Al-Walid ibn Uqbah and Banu al-Mustaliq, and what was revealed about that in the Quran

- .... Ibn Ishaq said and Yazid ibn Rumayan narrated to me that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent Al-Walid ibn Uqbah ibn Abi Mu'ayt to them after their Islam. When they heard of him, they mounted to go to him. But when he heard of them, he feared them and returned to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), informing him that the people intended to kill him and would not give him what they had previously accepted from him in charity. The Muslims spoke extensively about an expedition against them until the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) considered launching an attack on them. While they were in this state, their delegation came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and said, "O Messenger of Allah, we heard about your messenger when you sent him to us, so we set out to honor him and to give him what we had previously accepted from him in charity. But he turned back, and we learned that he claimed to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) that we went out to kill him, and by Allah, we did not come for that." Then Allah, the Exalted, revealed regarding him and them: {O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with a report, investigate, lest you harm a people in ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful} (Surah Al-Hujurat 49:6).

- .... So the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) returned to them the captives and the spoils Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent al-Walid ibn Uqbah ibn Abi Mu'it to Banu al-Mustalaq of Khuza'ah to confirm (their faith) for them, as they had embraced Islam and built mosques. When they heard of al-Walid's approach, twenty men from them came out to meet him with a camel and sheep, rejoicing at his arrival. But when he saw them, he turned and fled back to Medina. He informed the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) that they had greeted him with weapons, trying to prevent him from the charity. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) intended to send someone to fight them. When this reached the people, a group of those who had met al-Walid came to him and informed the Prophet of the incident as it had happened. Then this verse was revealed: {O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with a report, investigate, lest you harm a people in ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful} (Surah al-Hujurat 49:6) to the end of the verse.

Volume: (3) - Page Number: (220)
2929 - Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us from Ma'mar from Qatadah regarding Allah's statement, the Mighty and Majestic be He: {O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with a report, investigate it...} (Al-Hujurat 49:6), who said: The Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent al-Walid ibn Uqbah to Banu al-Mustalaq, and al-Walid ibn Uqbah came to them, and they went out to meet him. He scattered them, so he returned to the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and said: "They have turned back." The Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent Khalid ibn al-Walid to them. When Khalid drew near to them, he sent out spies at night, and they saw that they were praying and calling out. Khalid came to them and saw nothing from them except obedience and good, so he returned to the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and informed him.

- .... There is no disagreement among the people of knowledge regarding the interpretation of the Quran as far as I know that His statement, Exalted and Mighty be He: {O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with a report, investigate (Surah Al-Hujurat 49:6)} was revealed concerning al-Walid ibn Uqbah. This was because the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent him as a collector to the Banu al-Mustalaq, but he returned and reported that they had apostasized and were withholding alms. This was because they came out to meet him, and he feared them, so he turned back from them. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) then sent Khalid ibn al-Walid to them, and he informed him that they were firmly adhering to Islam, and {O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with a report, investigate (Surah Al-Hujurat 49:6)} was revealed.

- Narrated to us by Abi Ya'la, who said: Ibrahim ibn al-Hajjaj narrated to us, from Hammad ibn Salamah, from al-Kalbi, from Abu Salih from Ibn Abbas that al-Walid ibn Uqbah said to Ali ibn Abi Talib: "I am more eloquent than you, have a better spear than you, and am bigger than you in body in the battalion." Ali replied to him, "Be silent, for you are a wicked man." Then Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed: { "Is one who is a believer equal to one who is a transgressor? They are not equal" } (Surah Sajdah 32:18), meaning Ali and al-Walid, the transgressor.

- al-Walid ibn Uqbah (r), Abu al-Yaqzan said: He was al-Walid ibn Uqbah ibn Abi Mu'ayt ibn Abi Amr ibn Umayya ibn Abd Shams. Abu Amr was a slave named Dhakwan, and Umayya claimed him as his own, giving him the kunya (nickname) Abu Amr. He took as his wife Umayya's woman, Amna bint Aban, the mother of the al-A'yas. Al-Walid was known by the kunya Abu Wahb and was the maternal half-brother of Uthman ibn Affan, through their mother Arwa bint Kurayz. He embraced Islam on the day of the Conquest of Mecca and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) appointed him as a tax collector (sadaqah) to the Banu al-Mustalaq. When he arrived, they said to him, "They are withholding the charity from me," but he was lying. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) commanded that weapons be taken to them, and Allah, the Exalted, revealed to him: {O you who have believed, if there comes to you a dissolute one with a report, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and then become, over what you have done, regretful} (Surah Al-Hujurat 49:6). A conflict arose between him and Ali ibn Abi Talib, and he said: "I will strike the dissolute one with the sword and strike the head of the battle hero who is mocking you." Then Allah, the Exalted, revealed: {And is one who is a believer like one who is a transgressor? They are not equal} (Surah Sajdah 32:18).

306 - And His statement, Glorified and Exalted be He: {Is then one who believes equal to one who is sinful? They are not equal} (Al-Sajdah 32:18). Abu Amr ibn al-Ala' narrated from Mujahid from Ibn Abbas, who said: This was revealed about two men from Quraish, continuing to the end of the three verses. Ibn Abi Layla said it was revealed about Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and a man from Quraish. Others stated it was about Ali (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and al-Walid ibn Uqbah ibn Abi Mu'it. Thus, Allah, Glorified and Exalted be He, bore witness to Ali ibn Abi Talib's faith and that he is in Paradise.

- .... Allah, the Almighty, said: {O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with a report, investigate (al-Hujurāt 49:6)} The people of tafsir said: This verse was revealed concerning al-Walid ibn Uqbah ibn Mu'it. The Messenger of Allah sent him to Banu al-Musta'liq of Khuzā'a to collect their alms, and there was animosity between him and them from the days of ignorance. When his arrival among them drew near and they heard of his approach, they came out to meet him to honor him, but he feared them and returned. He said to the Messenger: of Allah, "O Messenger of Allah, they are withholding the zakat." In another narration, he said, "They have renounced Islam and will not give anything." So the Prophet sent Khalid ibn al-Walid with a military detachment to them and instructed him to ascertain their situation. If it was as al-Walid said, he was to fight them." Khalid went and came to them at night. He heard the sound of callers to prayer among them and heard the recitation of the Qur'an, so he returned and informed the Prophet. Then Allah, the Exalted, revealed this verse.....

- .... Allah, the Almighty, said: {O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disbeliever with a report, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and then become, over what you have done, regretful} (Al-Hujurat 49:6). In it are five issues. The first issue is the reason for its revelation: It is narrated that the Prophet sent al-Walid ibn Uqbah as a collector to Banu al-Mustalaq. When they saw him, they approached him, but he felt apprehensive of them and returned to the Prophet, informing him that they had reverted from Islam. The Prophet then sent Khalid ibn al-Walid and instructed him to ascertain the matter and not to rush. Khalid went until he reached them at night and sent spies. When they returned, they informed Khalid that they were firmly adhering to Islam and he heard their call to prayer and saw their prayers. When Khalid went to them and saw the truth of what they had reported, he returned to the Prophet and informed him, and this verse was revealed.

- .... Allah, the Almighty, said: {O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with a report, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and then become, over what you have done, regretful} (Al-Hujuraat 49:6). This noble verse was revealed concerning al-Walid ibn Uqbah ibn Abi Mu'ayt. The Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) had sent him to the Banu al-Mustalaq of Khazaa'ah to bring back their charitable contributions. When they heard of his arrival, they came out to meet him, rejoicing. However, he feared them and thought they intended to kill him, so he returned to the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and claimed that they had withheld the charity and wanted to kill him. A delegation from them later came to the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and informed him of al-Walid's lies, so Allah revealed this verse.
