- .... Among them is His statement, exalted be He: {Is then one who believes equal to one who is sinful? They are not equal} (Surah Sajdah 32:18). Ibn Abbas said: This was revealed about Ali ibn Abi Talib and al-Walid ibn Uqbah ibn Abi Mu'it. And it is reported that al-Walid said to Ali: "I am one of you in age and more fluent of tongue." Ali replied to him: "Be silent; you are nothing but a sinful one speaking lies." Then Allah revealed this as a confirmation of Ali. Qatadah said: "No, by Allah, they were not equal in this world or the Hereafter." It was narrated by al-Wahidi.

- .... As for you, O Walid, by Allah, I do not blame you for harboring hatred towards Ali, for he flogged you eighty times for drinking alcohol and killed your father before the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) in cold blood. And you are the one whom Allah called the evildoer and named Ali the believer, while you both bragged, and you said to him: "Be silent, O Ali, for we are more courageous than you in heart and have a longer tongue than you." Ali replied to you: "Be silent, O Walid, for I am a believer, and you are an evildoer." Then Allah, the Exalted, revealed in agreement with his words::{ Is one who is a believer, like one who is a transgressor? They are not equal } (Surah Sajdah 32:18).
