His statement, exalted be He: {O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with a report, investigate...}
Volume: (10) - Page Number: (3303)
18608 - Muhammad ibn Sabik narrated to us, saying: Isa ibn Dinar narrated to us, from my father, who said that he heard Al-Harith ibn Dhurar Al-Khuza'i say: I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), and he called me to Islam, so I entered it and acknowledged it. He then called me to zakat, and I acknowledged that as well. I said, "O Messenger of Allah, return to them and invite them to Islam and the performance of zakat." Those who responded to me, I would collect their zakat, and he could send a messenger to the Messenger of Allah at such and such a time to bring you what I have collected from zakat. When Al-Harith collected the zakat from those who responded to him and the time approached that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) intended to send a message to him, the messenger detained him and did not come. Al-Harith felt that this might indicate some displeasure from Allah and His Messenger, so he called the chiefs of his people and said to them: "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) had appointed me a time to send his messenger to receive what was with me from zakat, and there is no failure from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny). I do not see his messenger's detention except as a displeasure that has arisen. So go, and we will go to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny)." And the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent Al-Walid ibn Uqbah to Al-Harith to take what he had collected from zakat. When Al-Walid had traveled part of the way, he became fearful and returned to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), saying: "O Messenger of Allah, Al-Harith has prevented me from zakat and wants to kill me." So the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) struck the group and prepared to send them to Al-Harith. Al-Harith, along with his companions, set out until he met the group as they faced them, separating from the city. Al-Harith approached them and said, "This is Al-Harith." When he drew near them, he asked, "To whom have you been sent?" They replied, "To you." He asked, "Why?" They said, "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent Al-Walid ibn Uqbah to you, and he claimed that you prevented him from zakat and intended to kill him." Al-Harith replied, "No, by the One who sent Muhammad with the truth, I did not see him at all, nor did he come to me." When Al-Harith entered upon the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), he said, "You prevented zakat and intended to kill my messenger." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) replied, "No, by the One who sent you with the truth, I did not see him, nor did he come to me. I only approached when my messenger was detained, fearing it might be a displeasure from Allah and His Messenger." Then, the verses of Al-Hujurat were revealed: {O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with a report, investigate...} (Al-Hujurat 49:6) to His statement: {And Allah is Knowing and Wise.} (Al-Hujurat 49:8).

- Muhammad ibn Sa'd al-Aufi narrated to us in what he wrote, saying: My father narrated to me, from my uncle, from his father, from his grandfather from Ibn Abbas, regarding his statement: {O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with a report, investigate, lest you harm a people in ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful} (Surah Al-Hujurat 49:6), he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) had sent Al-Walid ibn Uqbah ibn Abi Mu'it to Banu al-Mustalaq to collect alms from them. When the news reached them, they were delighted and came out to welcome the Messenger of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny). When Al-Walid heard that they were coming out to greet him, he returned to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and said: O Messenger of Allah, Banu al-Mustalaq have refused to give the alms. This greatly angered the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny). While he was contemplating attacking them, a man came to him and said: O Messenger of Allah, we were informed that your messenger returned from halfway, and we feared that his return was due to a letter that came to him from you in anger over our actions. We seek refuge in Allah from Your anger and the anger of Your Messenger. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) felt displeased with them, yet was still concerned for them. Then Allah, the Exalted and Almighty, revealed an excuse for them in the Book, saying: {O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with a report, investigate, lest you harm a people in ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful} (Surah Al-Hujurat 49:6).

- Abd al-Rahman narrated to us, saying: Al-Hajjaj ibn Hamzah al-Ajalli narrated to us, from Shababah, from Warkaa, from Ibn Abi Najih from Mujahid, regarding his statement: {O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with a report, verify it…} (Surah Al-Hujurat 49:6) that this referred to al-Walid ibn Uqbah. The Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent him to Banu al-Mustalaq to collect a tribute from them, but they received him with apprehension, so he returned to the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and said, "Indeed, Banu al-Mustalaq have gathered to fight you."
- Abd al-Rahman narrated to us, from my father, may Allah have mercy on him, from Hisham ibn Khalid al-Dimashqi, from Shu'ajb - meaning Ibn Ishaq - from Sa'id, namely Ibn Abi 'Ubaydah, from Qatadah, regarding Allah, the Exalted's statement: {O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with a report, verify it…} (Surah Al-Hujurat 49:6) that this was al-Walid ibn Uqbah ibn Abi Mu'ayt. The Prophet of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent him as a collector to Banu al-Mustalaq, but when they saw him, they approached him, and he feared them, so he returned to the Prophet of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and informed him that they had renounced Islam. Then the Prophet of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent Khalid ibn al-Walid and commanded him to verify the matter and not to be hasty. So Khalid went until he reached them at night and sent out his spies. When they came back, they informed Khalid that they were steadfast in Islam and that they had heard their adhan and seen their prayers. When morning came, Khalid went to them, saw what pleased him, and returned to the Prophet of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) to report the news. Then Allah, the Exalted, revealed what you hear.
- .... Abu Muhammad said: When al-Walid ibn Uqbah ibn Abi Mu'ayt informed the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) of the refusal of those he was sent to collect tribute from, and he accepted his report, it was due to his trust in al-Walid's honesty and his concealment of it, and his irritation with them because of this, while they were preparing to invade them, until the Quran was revealed to him: {O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with a report, verify it…} (Surah Al-Hujurat 49:6). He then refrained from them, indicating that the Sunnahs can be deemed authentic from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) through the transmission of sincere narrators.
