- .... { "So is one who is a believer like one who is a transgressor? They are not equal" (As-Sajdah 32:18) } This verse contains three issues: First - His statement, Exalted be He: { "So is one who is a believer like one who is a transgressor? They are not equal" (As-Sajdah 32:18) } Meaning, the believer is not like the transgressor, and that is why We have given these believers a great reward. Ibn Abbas and Ata ibn Yasar said: This verse was revealed concerning Ali ibn Abi Talib and al-Walid ibn Uqbah ibn Abi Mu'it, as they had a heated argument. Al-Walid said to him, "I am more eloquent than you and have a better grasp of weapons, and I can stand my ground against you in the battalion" - and it is reported that he said, "and I can be more imposing in the battalion." Ali replied to him, "Be silent, for you are a transgressor," and the verse was revealed.... Al-Zajjaj and al-Nahhas mentioned that it was revealed concerning Ali and Uqbah ibn Abi Mu'it.

Al-Qurtubi - Tafsir al-Qurtubi - al-Jami' li Ahkam al-Quran - Surah al-Hujurat (49): 6
His statement, exalted be He: "O you who have believed, if there comes to you a dissolute person with a report, investigate..."
Volume: (16) - Page Number: (282)
[The text is lengthy, so only the relevant excerpt is provided here]
- .... His statement, exalted be He: {O you who have believed, if there comes to you a dissolute person with a report, investigate...} (al-Hujurat 49:6) contains seven issues: First - His statement, exalted be He: {O you who have believed, if there comes to you a dissolute person with a report, investigate...} (al-Hujurat 49:6) It is said that this verse was revealed concerning al-Walid ibn Uqbah ibn Abi Mu'it, and the reason for this is what Sa'id reported from Qatadah, that the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent al-Walid ibn Uqbah as a collector to Banu al-Mustalif. When they saw him, they came towards him, and he feared them - in another narration, it was reported that there was a quarrel between him and them - so he returned to the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and informed him that they had reverted from Islam. Then the Prophet of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent Khalid ibn al-Walid and commanded him to verify and not to act hastily. Khalid went until he reached them at night and sent out his spies. When they returned, they informed Khalid that the people were firmly adhering to Islam and that they heard their call to prayer and saw them praying. When morning came, Khalid went to them and saw that what they had reported was true, so he returned to the Prophet of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and informed him, and this verse was then revealed.
- .... In another narration, it is mentioned that the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent him to Banu al-Mustalif after their conversion to Islam. When they heard of him, they rode out to him. However, when he heard of them, he feared them and returned to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), informing him that the people were intending to kill him and were refusing to give their alms. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) was then intending to attack them. While they were in this situation, their delegation came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and said, "O Messenger of Allah, we heard about your messenger and came out to honor him and deliver to him what we had received as alms." He continued to return, and it reached us that he claims to the Messenger of Allah that we came out to fight him. By Allah, we did not come out for that." Then Allah, the Exalted, revealed this verse, and al-Walid was named a dissolute, meaning a liar.
