- .... And after their consensus on his wrongdoing, they differed on the permissibility of condemning him by specifically naming him, but some, including Ibn al-Jawzi, deemed it permissible.
- .... Al-Waqidi narrated through various chains that Abdullah ibn Hanzalah is the one washed by the angels, who said, "By Allah, we did not rise against Yazid until we feared we would be struck with stones from heaven, and we feared that a man would engage in incest with mothers, daughters, and sisters, drink wine, and abandon prayer."
- .... And al-Dhahabi said: And when Yazid did to the people of Medina what he did, along with his drinking of wine and committing of various indecencies, it became severe for the people, and the residents of Medina rose up, and Allah did not bless his lifespan.
- .... His statement, "what he did," refers to what occurred from him in the year 63 AH when he heard that the people of Medina had risen against him and deposed him. So he sent a great army against them and commanded them to kill them, and they came to him, and the event at Al-Harrah took place at the gates of Tayyibah. And after their consensus on his wrongdoing, they differed on the permissibility of condemning him by specifically naming him, but some, including Ibn al-Jawzi, deemed it permissible.
- .... He relayed this from Ahmad ibn Hanbal and others. Ibn al-Jawzi stated in his book entitled (Al-Radd 'ala al-Mut'aṣsib al-'Anid al-Mani' min La'n Yazid): "Someone asked me about Yazid ibn Muawiyah, and I said to him: Enough for him is what he is in. He said, 'Is it permissible to curse him?' I replied, 'The scholars, including the pious, have permitted it, among them Ahmad ibn Hanbal, for he mentioned regarding Yazid, peace be upon him, something that goes beyond a mere curse.'"
- .... Then Ibn al-Jawzi narrated from al-Qadi Abi Ya'la (al-Farra') that he reported his book: Al-Mu'tamad fi al-Usool, with a chain up to Salih ibn Ahmad ibn Hanbal, may Allah have mercy on them. He said: I said to my father, "Some people are accusing us of supporting Yazid." He replied, "O son, can anyone who believes in Allah support Yazid? Why should we not curse one whom Allah has cursed in His Book?" I said, "In which verse?" He said, in the Almighty's words: {So, might you expect that if you were to be in power, you would cause corruption in the land and sever your ties of kinship? Those are the ones whom Allah has cursed, so He has made them deaf and blinded their vision (Muhammad 22-23).} Could there be a greater corruption than this killing?
- .... Ibn al-Jawzi said: And al-Qadi Abi Ya'la authored a book in which he identified those who deserve to be cursed, mentioning Yazid among them, and then he mentioned the hadith: "Whoever unjustly frightens the people of Medina, Allah will threaten him, and the curse of Allah, the angels, and all of mankind will be upon him." There is no disagreement that Yazid raided the holy city of Medina with an army and frightened its inhabitants.
