disagreement about the time of his death. Al-Waqidi said he was martyred at al-Yamama, and Musa ibn Uqbah said at Ajnadayn. Abu Na'im confirmed this. Abu Urooba al-Harani said he settled in Harran and died there, and it is said that he witnessed the Battle of Yarmouk and the conquest of Damascus, and that he died in Damascus .... Ya'qub ibn Suwayyan narrated it at length from this perspective, saying:
Khalid sent Dharar in a raiding party, and they attacked a clan of Banu Asad and took a beautiful woman. Dharar asked his companions to grant her to him, and they did, so he consummated with her but then regretted it. He mentioned this to Khalid, who said, 'I have already made her permissible for you.' Dharar replied, 'Not until you write to Umar.' So Khalid wrote, 'I have already made her permissible for you.' Then the letter came, and she had died. Khalid said, "What was Allah to humiliate Dharar?"
It is said that he was the one who killed Malik ibn Nuwayra by the order of Khalid ibn al-Walid, and that he was among those who drank alcohol with Abu Jundab. Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah wrote to Umar about them, and Umar wrote back, "Call them and question them. If they say it is lawful, kill them. If they claim it is unlawful, flog them." So he did, and they said it was unlawful. Al-Bukhari said in his History, following Musa ibn Uqbah's statement: "Indeed, Dharar ibn al-Azwar was martyred during the caliphate of Abu Bakr," but this is a mistake; it is actually Dharar ibn al-Khattab.
