Al-Tabari - Tafsir al-Tabari = Jami' al-Bayan 'an Ta'wil Ayae al-Quran - Surah As-Sajdah (32): 18
Volume: (18) - Page Number: (624)
- Commentary: On the interpretation of His, Almighty, verse: {So is one who is a believer like one who is a transgressor? They are not equal} (Surah As-Sajdah 32:18). He Almighty says: Is this disbeliever, who denies the promise of Allah and His warning, opposing Allah's command and prohibition, like this believer in Allah, who trusts in His promise and warning, and obeys Him in His commands and prohibitions? No, they are not equal in the sight of Allah. He says: The disbelievers and the believers will not be equal to Him in what He does with them on the Day of Resurrection. And He said they will not be equal, thus gathering, although He only mentioned two before that: a believer and a transgressor, because He did not mean by the believer a single believer or by the transgressor a single transgressor, but rather all transgressors and all believers in Allah. Therefore, if the two are not meant to be treated as equal, the Arabs can use them in a collective sense. And it is mentioned that this verse was revealed concerning Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) and al-Walid ibn Uqbah.

- Mention of those who said that: Ibn Humayd said: Salamah ibn al-Fadl narrated to us, from Ibn Ishaq, from some of his companions from Ata ibn Yasar, who said: "This was revealed in Medina concerning Ali ibn Abi Talib and al-Walid ibn Uqbah ibn Abi Mu'it." There was some exchange between al-Walid and Ali, and al-Walid ibn Uqbah said, "I am more eloquent than you and have a better grasp of weapons, and I can stand my ground against you." Ali replied, "Be silent, for you are wicked," and Allah then revealed about them: { "Is one who is a believer like one who is a transgressor? They do not equal each other" } (As-Sajdah 32:18) to the verse: { "with it you deny" } (As-Sajdah 32:20).

Al-Tabari - Tafsir al-Tabari = Jami' al-Bayan 'an Ta'wil Ayae al-Qur'an - Surah Al-Hujurat (49): 6
Volume: (21) - Page Number: (350)
- Muhammad ibn Sa'd narrated to me, saying: My father narrated to me, from his father, saying: My uncle narrated to me, from his father, saying: My father narrated to me from his father about Ibn Abbas with regard to his statement: {O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with a report, investigate, lest you harm a people in ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful} (Al-Hujurat 49:6).... He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) had sent Al-Walid ibn Uqbah ibn Abi Mu'it, one of the Banu Amr ibn Umayyah, and one of the Banu Abi Mu'it, to Banu al-Mustaliq to collect alms from them. When he arrived, they were pleased and went out to receive the Messenger of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny). When Al-Walid was informed that they had come out to meet him, he returned to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and said: O Messenger of Allah, indeed Banu al-Mustaliq have withheld the alms. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) became very angry. While he was considering himself to invade them, the delegation came to him and said: O Messenger of Allah, we have been informed that your messenger returned from halfway and we were afraid that he was only turned back by a letter that came to him from you due to your anger towards us. We seek refuge in Allah from His anger and the anger of His Messenger. Then Allah sent down their excuse in the Book, saying: {O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with a report, investigate, lest you harm a people in ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful} (Al-Hujurat 49:6).

- Muhammad ibn Amr narrated to me, saying: Abu Asim narrated to us, saying: Isa narrated to us. And Al-Harith narrated to me, saying: Al-Hasan narrated to us, saying: Warkaa narrated to us, all of them together from Ibn Abi Najih from Mujahid regarding His statement: {O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with a report, investigate (Al-Hujurat 49:6)} who said: This was Al-Walid ibn Uqbah ibn Abi Mu'it. The Prophet of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent him to Banu al-Mustaliq to collect their alms, and they received him with a gift and he returned to Muhammad (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and said: Indeed, Banu al-Mustaliq have gathered to fight you.

- Al-Tabari narrated to us, saying: Bashar narrated to us, from Yazid, who said: Sa'id narrated to us from Qatadah, concerning His statement: {O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with a report, investigate (Al-Hujurat 49:6)} .... until he reached: {in ignorance (Al-Hujurat 49:6)} and that was concerning Ibn Abi Mu'ayt and the son of Uqbah, al-Walid. The Prophet of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent him to the Banu al-Mustaliq as a confirmer. When they saw him, they approached him, and he feared them, so he returned to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and informed him that they had reverted from Islam. Then the Prophet of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent Khalid ibn al-Walid and ordered him to be cautious and not to rush. So he went until he reached them at night and sent out his spies. When they returned, they informed Khalid that they were firmly adhering to Islam and that they had heard their calls to prayer and seen their prayers. When morning came, Khalid went to them and saw what pleased him, so he returned to the Prophet of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and informed him of the news, and Allah, the Exalted, revealed what you hear. Thus, the Prophet of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) would say: "Verification is from Allah, and haste is from Satan." Ibn Abdal-A'la narrated to us, saying: Ibn Thawr narrated to us, from Ma'mar from Qatadah, regarding His statement: {O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with a report, investigate (Al-Hujurat 49:6)} and mentioned something similar.

- He said: Salamah narrated to us, who said: Muhammad ibn Ishaq narrated to us from Yazid ibn Rumaan that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent al-Walid ibn Ubayd to the Banu al-Mustaliq after their Islam. When they heard of him, they rode out to him. When he heard of them, he feared them and returned to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and informed him that the people intended to kill him and were preventing what they owed him in alms. The Muslims began to speak extensively about their invasion until the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) intended to invade them. Meanwhile, while they were in this situation, their delegation arrived before the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and said, "O Messenger of Allah, we heard about your messenger when you sent him to us, and we set out to honor him and to give him what we owed in alms. He turned back, and it reached us that he claims to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) that we set out to fight him. By Allah, we did not set out for that purpose." Then Allah revealed regarding al-Walid ibn Uqbah and them: {O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with a report, investigate... } (Surah Al-Hujurat 49:6).... the verse.
