Companion al-Waleed Ibn Uqba mocks the prayers

Hadith No: 1

Hudhain b. al-Mundhir Abu Sasan reported:

I saw that Walid was brought to Uthmin b. 'Affan as he had prayed two rak'ahs of the dawn prayer, and then he said: I make an increase for you. And two men bore witness against him. One of them was Humran who said that he had drunk wine. The second one gave witness that he had seen him vomiting. Uthman said: He would not have vomited (wine) unless he had drunk it. He said: 'Ali, stand up and lash him. 'Ali said: Hasan, stand up and lash him. Thereupon Hasan said: Let him suffer the heat (of Caliphate) who has enjoyed its coolness. ('Ali felt annoyed at this remark) and he said: 'Abdullah b. Ja'far, stand up and flog him, and he began to flog him and 'Ali counted the stripes until these were forty. He (Hazrat 'Ali) said: Stop now, and then said: Allah's Apostle (S) gave forty stripes, and Abu Bakr also gave forty stripes, and Umar gave eighty stripes, and all these fall under the category of the Sunnab, but this one (forty stripes) is dearer to me.

- .... Mus'ab al-Zubayri said: "He was one of the men of Quraysh and their notables, and the story of him leading the people in the Fajr prayer four rak'ahs while drunk is well-known and recorded. The story of his dismissal after he was found to have been drinking alcohol is also well-known and recorded in both Sahihs." Uthman dismissed him from Kufa after flogging him.

1230 - Yazid ibn Harun narrated to us, saying: Sa'id ibn Abi 'Arabah narrated to us, from Abdullah al-Danaj, from Hudhayn ibn al-Mundhir ibn al-Harith ibn Wailah, that al-Walid ibn Uqbah led the people in the Fajr prayer four rak'ahs, then turned to them and said: "Should I add more?" This was reported to Uthman, and he ordered that he be lashed. Then Ali said to al-Hasan ibn Ali: "Stand up, O Hasan, and lash him." Al-Hasan replied, "What are you doing in that?" Ali said, "Rather, you have become incapable and weak." Then Ali said, "Stand up, O Abdullah ibn Ja'far, and lash him." So Abdullah ibn Ja'far stood and lashed him, while Ali was counting. When he reached forty, he said to him: "Stop." Then he said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) struck (or lashed) in cases of intoxicants forty, Abu Bakr struck forty, and Umar struck for a time during his caliphate, then Umar completed it to eighty, and that was each year."

3151 - Ishaq ibn Ibrahim al-Dabari narrated to us, from Abdul Razzaq, from Ibn al-Taymi, who said: Sulayman ibn al-Mughira narrated to me, from Humayd ibn Halaal, from Abdullah ibn al-Saamit, who said: Al-Hakam ibn Amr al-Ghifari led the people in prayer while traveling, with a screen (sutra) in front of him. Some donkeys (humayr) passed between him and his companions, and he repeated the prayer with them. They said: He wanted to do as al-Walid ibn Uqba did when he prayed four rak'ahs with his companions in the morning and then said, "Shall I add more?" So, they caught up with al-Hakam and mentioned this to him. He stopped until the people gathered with him and said: "I repeated the prayer with you because of the donkeys that passed between you." You have made me a comparison to Ibn Abi Mu'ayt, and I ask Allah to improve your conduct and the conduct of your kind, and to grant you victory over your enemy, and to separate me from you." They then left, and nothing was seen on their faces except what they were pleased with. When he finished, he died.

9500 - Narrated to us by Ishaq ibn Ibrahim, from Abdul Razzaq, from Ma'mar, from Abdul Rahman ibn Abdullah from al-Qasim ibn Abdul Rahman, who said: Al-Walid ibn Uqbah delayed the prayer, so he commanded Ibn Mas'ud to instruct the muezzin to call the adhan for the prayer, and then he went ahead and prayed with the people. Al-Walid then sent to him saying: What have you done? Did the Commander of the Faithful send you a message, or have you innovated something? Ibn Mas'ud replied: Neither of those was the case, and Allah and His Messenger (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) did not command us to wait for you in our prayer while you are occupied with your needs.

This was reported to Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) - and he mentioned something similar, except that in Yazid's narration, it was said that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) struck (with his hand) forty times, and Abu Bakr and Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) did so for a time during their caliphates, then Umar completed it with eighty, and each year. Muslim narrated this in his Sahih from the narration of Ibn Aliyyah, from Sa'id ibn Abi 'Arawbah, in a summarized form.

Al-Walid sent a message to him: What compelled you to do what you did? Did a command come to you from the Commander of the Faithful regarding what you did, or was it something you initiated? He replied: No command came to us from the Commander of the Faithful, nor did I initiate anything, but Allah and His Messenger refused to allow us to wait for you with our prayers while you were in need of Him.
- Abu al-Qasim Zaher ibn Tahir narrated to us, saying: Abu Bakr al-Bayhaqi narrated to us, saying: Abu Tahir al-Faqih narrated to us, saying: Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn al-Husayn al-Qattan narrated to us, from Ibrahim ibn al-Harith al-Baghdadi, from Yahya ibn Abi Bakir, from Dawud ibn Abdul-Rahman al-Makki, from Abdullah ibn Uthman ibn Huthaym from al-Qasim ibn Abd al-Rahman, that his father informed him that al-Walid ibn Uqbah led the prayer at the end of it in Kufa while I was sitting with my father in the mosque. Abdullah stood up, started the prayer, and prayed with the people. Al-Walid sent a message to him: What compelled you to do what you did? Did a command come to you from the Commander of the Faithful, and was it out of hearing and obedience, or was it something you initiated? He replied: No command came to us from the Commander of the Faithful, and far be it from me to have initiated anything. Allah and His Messenger refused to allow us to wait for you with our prayers while you attended to your need.
- Abu al-Qasim al-Shahhami narrated to us, saying: Abu Sa'd al-Janzarudi narrated to us, saying: Abu Ahmad Muhammad ibn Muhammad al-Hafiz narrated to us, saying: Abu Arubah al-Harrani narrated to us, from Mukhlid ibn Malik al-Salamsini, from Isma'il ibn Iyash, from Abdullah ibn Uthman ibn Khaytham, from al-Qasim ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Abdullah ibn Mas'ud, from his father, from his grandfather, from the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), who said: "After me, your affairs will be handled by men who extinguish the Sunnah and act upon innovation, delaying the prayer beyond its appointed times." I said: "O Messenger of Allah, what do you command me if I meet them?" He replied: "Ibn Umm Abd asked me this, then he raised his hands until I could see the whiteness of his armpits, and said: 'There is no obedience to one who disobeys Allah.'" Three times I counted. Then, when al-Walid ibn Uqbah ibn Abi Mu'ayt was in Kufa, leading the prayer at the end of it one day, Ibn Mas'ud stood up and established the prayer, praying with the people. Al-Walid sent a message to him: What compelled you to do what you did today? Did a command come to you from the Commander of the Faithful, or was it something you initiated? He replied: No command came to me from your companion, nor did I initiate anything, but Allah and His Messenger refused to allow us to wait for you with our prayers while you were in need.
