11 - My father said: Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us, saying: Sa'id ibn Qumadhin informed us, from Uthman ibn Abi Sulayman, who said: When al-Mukhtar sent the head of Umar ibn Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas to Medina, it was placed before Ali ibn al-Husayn, and he fell down in prostration.

746 - Umar ibn Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas al-Zuhri Abu Hafs al-Madani resided in Kufa. He narrated from his father and Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, and his son Ibrahim and his grandson Abu Bakr ibn Hafs ibn Umar narrated from him, as well as Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i, al-Ayizar ibn Hurrith, Yazid ibn Abi Maryam, Qatadah, al-Zuhri, Yazid ibn Abi Habib, and others. Al-'Ijli said: He used to narrate Hadiths from his father, and people narrated from him. He is a trustworthy (thiqah)tabi'i, and he is the one who killed Hussain.
- Ibn Abi Khaythamah mentioned with a chain that ibn Ziyad sent Umar ibn Sa'd with an army to fight Hussain and sent Shimir ibn al-Jawshan, saying to him: Go with him, and if you kill him, or else kill him, and you will be in charge of the people.
- Ibn Abi Khaythamah said, from Ibn Ma'in: How can one who killed Hussain be trustworthy?
- Amr ibn Ali said: Did you hear Yahya ibn Sa'id say to us: Ismai'il narrated to us: al-Ayizar from Umar ibn Sa'd, and Musa, a man from Banu Dhabiyah, said to him: O Abu Sa'id, this is the killer of Hussain. He fell silent, and then asked him about the killer of Hussain, and he remained silent.
- Ibn Khurash narrated from Amr ibn Ali something similar, and said: A man said to him: Do you not fear Allah, narrating from Umar ibn Sa'd? He wept and said: I will not do it again.
- Al-Humaydi said: Sufyan narrated to us from Salim, who said:Umar ibn Sa'd said to Hussain: A group of foolish people claim that I will kill you. Hussain replied, "They are not foolish," then said, "By Allah, you will not eat in the land of Iraq after me except for a little."
- Ibn Sa'd said: Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad had appointed Umar ibn Sa'd over Rayy and Humadan, and when Hussain arrived in Iraq, ibn Ziyad ordered him to march against Hussain and summoned four thousand of his soldiers to go with him. Umar refused this, so ibn Ziyad said to him: If you do not do it, I will remove you from your position and demolish your house. He obeyed and went out to Hussain, fighting him until Hussain was killed....

Umar ibn Sa'd had children named Hafs and Hafsah, and their mother was Umm Hafs, whose name was Maryam bint Amir ibn Abi Waqqas, and Abdullah the Elder, whose mother was a concubine named Salmah, and Abd al-Rahman the Younger, and Um Amr, and their mother was Umm Yahya, daughter of Abdullah ibn Madi Karb ibn Qays ibn Madi Karb from Kindah, and Hamzah, Abd al-Rahman, Muhammad, and Mughirah, who had no surviving offspring, and Hamzah the Younger, and their mother was a concubine, and Muhammad the Younger, and Mughirah, and Abdullah, all from the mothers of the concubines, and Abdullah the Younger, whose mother was from Kindah, and Umm Yahya, and Umm Salamah, and Umm Kulthum, and Humaydah, and Hafsah the Younger, and Um Amr the Younger, and Umm Abdullah, all from the mothers of concubines. Umar ibn Sa'd was in Kufa, and Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad appointed him to govern Ray and Hamadhan, and sent an expedition with him. When Husayn ibn Ali (peace be upon him) came to Iraq, Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad commanded Umar ibn Sa'd to march against him and sent four thousand of his soldiers with him, saying: If he comes out to you and places his hand in mine, then you may return, otherwise, fight him. Umar refused to comply with this. Ubaydullah said: If you do not do this, I will remove you from your position and demolish your house. So he obeyed and prepared to go out to Husayn, and fought him until Husayn was killed. When al-Mukhtar ibn Abi Ubayd al-Thaqafi gained ascendancy over Kufa, he killed Umar ibn Sa'd and his son Hafs.

4791 - Mukhtar ibn Abi Ubayd ibn Mas'ud ibn Amr ibn Umayr ibn Awf ibn 'Aqdah ibn Ghirah ibn Awf ibn Thaqif al-Thaqafi Abu Ishaq. His father was one of the notable Companions, and Mukhtar was born in the year of the hijrah. He had no companionship (suhbah) or narrations (riwayah) .... And he killed Umar ibn Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas, who was the commander of the army that killed Hussein.

6116 - Umar ibn Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas al-Zuhri is not himself suspicious, but he directly engaged in the fighting against al-Husayn and committed various atrocities.
- Shu'bah narrated from Abu Ishaq, from al-Ayyizar ibn Hurayth, from Umar ibn Sa'd, and a man stood up to him and said: "Do you not fear God? You narrate from Umar ibn Sa'd." He cried and said: "I will not do it again."
- And al-'Ujli said: People narrated from him; he was a trustworthy follower.
- Ahmad ibn Zuhair said: I asked ibn Ma'in, "Is Umar ibn Sa'd trustworthy?" He replied: "How can one who killed al-Husayn be trustworthy?" Khalifah said: He was killed by al-Mukhtar in the year 65 AH.

- Umar ibn Sa'ad ibn Abi Waqqas al-Zuhri al-Madani: A commander among the brave leaders. Ubayd Allah ibn Ziyad sent him with four thousand to fight the Daylam, and he wrote him a testament to govern Rayy. Then, when ibn Ziyad learned of the march of Husayn ibn Ali (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) from Mecca towards Kufa, he wrote to the person the account is about to return with those accompanying him, and so he returned. Then ibn Ziyad entrusted him with the task of fighting Husayn, but he sought to be excused. Ibn Ziyad threatened him, so he obeyed and set out to confront Husayn, and the tragedy occurred with his death. Umar lived until al-Mukhtar al-Thaqafi emerged, seeking the killers of Husayn, and he sent someone to kill him in Kufa.

He is the one who killed al-Husayn. He said in another place: Umar ibn Sa'd ibn Malik was followed by a trustworthy person, and he is the one who killed al-Husayn.
- Abu al-Barakat also narrated to us, saying: Abu al-Husayn ibn al-Tayyuri narrated to us, and al-‘Utiqi narrated to us. And Abu Abdullah al-Balkhi narrated to us through Thabit ibn Bundar, both saying: Al-Walid narrated to us, and Ali ibn Ahmad narrated to us, and Salih ibn Ahmad narrated to me from his father, saying: Umar ibn Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas was a Kufi Tabi'i, and he is the one who killed al-Husayn.

- Abu Ghalib and Abu Abdullah, the sons of al-Hasan ibn al-Banna, narrated to us, saying: Abu al-Husayn ibn al-Abnusi narrated to us, saying: Ahmad ibn Ubayd ibn al-Fadl narrated to us, granting permission, saying: Muhammad ibn al-Hasan narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Khuzaimah, who said: I asked Yahya ibn Ma'in about Umar ibn Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas. He said: He is from Kufa. I said: Trustworthy? He replied: How can he be trustworthy, one who killed Husayn?

- .... Word of his خروج (departure) reached Yazid, so he wrote to Ubayd Allah ibn Ziyad, his governor in Iraq, ordering him to fight him and bring him to him if he could capture him. So the accursed Ubayd Allah ibn Ziyad sent an army to him along with Umar ibn Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas, and al-Husayn adjusted his course to Karbala. Umar ibn Sa'd met him there, and they engaged in battle, and al-Husayn, may Allah's peace, mercy, and blessings be upon him, was killed, and Allah's curse was upon his killer. His death occurred on the tenth day of Muharram, the Day of Ashura, in the year 61.

- .... So the news reached an-Nu'mān ibn Bashīr, who was the governor of Kufa on behalf of Yazid. He said in a sermon: "Beware of opposing Yazid ibn Mu'awiya. Whoever among you becomes an opponent to my words, I will strike off his neck!" Then Abd Allah al-Hadharṣumī, seeing that an-Nu'mān's opinion was weak, sent a letter to Yazid mentioning the people's allegiance to Muslim and the weakness of an-Nu'mān's position. So Yazid sent ʿUmar ibn Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ to Ibn Ziyād, who was in Basra, with a letter instructing him to travel to Kufa and not to leave any of the Banu Ali alive except to kill them.

Umar ibn Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas stood up and said, "I will." Ibn Ziyad replied, "Go to him, prevent him from drinking water, and bring me his head." So, the children of the emigrants and the helpers came to Umar and said: "O son of Sa'd, will you go out to fight Hussain (peace be upon him), while your father is one of the sixth of Islam?" He replied, "I will not do that."
