His statement, exalted be He: {O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with a report, investigate (al-Hujurat 49:6)}
This verse was revealed concerning al-Walid ibn Uqbah ibn Abi Mu'īt. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent him to Banu al-Mustaliq after the incident as a collector of alms, and there was enmity between him and them from the Days of Ignorance. When the people heard of him, they went out to meet him in respect for the command of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny). Then, Satan instigated him that they intended to kill him, so he feared them and returned from the road to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and said, "Indeed, Banu al-Mustaliq have withheld their alms from me and intend to kill me." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) became angry and was about to march against them. When the people learned of his return, they went to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and said, "O Messenger of Allah, we heard of your messenger, so we set out to meet him and honor him, and to give him what we had received of the right of Allah, exalted be He. However, he seemed to change his mind and return, and we fear that he is only being turned back from the road by a message that has come to him from you out of anger at us, and we seek refuge with Allah from His anger and the anger of His Messenger." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) suspected them and sent Khalid ibn al-Walid to them secretly with an army, commanding him to conceal his arrival from his people. He said to him, "Observe; if you see anything from them that indicates their faith, take from them the alms of their wealth. If you do not see that, then act towards them as you would act towards the disbelievers." Khalid did this and confronted them, hearing their calls to prayer for the Maghrib and Isha prayers. He took their alms from them and saw nothing but obedience and good from them, so he returned to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and informed him of the news. Then Allah, exalted be He, revealed: {O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with a report, investigate (al-Hujurat 49:6)},
meaning al-Walid ibn Uqbah.
