9167 - Al-Walid ibn Uqbah ibn Abi Mu'ayt, Aban ibn Abi Amr, Dhakwān ibn Umayyah ibn Abd Shams ibn Abd Manaf al-Umari, brother of Uthman ibn Affan through his mother. Their mother was Arwah bint Kurayz ibn Rubi'ah ibn Habib ibn Abd Shams, and their grandmother was al-Baydā' bint Abd al-Muttalib. He was nicknamed Abu Wahb .... Al-Walid and his brother 'Imarah embraced Islam on the Day of Conquest, and it is said that the following was revealed concerning them: {O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with a report, investigate,} (Surah Al-Hujurat 49:6) and the following verse.
- Ibn Abd al-Barr said: There is no disagreement among the people of knowledge regarding the interpretation of the Quran that it was revealed concerning this, and that is because the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent him as a confirmer to the Banu al-Mustalaq, but he returned and reported that they had apostasized and were withholding almsgiving, and they had come out to meet him armed. So he thought they had come out to fight him, and he returned. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent Khalid ibn al-Walid to them, and he informed him that they were upon Islam. Then this verse was revealed. I say: This story was narrated by Abdul Razzaq in his Tafsir from Ma'mar, from Qatadah, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent Al-Walid ibn Uqbah to the Banu al-Mustalaq, and they met him, and he recognized them. He returned and said, "They have apostasized." So the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent Khalid ibn al-Walid to them. When Khalid approached them, he sent spies at night, and they were calling to prayer and praying. Khalid came to them and saw nothing but obedience and goodness among them. He returned to the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and informed him, and this verse was revealed.

- .... He said: "There is no disagreement among the people of knowledge concerning interpretation that His statement, Exalted be He: {O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with a report, investigate,} (Surah Al-Hujurat 49:6) was revealed concerning Al-Walid ibn Uqbah. This is because the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent him as a collector to Banu al-Mustalaq, and when he reached them, he feared them, so he turned back and reported that they had apostatized." He then sent Khalid ibn al-Walid to them and ordered him to ascertain the truth about them, and he was informed that they were firmly adhering to Islam. He has narrations in which there is strangeness and grotesqueness, and he was one of the most refined and composed men of Quraysh, possessing forbearance, courage, and propriety. He was also a distinguished poet. His story of leading them in prayer while drunk and saying, "Would you like me to add more?" after praying four rak'ahs following the dawn prayer is well-known in the accounts of trustworthy narrators.
