996 - His statement: It is narrated that a dispute occurred between Ali ibn Abi Talib and al-Walid ibn Uqbah ibn Abi Mu'it on the day of Badr, in which al-Walid said to him, "Be silent, for you are a boy. I am younger than you in age, stronger than you in strength, more fluent than you in speech, better armed than you, braver than you in spirit, and more substantial than you in presence among the troops." Ali replied to him, "Be silent, for you are a wicked man," and then it was revealed::{ Is one who is a believer, like one who is a transgressor? They are not equal. } (Surah al-Sajdah 32:18)
- Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Isbahani narrated to us, saying: Abdullah ibn Muhammad al-Hafiz narrated to us, saying: Ishaq ibn Bayan narrated to us, saying: Habish ibn Mubashshir al-Faqih narrated to us, saying: Ubaydullah ibn Musa narrated to us, saying: Ibn Abi Layla narrated to us, from al-Hakam, from Sa'id ibn Jubair
from Ibn Abbas, who said: Al-Walid ibn Uqbah ibn Abi Mu'it said to Ali ibn Abi Talib, "I am better armed than you, more vigorous in speech than you, and more substantial in presence among the troops than you." Ali replied, "Be silent, O wicked one, for you are nothing but a transgressor," and then it was revealed::{ Is one who is a believer, like one who is a transgressor? They are not equal. } (Surah al-Sajdah 32:18) He meant by the believer, Ali, and by the transgressor, Al-Walid ibn Uqbah. Ibn Marduyah also narrated this in his Tafsir, saying: Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Ibrahim narrated to us, saying: Ishaq ibn Bayan narrated to us the same, and he also narrated it from Ali ibn Mandil, from al-Kalbi, from Abu Salih, from Ibn Abbas, mentioning it.

1229 - Hadith Ten: It is narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent al-Waleed ibn Uqbah, the maternal brother of Uthman, who was appointed by Uthman as the governor of Kufa after Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas, to lead the people in the Fajr prayer. He prayed four rak'ahs while drunk and then said, "Shall I offer you more?" Uthman then relieved him of his duties and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent him as a tax collector to the Banu al-Mustafaa. There was enmity between them and him, and when he neared their lands, they rode out to meet him, thinking he presumed them to be fighters, so he returned and said to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), "They have apostatized and are refusing to pay zakat." He then went back and they said, "We seek refuge in Allah from His anger and the anger of His Messenger," and they accused him. Uthman said, "You must put an end to this, or I will send to you a man who is like myself to fight your battles and take your families as captives," and then he struck his hand on the shoulder of Ali (peace be upon him). It is also said that he sent Khalid ibn al-Walid to them, and he found them calling to prayer and engaged in night prayers. They surrendered the alms to him, and he returned.
- I say: Ibn Rahwayh narrated it in his Musnad, and al-Tabarani in his Mu'jam from the hadith of Musa ibn Ubaydah al-Rubdhi, from Thabit, the freed slave of Umm Salamah, from Umm Salamah, that the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent al-Waleed ibn Uqbah to the Banu al-Mustalaq after the incident to take their charity contributions. When they heard this, a group of them went out to meet him. He thought they were coming to fight him, so he returned to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and said, "O Messenger of Allah, the Banu al-Mustalaq are refusing to give me their charity." When they heard of his return, they came until they arrived in Medina and prayed behind him in the rows. When he finished, they said, "We seek refuge in Allah from His anger and the anger of His Messenger: O Messenger of Allah, it was mentioned to us that you sent a man to us to collect our funds, and we were pleased with this and our hearts were settled. Then we heard that he returned, and we feared it might be that he mentioned it in displeasure from Allah or His Messenger." She said, "They continued to make excuses to him until the verse was revealed concerning them": {O you who have faith! If a transgressor brings you news, verify it...} (Surah Al-Hujuraat 49:6) Al-Tabarani's account ends here.

- Ahmad narrated it in his Musnad and al-Tabarani in his Mu'jam, saying: Muhammad ibn Saabiq narrated to us, saying: Isa ibn Dinar narrated to us, from his father, that he heard al-Harith ibn Dhurar al-Khuza'i say: I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), and he called me to Islam, so I entered it. He then called me to zakat, and I said: O Messenger of Allah, return to my people and invite them to Islam and the giving of zakat, and send me a messenger after a certain time to receive what I have collected of zakat. When the appointed time arrived that was between him and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), the messenger did not come to him. He thought that this indicated some anger from Allah or His Messenger. So he called the leaders of his people and informed them of this, saying: Go with us to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny). When they were still some way down the road, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent al-Walid ibn Uqbah to collect what was with him. When he saw them, he became frightened and returned, and went to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and said: O Messenger of Allah, al-Harith said, 'To whom did you send them?' He replied: 'To you.' When he entered the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), he said: Are you withholding zakat and intending to kill my messenger? He said: No, by the One who sent you with the truth, I neither saw him nor did he see me. But when your messenger was delayed, I feared it might be a displeasure from Allah and His Messenger.' Then the verse {O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with a report, verify it... (Surah al-Hujurat 49:6)} was revealed.

- And al-Bayhaqi narrated it in Dalail al-Nubuwwah, and al-Nasa'i in his al-Sunan al-Kubra, and Ibn Rahuyah in his Musnad, and they said in it: "He had prayed the Fajr (morning) prayer four rak'ahs, so let it be looked into." Ibn Marduyah also narrated it in his Tafsir, and the two mentioned hadiths from al-Tabarani have their chain and text in both of them. It was also narrated from the hadith of Abdullah ibn Abd al-Quddus, from al-A'mash, from Musa ibn al-Musayyab, from Salim ibn Abi al-Ja'd, from Jabir ibn Abdullah, who said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent al-Walid ibn Uqbah to Banu Wali'ah, and there had been animosity between them in the days of ignorance (Jahiliyyah). When they approached him, he feared (them) and returned to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), and said: 'Indeed, Banu Wali'ah have prevented me from the zakat (almsgiving) and wanted to kill me.' When this reached them, they came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and lied, saying: 'There is animosity between us and him.' He (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) replied: 'You will put an end to this, or I will send you a man who will fight your battles and take your children as captives. It is this,' and he struck his hand on the shoulder of Ali (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) while this was happening." {O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with a report, investigate (Surah Al-Hujurat 49:6)}.
