- .... He had been asked about Yazid ibn Muawiya, and he criticized him and made extravagant statements. He said: "If I were to extend with white, I would extend the reins in the disgraceful acts of this man." Then he continued: "As for the words of the predecessors, Ahmad, Malik, and Abu Hanifa have two opinions on him: hints and explicit statements, while we have one opinion that is explicit." - .... Yazid is from the companions [of the Prophet], born in the time of Umar ibn al-Khattab, and he committed the well-known grave wrongs. Then he said: "As for the words of the predecessors, Ahmad has two opinions on him: hints and explicit statements, and Malik also has two opinions: explicit and implicit. We have one opinion that is explicit without hints." He added: "And how could it be otherwise, when he is one who plays with dice, hunts with a leopard, neglects prayers, is addicted to wine, kills the family of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), and openly declares in his poetry clear disbelief?"
