- .... His statement, exalted be He: {O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with a report, investigate… (Al-Hujurat 49:6)} This verse was revealed concerning Al-Walid ibn Uqbah ibn Abi Mu'it. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent him to the Banu Mustalaq as a collector of alms, and there was enmity between him and them from the days of ignorance. When the people heard of this, they went out to meet him in honor of Allah, the Exalted, and His Messenger. However, Satan instilled in him the thought that they wanted to kill him, so he feared them and returned from the road to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), saying: "The Banu Mustalaq have prevented their almsgivings and intend to kill me." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) became angry and intended to campaign against them. When the people heard of his return, they came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and said: "We heard of your messenger, so we went out to meet him, honor him, and deliver to him what we had received of the right of Allah, the Exalted. However, he has changed his mind about returning, and we fear that he has only turned back from the road due to a letter that has come to him from you in anger over our actions. We seek refuge in Allah from His anger and the anger of His Messenger." Then Allah, the Exalted, revealed: {O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with a report, investigate… (Al-Hujurat 49:6)}, meaning Al-Walid ibn Uqbah.

Al-Wahidi - Asbab al-Nuzul - Surah Al-Hujurat (49): 6
His statement, Almighty and Glorious be He: {O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with a report, investigate...}

760 - Al-Hakim Abu Abd Allah al-Shadhiyakhi narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Abd Allah ibn Zakariya al-Shaybani narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Daghuli narrated to us, saying: Sa'id ibn Mas'ud narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Sabq narrated to us, saying: Isa ibn Dinar narrated to us, saying: My father narrated to us that he heard Al-Harith ibn Dhurar say:
"I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), and he invited me to Islam, so I entered Islam and affirmed it. He then called me to zakat (charity), and I affirmed it. I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, allow me to return to my people and invite them to Islam and the obligation of zakat. Whoever responds to me, I will gather their zakat and send it to you, so you can receive what I have collected from the zakat.'"
When Al-Harith ibn Dhurar gathered and reached the place he intended to send to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) with his collected zakat, the messenger delayed on him and did not come to him. Al-Harith thought that this might indicate an anger from Allah and His Messenger. So he called the leaders of his people and said to them: "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) had indeed appointed me a time to send to me to collect the zakat that was with me, and there is no one from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) who delays or holds back his messenger except from displeasure. So go, and let us approach the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny)."
And the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent Al-Walid ibn Uqbah to Al-Harith to collect what he had from the gathered zakat. When Al-Walid set out and reached part of the way, he became afraid and returned, saying: "O Messenger of Allah, Al-Harith has withheld the zakat from me and intends to kill me." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) struck the camp and turned away from Al-Harith with his companions, and Al-Harith met the camp as it was departing the city. He confronted them and said: "This is Al-Harith." When he drew near them, he asked, "To whom were you sent?" They said, "To you." He asked, "Why?" They replied, "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent Al-Walid ibn Uqbah to you, but he returned and claimed that you withheld the zakat from him and intended to kill him." Al-Harith said: "By the one who sent Muhammad with the truth, I did not see him, nor did he come to me."
When Al-Harith entered upon the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), he said: "Did you withhold the zakat and intend to kill my messenger?" Al-Harith replied: "No, by the one who sent you! I did not see your messenger, nor did he come to me. I only approached when your messenger delayed on me, fearing that it might be displeasure from Allah and His Messenger."
Then the following was revealed in Surah Al-Hujurat: {O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with a report, investigate, lest you injure a people in ignorance and, afterward, become regretful for what you have done} (Al-Hujurat 49:6) to His statement, the Exalted: {a favor from Allah and a bounty, and Allah is Knowing and Wise} (Al-Hujurat 49:8).
