- .... Abu al-Faraj al-Asbahani narrated in his book al-Aghani, and al-Wahidi, Ibn Adi, Ibn Marduyah, al-Khatib, and Ibn Asakir reported through various chains from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: Al-Walid ibn Uqbah said to Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him): "I am mightier with a spear than you, more fluent of tongue than you, and fuller in the battalion than you." Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) replied, "Be silent, for you are nothing but a transgressor," and then the verse descended: {So is one who is a believer like one who is a transgressor? They are not equal. (As-Sajdah 32:18)} meaning that the believer was Ali and the transgressor was Al-Walid ibn Uqbah ibn Abi Mu'ayt.
- .... Ibn Ishaq and Ibn Jarir narrated from Ata ibn Yasar who said: This was revealed in Medina about Ali ibn Abi Talib and Al-Walid ibn Uqbah ibn Abi Mu'ayt. There was some exchange of words between Al-Walid and Ali, and Al-Walid ibn Uqbah said: "I am more fluent of tongue than you, mightier with a spear than you, and more commanding in the battalion than you." Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) replied, "Be silent, for you are a transgressor," then Allah revealed: {So is one who is a believer like one who is a transgressor? They are not equal. (As-Sajdah 32:18)} the entire passage.
- .... Ibn Abi Hatim narrated from Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Layla (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding the verse: {So is one who is a believer like one who is a transgressor? They are not equal. (As-Sajdah 32:18)} who said: This was revealed concerning Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) and Al-Walid ibn Uqbah.
- .... Ibn Marduyah, al-Khatib, and Ibn Asakir narrated from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding the verse: {So is one who is a believer like one who is a transgressor? They are not equal. (As-Sajdah 32:18)} who said: The believer was Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him), and the transgressor was Uqbah ibn Abi Mu'ayt, due to an argument that occurred between them, and Allah revealed this.

- .... Ahmad, Ibn Abi Hatim, al-Tabarani, Ibn Mundah, and Ibn Marduyah narrated with a good chain from al-Harith ibn Durar al-Khuza'i who said: I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), and he called me to Islam, so I entered it and affirmed it. He then called me to zakat (almsgiving), and I affirmed that as well. I said, "O Messenger of Allah, return to my people and invite them to Islam and the giving of zakat. Whoever responds to me, I will collect their zakat, and they will send to you, O Messenger of Allah, a messenger who will stay [with me] for such and such time to bring you what I have collected in zakat." When al-Harith collected the zakat from those who responded to him and it became apparent that he intended what the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) wanted to send to him, the messenger delayed and did not come. Al-Harith thought that this was because of some displeasure from Allah and His Messenger. So he called for urgency and went to his people and said to them: "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) had appointed me a time to send his messenger to collect the zakat from me, and there is no failure from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny). I do not see the delay of his messenger except as a sign of his displeasure." Then he said, "Let us go and approach the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny)." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent al-Walid ibn Uqbah to al-Harith to collect what he had gathered from the zakat. When al-Walid set out and reached some distance, he became fearful and returned. He went to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I encountered a people in their ignorance who took up arms and denied me the zakat." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) did not change that until the verse was revealed: {O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with a report, investigate...} (Surah al-Hujurat 49:6). Then the al-Mustalqim tribe came to the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) in response to al-Walid with a portion of their almsgiving.
- .... Al-Tabarani and Ibn Mundah and Ibn Marduyah narrated from Alqamah ibn Najiyyah, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent al-Walid ibn Uqbah ibn Abi Mu'ayt to collect the zakat of our property. He traveled until he was near us, and this was after the Battle of al-Muraysi, then he returned. I rode after him and he came to the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I came to a people in their ignorance who took up arms and denied me the zakat." However, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) did not change that until the verse was revealed: {O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with a report, investigate...} (Surah al-Hujurat 49:6).
- .... Al-Tabarani in al-Awsat narrated from Jabir ibn Abdullah, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent al-Walid ibn Uqbah to Banu Waki'ah, and there was enmity between them in the Days of Ignorance. When he reached Banu Waki'ah, they confronted him to see what he thought. The people feared him, so he returned to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and said: "Banu Waki'ah wanted to kill me and denied me the zakat." When Banu Waki'ah heard what al-Walid said, they came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, al-Walid has lied." Then Allah revealed regarding al-Walid: {O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with a report, investigate...} (Surah al-Hujurat 49:6).
- .... Ibn Rahuyah, Ibn Jarir, al-Tabarani, and Ibn Marduyah narrated from Umm Salamah who said: The Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent al-Walid ibn Uqbah to Banu al-Mustalq to collect their zakat. When the people heard of this, they went out to meet him, honoring the command of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny). However, the devil instilled in him that they wanted to kill him, so he returned to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and said: "Banu al-Mustalq denied me their almsgiving." When the people learned of his return, they went to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and said: "We seek refuge in Allah from the anger of Allah and the anger of His Messenger. You sent us a man to collect almsgiving, and we were glad about it and our eyes were comforted. Then he returned from some distance, and we fear this may be displeasure from Allah and His Messenger." Then the verse was revealed: {O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with a report, investigate...} (Surah al-Hujurat 49:6).

- .... Ibn Jarir, Ibn Marduyah, al-Bayhaqi in his Sunan, and Ibn Asakir narrated from Ibn Abbas, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent al-Walid ibn Uqbah ibn Abi Mu'it to Banu al-Mustalaq to take alms from them. When he reached them, they rejoiced and came out to meet the Messenger of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny). When al-Walid heard that they had come out to welcome him, he returned and said: O Messenger, indeed Banu al-Mustalaq have denied me the alms. This greatly angered the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny). While he was contemplating attacking them, the delegation came to him and said: O Messenger of Allah, we have heard that your messenger has returned from halfway, and we feared that he was only turned back by a letter sent to him from you due to an anger you felt against us. Then Allah revealed: {O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with a report, investigate} (Surah al-Hujurat 49:6), the verse.
- .... Adam, Abd ibn Hamid, Ibn Jarir, Ibn Mundhir, and al-Bayhaqi narrated from Mujahid, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent al-Walid ibn Uqbah ibn Abi Mu'it to Banu al-Mustalaq to receive their charity, and they greeted him with a gift. He returned to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and said: Indeed, Banu al-Mustalaq have gathered to fight you. Then Allah revealed: {O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with a report, investigate} (Surah al-Hujurat 49:6).
- .... Ibn Marduyah narrated from Jabir ibn Abdullah, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent al-Walid ibn Uqbah to Banu Waki'a, and there was enmity between them from the time of ignorance (Jahiliyya). When al-Walid reached Banu Waki'a, they came out to see what was in his heart, and the people feared him, so he returned to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and said: Indeed, Banu Waki'a wanted to kill me and denied me the alms. When Banu Waki'a learned what al-Walid had said to them at the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), they came to him and said: O Messenger of Allah, al-Walid has lied, but there was enmity between him and us, and we feared that he would retaliate with what had happened between us. Then Allah revealed about al-Walid: {O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with a report, investigate} (Surah al-Hujurat 49:6), the verse.

- .... Abd ibn Hamid narrated from al-Hasan that a man came to the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and said: "O Prophet of Allah, the sons of so-and-so are a tribe of the Arabs, and he harbored something against them in his heart. They were recent converts to Islam who had abandoned prayer and had apostatized and disbelieved in Allah." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) did not rush and called Khalid ibn al-Walid, sending him to them. He then said: "Observe them during prayer; if the people have abandoned prayer, then deal with them as you wish, but if not, do not rush to judgment." So, he approached them near sunset and concealed himself where he could hear the prayer. He observed that when the sun set, the caller to prayer stood up, gave the adhan (call to prayer), and then established the prayer, and they prayed Maghrib (the evening prayer). Khalid ibn al-Walid said: "I do not see them doing anything but praying. Perhaps they have only abandoned this prayer." He then hid again until, when night began to fall and the twilight was gone, one of their callers to prayer gave the adhan, and they prayed. He said: "Perhaps they have abandoned another prayer," and he concealed himself again until it was the middle of the night. He then approached and looked over the edges of their houses and saw the people learning something of the Quran and they were praying while engaged in night prayers. Then he went to them in the morning, and saw the caller to prayer giving the adhan as dawn broke, and then establishing the prayer, and they stood and prayed. When they finished and daylight illuminated them, they were at the head of horses in their homes. They said: "What is this?" They were told: "Khalid ibn al-Walid is here." He was a man of harsh demeanor. They said: "O Khalid, what is the matter with you?" He replied: "You are, by Allah, my matter! I went to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), and it was said to him: 'You have disbelieved in Allah and abandoned prayer.'" They all began to weep and said: "We seek refuge in Allah from ever disbelieving in Allah!" The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) then dismissed Khalid and sent him back from them until he met the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), and Allah revealed: {O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with a report, investigate it (Surah al-Hujurat 49:6)}. Al-Hasan said: "By Allah, even if it was revealed specifically about these people, it is a message sent until the Day of Resurrection, and nothing will abrogate it."
- .... Abd ibn Hamid narrated from Ikrimah that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent al-Walid ibn Uqbah to Banu al-Mustalaq to collect their alms from them, but he did not reach them and returned. He said to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny): "They have disobeyed." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) intended to prepare an expedition against them when a man from Banu al-Mustalaq came and said to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny): "We heard that you sent to us, and we were happy and rejoiced at this, but your messenger did not reach us and spoke falsely." Allah revealed a verse about him and called him a disobedient one: {O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with a report, investigate it (Surah al-Hujurat 49:6)}.
- .... Abd ibn Hamid and Ibn Jarir narrated from Qatadah: {O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with a report, investigate it (Surah al-Hujurat 49:6)} and said: "He is Ibn Abi Mu'ayt. Al-Walid ibn Uqbah was sent by the Prophet of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) to Banu al-Mustalaq to collect alms from them. When they saw him, they approached him, but he feared them and returned to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and informed him: 'They have apostasized from Islam.'" The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent Khalid ibn al-Walid and commanded him to be firm and not to rush. So, he went until he came to them at night and sent out his spies. When they arrived, they informed him that they were firmly adhering to Islam and that he heard their call to prayer and saw them praying. When morning came, he went to them, and Khalid saw something that pleased him. He returned to the Prophet of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and informed him of the news. Allah then revealed Quranic verses about this, and the Prophet of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) would say: "Deliberation is from Allah, and haste is from Satan."

Al-Wahidi and Ibn Asakir narrated from the route of Sa'id ibn Jubair from Ibn Abbas, who said: Al-Walid ibn Uqbah ibn Abi Mu'it said to Ali ibn Abi Talib: "I am one of you in age, more fluent of tongue than you, and more commanding in the battalion, praying in your presence, " Ali replied, "Silence, for you are nothing but a depraved one." - .... Ahmad and others narrated with a good chain from al-Harith ibn Dhurar al-Khuzami, who said: I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), and he invited me to Islam, so I acknowledged it and entered it. Then he called me to zakat (almsgiving), and I acknowledged it and said: O Messenger of Allah, return to my people and invite them to Islam and the giving of zakat. Whoever responds to me, I will collect their zakat and you can send to me at an appointed time, so they can bring you what I have collected from the zakat. When al-Harith collected the zakat and the time arrived, the messenger was delayed and did not come to him. Al-Harith thought that perhaps something had changed, so he called the noblemen of his people and said to them: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) had set a time to send his messenger to receive the zakat from me, and it is not like the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) to go back on his word, nor do I know if his messenger is delayed except from something that has caused displeasure. So, go and we will come to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny). And the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent al-Walid ibn Uqbah to collect what was with him. However, when al-Walid set out, he became frightened and returned, saying: Al-Harith has denied me the zakat and wants to kill me. So, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) struck out towards al-Harith, and al-Harith came with his companions when they met the group. He said to them: Where are you going? They said: To you. He asked: Why? They replied: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent al-Walid ibn Uqbah to you, and he claimed that you denied him the zakat and wanted to kill him. He said: No, by the One who sent Muhammad with the truth, I did not see him, nor did he come to me. When he entered the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), he said: Did you deny the zakat and want to kill my messenger? He replied: No, by the One who sent you with the truth. Then the following was revealed: {O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with a report, investigate (Surah al-Hujurat 49:6)} to the verse: {And Allah is Knowing and Wise (Surah al-Hujurat 49:8)} The men in its chain are trustworthy.
