- .... As for Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him), when Ibn Umar pointed out to him to refrain from going to Iraq and opposed him, he embraced him as a farewell and said: "I entrust you to Allah, O one destined to be killed." What Ibn Umar had foreseen came to pass, for when Husayn set out, feeling independent in his decision, Ibn Ziyad sent to him Ubayd Allah ibn Ziyad with a battalion of four thousand men, led by Umar ibn Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas, and this was after Ibn Ziyad had sought to excuse himself, but he did not relent. They met at a place called Karbala in the land of Taff, and Husayn ibn Ali and his companions sought refuge in a small fortified structure there, positioning it at their back while they faced those men. Husayn requested from them one of three things: either to let him return to where he came from, or to allow him to go to a frontier fort and fight there, or to leave him alone until he could go to Yazid ibn Muawiya and place his hand in his, so that Yazid could judge him as he wished. But they refused him any of these options and said: "You must come before Ubayd Allah ibn Ziyad, and he will decide what to do with you." He refused to go to him ever and fought them to the end. They killed him, may Allah have mercy on him, and they took his head to Ubayd Allah ibn Ziyad, placing it between his hands. Ibn Ziyad began to strike his teeth with a stick in his hand, while Anas ibn Malik was sitting nearby. Anas said to him: "O you, raise your stick; it has been a long time since I saw the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him and his holy progeny, kiss these very teeth." Then Ubayd Allah ibn Ziyad ordered that his family and those with him be taken to Syria, to Yazid ibn Muawiya and it is said that he sent the head with them, placing it before Yazid, and at that time he recited the words of one of the poets:
"We split the heads of noble men, * and it weighs heavily upon us, though they were more unjust and blind."

Then the year 61 began - The Martyrdom of Hussein ibn Ali (peace be upon him)

- .... Then he ordered that the head of Hussein be raised on a pole in Kufa and that it be carried in procession through its alleyways, and then he sent it with Zuhar ibn Qays and with him the heads of his companions to Yazid ibn Muawiya in Sham. With Zuhar were a group of horsemen, including Abu Burda ibn Awf al-Azdhi and Tariq ibn Abi Thabyan al-Azdhi. They set out until they arrived with all the heads before Yazid ibn Muawiya.
- And when Hussein was placed before Yazid, he said: By God, if I were your companion, I would not have killed you. Then he recited the words of al-Husayin ibn al-Humam al-Murri, the poet:
"They would split the heads of proud men who were dear to us, while they were more unjust and oppressive."
- Muhammad ibn Humayd al-Razi - and he was a Shi'i - said: Muhammad ibn Yahya al-Ahmari narrated to us, from Layth, from Mujahid, who said: When the head of Hussein was brought and placed before Yazid, he recited these verses:
"Would that my forefathers of Badr had witnessed the grief of the Khazraj in the attack of the arrows.
They would have mourned and wept with joy, then said: Blessed be this, do not ask."
"When the courtyard of their camp was filled and the killing raged among the servants of God,
We killed the weak among your nobles and avenged the tilt of Badr, restoring balance."
Mujahid said: He was indeed being hypocritical in this, and by God, there was not one remaining in his army who did not leave it in disdain, criticizing it.
- The scholars differed afterward on whether Ibn Ziyad sent the head of Hussein to Sham to Yazid or not, with two opinions, the more plausible of which is that he sent it to him, and there are many reports regarding this, and Allah knows best.
- Abu Mukhnaf said, from Abu Hamza al-Thumali, from Abdullah al-Yamani, from al-Qasim ibn Bakhit, who said: When the head of Hussein was placed before Yazid ibn Muawiya, he began to poke at it with a stick he held in his hand, in its mouth, and then said: This is like what al-Husayin ibn al-Humam al-Murri said about it and us:
"They would split the heads of proud men who were dear to us, while they were more unjust and oppressive."

- .... As for the head of Hussein (may he rest in peace), it is commonly known among the historians and those who narrate sirah that Ibn Ziyad sent it to Yazid ibn Muawiya. Some people have denied this, but I think the former is more well-known. And Allah knows best.

15137 - Thaqaq ibn Uthman said: Husayn ibn Ali (peace be upon him) set out to Kufa, displeased with the caliphate of Yazid ibn Muawiya. Yazid ibn Muawiya wrote to Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad, who was governor over Iraq, "It has come to my attention that Husayn is on his way to Kufa, and you have been afflicted with him at this time more than any other time, and your city more than any other city, and you have been tested with him more than any other ruler. You may either free yourself or return to being a slave, as you would control the slaves." So Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad killed him and sent his head to Yazid, and when it was placed before him, he recited the words of al-Husayn ibn Hamam al-Murri:
"We cleave the heads of beloved men, *
To us, they were dear, yet they were the most wronged and unjust."
Narrated by al-Tabarani, and its narrators are trustworthy, except that Thaqaq did not witness the event.

15148 - Ibn Sa'd, meaning al-Layth, narrated from my father, saying: Al-Husayn ibn Ali (peace be upon them) would be captured, while they fought him and killed his sons and companions who had fought alongside him in a place called al-Tuf. And they took Ali ibn Husayn, Fatimah bint Husayn, and Sukayna bint Husayn to Ubayd Allah ibn Ziyad, who was in charge that day of a youth who had reached maturity, and he sent them to Yazid ibn Muawiyah, who commanded that Sukayna be placed behind his couch so that she would not see her father's head and the heads of her relatives, while Ali ibn Husayn was in chains. He lowered his head and struck the two front teeth of al-Husayn, saying:
"We split the heads of men who were dear to us, *although they were the most unjust and misguided."
Ali ibn Husayn replied: {No calamity befalls you in the earth or in yourselves but it is in a register before We bring it into being. Indeed, that, for Allah, is easy} (Quran 57:22). It weighed heavily on Yazid that Ali ibn Husayn would express himself with a couplet and recite a verse from the Book of Allah, the Almighty. Yazid said instead: {And whatever misfortune befalls you is because of what your own hands have earned, and He overlooks many} (Quran 42:30). Ali replied: "By Allah, if the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) were to see us chained, he would wish to free us from the chains." Yazid said, "You have spoken the truth," and ordered them to be released from the chains. He continued: "Even if we stood between the hands of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) at a distance, he would wish to bring us closer." Yazid replied, "You have spoken the truth," and commanded them to be brought closer. Thus, Fatimah and Sukayna began to stretch to see their father's head, while Yazid tried to lean in his seat to cover his head. Then he ordered them to be properly equipped and sent off and escorted to Medina. This was narrated by al-Tabarani, and its narrators are trustworthy.

- .... And Umar ibn Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas came, and Ubayd Allah ibn Ziyad had appointed him over the army. He requested Ubayd Allah to relieve him of that, but he refused. Then Al-Husayn said: "Choose one of three options: either you let me go, and I will join the garrisons, or I go to Yazid, or I am sent back to Medina." Umar accepted this and wrote to Ubayd Allah about it. Ubayd Allah wrote back: "Not without first showing you honor until you place your hand in mine." Al-Husayn replied: "No, by Allah," and fought until he was killed. His companions were killed, including a dozen or so young men from his family. Then an arrow came and struck one of his young sons, and he began to wipe the blood from him, saying: "O Allah, judge between us and our people who invited us to help them, then kill us." Then he continued to fight until he was killed. A man from the Madhhij struck him down and severed his head, then went on with it to Ubayd Allah, saying:
"Load my camel's saddlebags with gold, for I have killed the veiled king. I have killed the best of people, mother and father."
He sent his head to Yazid, placing it before him, and Abu Barzah al-Aslami was with him. Yazid began to poke at the head with a stick, saying:
"We split open the heads of noble men * who were dear to us, yet they were the most ungrateful and unjust."

She said: A man entered upon Yazid and said: 'Rejoice, for Allah has granted you power over al-Husayn,' and the head was brought. He placed it in a basin, and then ordered the servant to uncover it. When he saw it, he covered his face, as if he had smelled something of it. I said to her, 'Did he strike its teeth with a stick?' She replied, 'By Allah, yes.' Then Hamzah added: And some of our people informed me that he saw the head of al-Husayn crucified in Damascus for three days."

There he may be freed or return to being a slave, just as slaves are subjugated." So Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad killed him and sent his head to Yazid, and when it was placed before him, he recited the words of Al-Husayn ibn al-Hammam:

"We shatter skulls of those who hope for our loved ones, while they were the most ungrateful and unjust."
"By Allah, if I had been your companion, I would never have killed you." Ali ibn al-Husayn replied, "It is not like this." He asked, "How, son of my mother?" He answered, "{No disaster strikes upon the earth or among yourselves, except that it is in a Register before We bring it into being. Indeed, that, for Allah, is easy} (Surah al-Hadid 57:22)." - .... They said: Then Ibn Ziyad prepared Ali ibn al-Husayn and those with him from the sacred women and sent them to Yazid ibn Muawiya with Zahr ibn Qays, Mahqin ibn Thalaba, and Shumar ibn Dhi al-Jawshan and they traveled until they arrived in Syria and entered upon Yazid ibn Muawiya in the city of Damascus, and they brought with them the head of al-Husayn and placed it before him. Then Shumar ibn Dhi al-Jawshan spoke and said: O Commander of the Faithful, this came to us with eighteen men from his family and sixty men from his followers. We approached them and asked them to submit to the judgment of our commander, Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad, or to fight. So we went to them at the sunrise, and surrounded them from every side. When the swords took hold of them, they began to flee to any refuge, like doves fleeing from falcons. It was only a matter of slicing a few necks or a brief moment of rest until we came upon the last of them. And behold, those bodies were bare, their clothes tattered, and their cheeks dusted, with the winds swirling around them, while their visitors were the eagles and their envoys the vultures. When Yazid heard this, tears filled his eyes, and he said: Woe to you! I would have been satisfied with less from your obedience than the killing of al-Husayn. May Allah curse ibn Murjan! By Allah, if I had been his companion, I would have forgiven him. May Allah have mercy on Abu Abdullah. Then he recited:
"We split the heads of mighty men * who were dear to us, though they were more unjust and oppressive."

Ubaydullah ordered him to be killed, so Zaynab, daughter of Ali, threw herself over him and said: "He will not be killed until you kill me." He was moved by her, so he left him and restrained himself. Then he prepared them and sent them to Yazid, and when they were brought before him, he gathered those who were in his presence from the people of Shaam and then they were brought in to him. They congratulated him on the victory. A man among them, red and blue-eyed, stood up and looked at a young woman from among their daughters and said: "O Commander of the Faithful, gift me this one." Zaynab replied: "By Allah, no, neither as a mark of respect to you nor to him, unless he leaves the religion of Allah." The blue-eyed man repeated his request, but Yazid said: "Enough," and then he had them taken to his family, where he prepared them and sent them to Medina.

Al-Hasan resembled the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) most in appearance from the chest to the head, while al-Husayn resembled the Messenger of Allah in all that was below that.
