- Abu Mansur Abdul Rahman ibn Muhammad ibn Abdul Wahid narrated to us, saying: Abu Bakr al-Khatib narrated to us, saying: Al-Walid ibn Uqbah ibn Abi Mu'ayt ibn Amr ibn Umayyah ibn Abd Shams ibn Manaf, Abu Wahb, was the maternal half-brother of Uthman ibn Affan. He met and saw the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) when he was a small child. His father was one of the devils of Quraysh. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) captured him on the Day of Badr and struck his neck. And he is the transgressor (fāsiq) that Allah mentioned in His Book, meaning with His words: { Is one who is a believer like one who is a transgressor? They are not equal } (Surah Sajdah 32:18).

- Abu al-Qasim ibn al-Husayn narrated to us, saying: Abu Ali ibn al-Madhhab narrated to us, saying: Ahmad ibn Ja'far narrated to us, saying: Abdullah ibn Ahmad narrated to me, saying: My father narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Sabq narrated to us, saying: Isa ibn Dinar narrated to me, saying: My father told me that he heard al-Harith ibn Dharar al-Khuza'i say: I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), and he called me to Islam, so I entered it and confirmed it. He then called me to zakat (almsgiving), and I affirmed it, saying, "O Messenger of Allah, return to my people and invite them to Islam and the performance of zakat. Whoever responds to me, I will gather their zakat, and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) will send you a messenger on such and such a specified day to receive what I have gathered from zakat." When al-Harith gathered the zakat from those who responded to him, and the time approached that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) intended to send to him, the messenger delayed and did not come to him. Al-Harith thought that this indicated some displeasure from Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, and His Messenger (peace be upon him and his holy progeny). So he called the leading men of his people and said to them: "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) set me a time to send his messenger to receive the zakat I had, and it is not in the nature of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) to go back on his word. I do not see the delay of his messenger except as a sign of His displeasure." So go, and we will go to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny)." And the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent Al-Walid ibn Uqbah to al-Harith to receive what he had gathered from zakat. However, when Al-Walid traveled and reached partway, he became frightened and returned, coming to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny). He said: "O Messenger of Allah, al-Harith prevented me from the zakat and intended to kill me." So the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) struck out against al-Harith, and al-Harith was returning with his companions when he met the contingent and was now outside the city. Al-Harith encountered them, and they said, "This is al-Harith." When he approached them, he said: "Who are you that you were sent?" They said: "To you." He asked: "Why?" They replied: "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent Al-Walid ibn Uqbah to you." He claimed that you prevented him from the zakat and intended to kill him." Al-Harith replied: "No, by the One who sent Muhammad with the truth, I neither saw him nor did he come to me." When Al-Harith entered the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), he said: "You prevented the zakat and intended to kill my messenger." Al-Harith replied: "No, by the One who sent you with the truth, I neither saw him nor did he come to me, and I only approached when the messenger of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) delayed on me," fearing that it was a sign of his displeasure from Allah." Then Surah Al-Hujurat was revealed: {O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with a report, investigate, lest you inflict harm upon a people in ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful} (Al-Hujurat 49:6) up to this point: {A bounty from Allah and a blessing, and Allah is Knowing and Wise} (Al-Hujurat 49:8).

- And Abu al-Fath Yusuf ibn Abd al-Wahid narrated to us, saying: Shu'ja ibn Ali narrated to us, saying: Abu Abd Allah ibn Mundah narrated to us, saying: Isma'il ibn Ya'qub al-Baghdadi in Egypt narrated to us, saying: Ja'far ibn Muhammad ibn Shakir narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Sabiq narrated to us, saying: 'Isa ibn Dinar narrated to me, from my father, that he heard al-Harith ibn Abi Dhirar say: "I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), and he called me to Islam, so I entered into Islam and acknowledged it. He called me to Zakat, and I confirmed it. I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, return to my people and invite them to Islam and the payment of Zakat. Those who respond, I will gather their Zakat, and you can send me an appointed time, O Messenger of Allah, to come to you with what I have collected of Zakat.' When al-Harith gathered from those who responded to him and the appointed time that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) wanted to send to him arrived, the messenger задержался, and did not come to him. Al-Harith thought that this was because something had changed in the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and that it must be his displeasure with him. He then called the leaders of his people and said to them: 'The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) had set a time for me to send his messenger to take what I had of Zakat, and there is no ignoring (or backing out) from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny). I do not see his messenger delayed except for it being from his displeasure.' So go, and let us go to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny).' And the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent al-Walid ibn Uqbah to al-Harith to take what he had collected from Zakat. When al-Walid set out and reached part of the way, he became frightened and returned. He came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and said: "O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), al-Harith refused to give me the Zakat and wanted to kill me." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) struck out (to send) a group to al-Harith, and al-Harith was returning with his companions when he met the group as they approached. When he overshadowed them, he said: "Who have you sent?" They replied: "To you." He said: "Why?" They said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) had sent al-Walid ibn Uqbah to you, but he returned to him and claimed that you refused him the Zakat and wanted to kill him." He said: "No, by the One who sent Muhammad with the truth, I did not see him, nor did he come to me." When al-Harith entered upon the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said to him: "You refused the Zakat and wanted to kill my messenger?" He replied: "No, by the One who sent you with the truth, I did not see him, nor did he come to me. I only approached when your messenger was delayed, fearing that this was a sign of your displeasure with me from Allah and your messenger." Then the verses descended in Surah al-Hujurat: {O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disreputable person with a report, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful} (Surah al-Hujurat 49:6) to the verse: {A bounty from Allah and a favor, and Allah is Knowing and Wise} (Surah al-Hujurat 49:8).

- Al-Bukhari narrated to us, saying: Abu al-Qasim Zahir ibn Tahir al-Mustamli narrated to us, saying: Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn al-Husayn al-Hafiz narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Abdullah al-Hafiz narrated to us, saying: Ahmad ibn Kamil al-Qadi narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Sa'd al-Awfi, who said: My father, Sa'd ibn Muhammad ibn al-Hasan ibn Atiya, narrated to me, from my father, from my grandfather Atiya ibn Sa'd, from Ibn Abbas, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) had sent Al-Walid ibn Uqbah ibn Abi Mu'ayt to Banu al-Mustalaq to take zakat (charitable almsgiving) from them. When he came to them, they were overjoyed and went out to meet the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny). When Al-Walid heard that they were coming out to meet him, he returned to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and said: O Messenger of Allah, Banu al-Mustalaq have withheld the zakat. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) was extremely angry about this. While he was pondering within himself the idea of going to fight them, a delegation came to him and said: O Messenger of Allah, we have been told that your messenger returned from halfway and we feared that he was only stopped by a message from you or by your anger at us. We seek refuge in Allah from the anger of Allah and the anger of His Messenger. And the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sought to make them understand, and he was concerned for them. Then Allah revealed a warning to them in the Qur'an, saying: {O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with a report, investigate, lest you affect a people in ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful} (Surah Al-Hujurat 49:6).
- Al-Fatih narrated to us, saying: Abu al-Fath Yusuf ibn Abdul Wahid narrated to us, saying: Shuja ibn Ali narrated to us, saying: Abu Abdullah ibn Mundah narrated to us, saying: Al-Husayn ibn al-Hasan ibn Ayub al-Tusi narrated to us, from Abu Yahya Abdullah ibn Ahmad ibn Maysarah, who said: Ya'qub ibn Muhammad al-Zuhri narrated to us, from Isa ibn al-Husayin ibn Kulthum ibn Alqamah ibn Najiyah al-Khuza'i, from the grandmother of Kulthum ibn Alqamah, from his father, that he was in the delegation of Banu al-Mustalaq when they came to the Messenger (peace be upon him and his holy progeny). He said: And the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent Al-Walid ibn Uqbah ibn Abi Mu'ayt to us to receive our charitable contributions until, when he was close to us, after the Battle of al-Muraysi'a, he returned, and they rode in pursuit of him. He said: We were transporting a portion of our zakat and arrived, saying: O Prophet of Allah, I came to a people who, in their ignorance, renewed fighting and withheld zakat. This did not please the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) until Allah, the Exalted, revealed: {O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with a report, investigate} (Surah Al-Hujurat 49:6).

- Abu al-Fadl Muhammad ibn Isma'il ibn al-Fadl al-Fudayli narrated to us, saying: Abu al-Qasim Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Muhammad al-Khalili narrated to us, saying: Abu al-Qasim Ali ibn Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Khuzai narrated to us, saying: Abu Sa'id al-Haytham ibn Kulayb al-Shashi narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Ali Abu Ja'far al-Warraq narrated to us, saying: Bay'qub ibn Kasib Abu Yusuf al-Makki narrated to us, saying: Isa ibn al-Hadrami narrated to us from his grandfather, from his father Alqamah, who said: The Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent Al-Walid ibn Uqbah ibn Abi Mu'ayt to us to collect zakat (charitable alms) on our wealth. He traveled until he was close to us, and this was after the Battle of al-Marisiya', but he turned back. So we mounted in pursuit of him and drove a group of our zakat towards him, seeking him with it and with provisions they were carrying. He arrived before them and came to the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), and said: O Messenger of Allah, I came to a people who were fervent in battle during their ignorance and were preventing zakat. Yet neither this changed the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) until a revelation descended upon him: {O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disreputable person with a report, investigate, lest you harm a people in ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful} (Quran 49:6).

He said: Yazid ibn Rumayan narrated to me, saying: When almsgiving (sadaqah) became due on Banu al-Mustalaq, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent someone to them, a man, to give them alms. When they heard of him, they mounted to meet him. He was a cowardly man, and he assumed they intended to kill him, so he went out fleeing until he reached the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny). He said: O Messenger, they prevented me from what was offered to them and intended to kill me. The Messenger said: Muslims, O Messenger of Allah, are they (the Banu al-Mustalaq)? Send us out to them so we can eradicate them. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) replied: Do not rush until you wait to see whether what has reached you is true or false. Before long, their delegation came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and said: O Messenger of Allah, we heard of your commander whom you sent to us to give us alms. We set out to meet him to honor him and fulfill our obligation of almsgiving to him, but he continued to flee. We learned that he is telling you we intended to kill him, and that we prevented him from what was offered to us in alms. Upon him, Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, revealed: {O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with a report, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and then become, over what you have done, regretful} (Surah Al-Hujurat 49:6) to his statement, {Those who do so are the truly guided} (Surah Al-Hujurat 49:7).

He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent al-Walid ibn Uqbah to Banu al-Mustalaq, and when al-Walid approached them, they went out to meet him, but he fled from them. He returned to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and said: They have returned (to their previous disbelief). The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent Khalid ibn al-Walid to them. When Khalid drew near, they sent out spies at night, and they were found to be calling out and praying. Khalid went to them and saw nothing but obedience and goodness among them, so he returned to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and informed him.
- Abu al-Qasim al-Shahhami narrated to us, saying: Abu Bakr al-Bayhaqi narrated to us, Abu Abd Allah al-Hafiz narrated to us, Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Hasan al-Qadi narrated to us, Ibrahim ibn al-Husayn narrated to us, Adam narrated to us, Warqah narrated to us from Ibn Abi Najih,

He returned to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and said to him: Indeed, Banu al-Mustalaq have gathered to fight you. Then Allah, blessed and exalted be He, revealed: {O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with a report, investigate} (Surah Al-Hujurat 49:6) the verse.
