17975 - As for his sending of al-Walid as a tax collector, it has been narrated to us by Muhammad ibn Abdullah al-Hafiz, who said: Ahmad ibn Kamil al-Qadi narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Sa'd al-‘Ufyi told me, from my father, Sa'd ibn Muhammad ibn al-Hasan ibn Atiyya, from my uncle, al-Husayn ibn al-Hasan ibn Atiyya, from my father, from my grandfather, Atiyya ibn Sa'd,
from Ibn Abbas, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent al-Walid ibn Uqbah ibn Abi Mu'ayt to Banu al-Mustalaq to collect alms from them. When they received the news, they were delighted and went out to welcome the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny). When al-Walid heard that they were coming out to greet him, he returned to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and said: O Messenger of Allah, Banu al-Mustalaq have refused to give alms. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) was greatly angry at this. While he was considering in himself that he might invade them, the delegation came to him and said: O Messenger of Allah, we have heard that your messenger returned from halfway, and we feared that he was only turned back by a letter that came to him from you due to your anger at us. We seek refuge in Allah from the anger of Allah and the anger of His Messenger. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sought to make them feel understood, and he was pleased with them. Then Allah, the Mighty and Exalted, revealed their excuse in the Book, saying:{O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with a report, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and then become, over what you have done, regretful}(Surah Al-Hujurat 49:6).
