Al-Haythami - Majma' al-Zawa'id wa Manba' al-Fawa'id - Book of Signs of Prophethood - Chapter on His (peace be upon him) knowledge of the unseen:
Volume: (8) - Page Number: (290)
14076 - On the authority of Aws ibn Khalid, who said: Whenever I visited Abu Mahdhurah, he would ask me about a man, and whenever I visited that man, he would ask me about Abu Mahdhurah. So I said to Abu Mahdhurah: "If someone comes to you, he will ask me about so-and-so, and if I visit so-and-so, he will ask me about you." He replied: "I was in a house with Abu Hurairah and so-and-so, and the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'The last of you to die will be in the Fire.'" So Abu Hurairah died, then Abu Mahdhurah died, and then the man died. This was narrated by al-Tabarani, and Aws ibn Khalid was not reported to have narrated from him except by Ali ibn Zayd, and there is some criticism regarding both of them, but the rest of the narrators are men of authenticity.

14077 - Abu Yunus narrated that he said: "I was a trader in the city (Medina), and whenever I arrived in Medina, Abu Huraira would ask me about Samurah ibn Jundub. And when I arrived in Basra, Samurah would ask me about Abu Huraira." Abu Huraira said, "There were seven of us in a house, and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) entered upon us and said, 'The last of you to die will be in the Fire.' None remained except for me and Samurah." I said, "Perhaps he meant the fire of this world," and Samurah died in that manner." And Allah knows best. Al-Tabarani narrated it in al-Awsat, and in it is Ali ibn Zayd ibn Jud'aan, who was trusted but considered weak. The rest of its men are men of authenticity (sahih).

Abu Huraira said, 'There were seven of us in a house when the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) entered upon us and said, 'The last of you to die will be in the Fire.' Only I and Samura remained.'" This hadith was not narrated from Yunus ibn Ubayd except by Abu Marwan Yahya ibn Abi Zakariya al-Ghassani, and Muhammad ibn Harb was unique in this.

- And Abd al-Rahman ibn Yahya narrated to us, saying: Ahmad ibn Sa'id narrated to us, saying: Ishaq ibn Ibrahim narrated to us, who said: Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Marwan narrated to us, saying: Ahmad ibn Hanbal narrated to us, and mentioned him with a similar chain. Samurah was among the diligent narrators and preservers from Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny). He passed away in Basrah during the caliphate of Mu'awiyah in the year fifty-eight. He fell into a pot filled with hot water that he had been sitting on to treat a severe case of stiffness he had suffered, and he fell into the hot pot and died. Thus, this was a confirmation of the words of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) to him, Abu Huraira, and a third with them: "The last of you to die will be in the Fire."

- .... And Sumrah was among the many hadith scholars who narrated frequently from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), and he passed away in Basra in the year fifty-eight. He fell into a pot filled with hot water, in which he had been trying to treat himself by sitting, for a severe stiffness he had suffered, and he fell into the hot pot and died. This was seen as a confirmation of the words of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) to him, Abu Huraira, and a third person with them: "The last of you to die will be in the Fire."

- .... And Dawud ibn al-Mahbhar al-Bukrawi reported from Ziyad ibn Ubaydullah ibn al-Rabi' al-Ziyadi, from Muhammad ibn Sirin: "You should pay attention to the message of Sumrah ibn Jundub to his sons, for it contains good knowledge." We said, "O Abu Bakr, tell us about Sumrah and what happened regarding him, and what was said about him." He replied: "Sumrah was afflicted by a severe itch that hardly allowed him to stay warm, so he ordered a large pot to be filled with water and a fire to be lit underneath it, and a seating area to be made above it. He would then ascend to it, as its steam would warm him. While he was doing this, he was suddenly engulfed in a sinkhole, and it is believed that this is what was said regarding him."

- .... Mu'adh ibn Mu'adh said: Shu'bah narrated to us from Abī Muslimah, from Abī Nadrah from Abū Hurayrah that the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said to ten - in a house - of his companions: "The last of you to die will be in the Fire," among them was Sumrah ibn Jundub. Abī Nadrah said: So, Sumrah was the last of them to die. This is a very strange hadith, and it has not been established that Abī Nadrah heard this from Abū Hurayrah, though it has some supporting evidence.
- .... And a similar narration was reported by Ḥammād ibn Salamah from Alī ibn Jud'ān, from Aws ibn Khālid, who said: Whenever I came to Abī Muḥdhirah, he would ask me about Sumrah, and whenever I visited Sumrah, he would ask me about Abī Muḥdhirah. So, I said to Abī Muḥdhirah regarding this, and he replied: "I and he and Abū Hurayrah were in a house when the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) came and said: 'The last of you to die will be in the Fire,'" so Abū Hurayrah died first, and then Abū Muḥdhirah died."

- .... And Mu'adh ibn Mu'adh said: Shu'bah narrated to us from Abu Salamah from Abu Nadrah from Abu Huraira that the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said to ten of his companions in a house: "The last of you to die will be in the Fire among them is Sumara ibn Jundub." Abu Nadrah said: And Sumara was the last of them to die.
- .... And Ma'mar said: Abdullah ibn Tawus and others narrated to us that the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said to Sumara ibn Jundub, to Abu Huraira, and to another: "The last of you to die will be in the Fire." A man died, and it became the case that if someone wanted to provoke Abu Huraira, he would say: "Sumara has died." If he heard this, he would faint and fall down, then Abu Huraira died before Sumara, and Sumara killed many people.
- .... Abdullah ibn Mu'awiya al-Jumahi narrated from a man that Sumara was using stones for cleanliness and became oblivious to himself and they became oblivious of him until he was taken.
- .... Wahb ibn Jarir from his father heard Abu Yazid al-Madani say: When Sumara fell ill, he was struck by a severe chill, and a fire was kindled for him in a pan between his hands, a pan behind him, a pan on his right, and another on his left, and he would not benefit from that. He would say: "How can I deal with what is in my belly?" He remained like this until he died. If this is true, then, God willing, his statement, peace be upon him and his holy progeny, "the last of you to die will be in the Fire," relates to his death in the Fire, not to himself.
