3380 - Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Muzakki narrated to me in Marv, saying: Abdullah ibn Ruh al-Madaini narrated to us, saying: Yazid ibn Harun narrated to us, mentioning that Hisham ibn Hassan informed him, from Muhammad ibn Sirin from Abu Huraira, who said: Umar said to me, "O enemy of Allah and enemy of Islam, you have betrayed the wealth of Allah." I replied, "I am neither an enemy of Allah nor an enemy of Islam, but I am an enemy of whoever opposes them, and I did not betray the wealth of Allah." Rather, it was the prices of goods that I exhausted and arrows that had gathered." Umar then repeated this to me and reaffirmed this statement. He fined me twelve thousand. Then I stood in the morning prayer and said, "O Allah, forgive the Commander of the Faithful." When that was over, he wanted me to take up a position, but I refused. He said, "Why not? Yusuf asked for a position and he was better than you." I replied, "Indeed, Yusuf was a prophet, the son of a prophet, the grandson of a prophet, the great-grandson of a prophet, while I am the son of Umayma, and I fear three things and two." He said, "You do not mean to say five?" I replied, "No." He asked, "What are they?" I said, "I fear that I might speak without knowledge, that I might issue a legal opinion without knowledge, that my back may be beaten, that my honor may be insulted, and that my wealth may be taken by force." This is a hadith with a chain of narration that is sound, meeting the criteria of the two shaykhs, although they did not include it in their collections.

- He said: Amr ibn al-Haytham narrated to us, who said: Abu Hilal narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Sirin from Abu Huraira, who said: "I was a governor in Bahrain and came to Umar ibn al-Khattab. He said: 'Count for God and for Islam,' or he said, 'Count for God and for His Book,' that I had stolen from the property of God." I said, "No, but I am a foe of those who oppose them. Horses of mine seemed to have bred, and arrows of mine appeared to have gathered, and twelve thousand were taken from me." He said: Then he sent for me after that and said, "Will you not work?" I replied, "No." He said, "Why? Hasn't Joseph worked?" I said, "Joseph was a prophet, the son of a prophet, so I fear doing what you do for three or two reasons." He said, "Shouldn't you say five?" I replied, "I fear that they will insult my honor, take my wealth, and beat my back, and I am afraid that I will speak without wisdom and judge without knowledge."

20659 - Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us, from Mamar, from Ayub, from Ibn Sirin, that Umar ibn al-Khattab appointed Abu Huraira over Bahrain, and he came with ten thousand. Umar said to him, "You have hoarded this money, O enemy of Allah and enemy of His Book." Abu Huraira replied, "I am neither an enemy of Allah nor an enemy of His Book, but I am an enemy of those who oppose them." Umar asked, "Then where did it come from?" He said, "Horses of mine have given birth to foals, and the produce of my slaves, and gifts that have been given to me in succession." They examined it and found it as he said. Later on, when Umar called him to appoint him again, he refused to work for him. Umar said, "Do you dislike working, while those who are better than you have sought work?" Abu Huraira replied, "Who asked for work was Joseph." Umar said, "Joseph was a prophet, son of a prophet, son of a prophet, and I am Abu Huraira, son of Ummayma. I fear three things and two." Umar said to him, "Would you not say five?" He replied, "I fear saying something without knowledge, giving a ruling without justice, being beaten on my back, having my wealth taken, and my honor insulted."

- Abu al-Qasim ibn al-Samarqandi narrated to us, saying: Abu Ali ibn al-Musallam narrated to us, saying: Abu al-Hasan ibn al-Hammami narrated to us, saying: Abu Ali ibn al-Suwwaf narrated to us, saying: Hasan ibn Ali al-Qattan narrated to us, from Ismail ibn Isa, saying: Abu Hudhayfa Ishaq ibn Bishr ibn Ghayath narrated to us, from Hisham ibn Hasan, from Muhammad ibn Sirin from Abu Huraira, who said: "When I arrived from Bahrain, Umar said: 'O enemy of Allah and enemy of Islam, you have betrayed the wealth of Allah.' I replied: 'I am neither an enemy of Allah nor an enemy of Islam, but I am an enemy of one who opposes them both.' And I did not betray the wealth of Allah; rather, these are the prices of horses that my own bred with each other in my possession, and arrows that have gathered for me." Umar repeated this three times, and each time I tried to respond, but he imposed upon me a fine of twelve thousand dirhams. Then I stood in the Fajr prayer and said: "O Allah, forgive the Amir of the Faithful." He wanted me to work for him after that, but I said: "I will not work for you." He replied: "Was not Yusuf better than you, and did he not ask for work?" I said: "Yusuf was a prophet and the son of a prophet, while I am the son of Ummaymah. I fear three things and two." He said: "Do not say five." I replied: "I fear not being able to speak without Your judgment, to judge without knowledge, that my back will be struck, my honor insulted, and my wealth taken."

- .... And Muhammad ibn Sirin narrated from Abu Huraira, who said: "Umar ibn al-Khattab appointed me over al-Bahrain, and I gathered twelve thousand dirhams. When I returned to Umar, he said to me: 'O enemy of Allah and the Muslims,' or he said, 'enemy of His Book, you have stolen the wealth of Allah.'" He replied, "I am not an enemy of Allah or the Muslims," or he said, "an enemy of His Book, but I am an enemy of one who opposes them." Umar asked, "Where did you get this money?" He answered, "I had horses that gave birth and arrows that came together." Umar then took twelve thousand dirhams from him, and when I prayed the dawn prayer, I said: 'O Allah, forgive Umar.'" He said that Umar would take from them and give them even more than that, until later he said, "Are you not going to work, O Abu Huraira?" He replied, "No." Umar asked, "Why not? There are those who are better than you working, like Joseph." He said, "Make me a steward of the treasures of the earth; I am indeed careful and knowledgeable." He replied, "Joseph was a prophet, son of a prophet, and I am Abu Huraira, son of Umayma. I fear three things from you and two." Umar said, "Why did you not say five?" He answered, "I fear that you will strike my back, insult my honor, take my money, and I dislike speaking without knowledge and judging without wisdom...."

- .... And when Abu Huraira returned from Bahrain, Umar said to him: "O enemy of Allah and enemy of His Book, have you stolen the wealth of Allah, the Almighty?" Abu Huraira replied: "I am not an enemy of Allah or an enemy of His Book, but I am an enemy of those who oppose them, and I did not steal the wealth of Allah." So Umar struck him on the head with a palm frond, then followed it with a blow from a rod, and fined him ten thousand dirhams. Then he summoned him and said: "O Abu Huraira, where did you get ten thousand dirhams?" He said: "My horse has given birth to foals, my allowance has been increasing, and my shares have been multiplying." Umar said: "No, by Allah." Then he left him for several days and said to him: "Will you not work?" He replied: "No." Umar said: "There are those who are better than you working, O Abu Huraira." He asked: "Who is that?" Umar replied: "Joseph the Trustworthy." Abu Huraira said: "Indeed, Joseph worked for someone who did not strike his head and back, insult his honor, or take away his wealth. No, by Allah, I will never work for you."
