- Abu al-Qasim Hibatu Allah ibn Muhammad narrated to us, saying: Abu al-Hasan ibn Ali narrated to us, saying: Ahmad ibn Ja'far narrated to us, from Abdullah ibn Ahmad, who said: My father narrated to us, from Ibrahim ibn Khalid, from Rabah, from Ma'mar, from Abdullah ibn Uthman
from al-Qasim ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Abdullah ibn Mas'ud, from his father, that al-Walid ibn Uqbah led the prayer at the end of it once, and Abdullah ibn Mas'ud stood up and started the prayer, praying with the people. Al-Walid sent a message to him: What compelled you to do what you did? Did a command come to you from the Commander of the Faithful regarding what you did, or was it something you initiated? He replied: No command came to us from the Commander of the Faithful, nor did I initiate anything, but Allah and His Messenger refused to allow us to wait for you with our prayers while you were in need of Him.
- Abu al-Qasim Zaher ibn Tahir narrated to us, saying: Abu Bakr al-Bayhaqi narrated to us, saying: Abu Tahir al-Faqih narrated to us, saying: Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn al-Husayn al-Qattan narrated to us, from Ibrahim ibn al-Harith al-Baghdadi, from Yahya ibn Abi Bakir, from Dawud ibn Abdul-Rahman al-Makki, from Abdullah ibn Uthman ibn Huthaym
from al-Qasim ibn Abd al-Rahman, that his father informed him that al-Walid ibn Uqbah led the prayer at the end of it in Kufa while I was sitting with my father in the mosque. Abdullah stood up, started the prayer, and prayed with the people. Al-Walid sent a message to him: What compelled you to do what you did? Did a command come to you from the Commander of the Faithful, and was it out of hearing and obedience, or was it something you initiated? He replied: No command came to us from the Commander of the Faithful, and far be it from me to have initiated anything. Allah and His Messenger refused to allow us to wait for you with our prayers while you attended to your need.
- Abu al-Qasim al-Shahhami narrated to us, saying: Abu Sa'd al-Janzarudi narrated to us, saying: Abu Ahmad Muhammad ibn Muhammad al-Hafiz narrated to us, saying: Abu Arubah al-Harrani narrated to us, from Mukhlid ibn Malik al-Salamsini, from Isma'il ibn Iyash, from Abdullah ibn Uthman ibn Khaytham, from al-Qasim ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Abdullah ibn Mas'ud, from his father, from his grandfather, from the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), who said: "After me, your affairs will be handled by men who extinguish the Sunnah and act upon innovation, delaying the prayer beyond its appointed times." I said: "O Messenger of Allah, what do you command me if I meet them?" He replied: "Ibn Umm Abd asked me this, then he raised his hands until I could see the whiteness of his armpits, and said: 'There is no obedience to one who disobeys Allah.'" Three times I counted.
Then, when al-Walid ibn Uqbah ibn Abi Mu'ayt was in Kufa, leading the prayer at the end of it one day, Ibn Mas'ud stood up and established the prayer, praying with the people. Al-Walid sent a message to him: What compelled you to do what you did today? Did a command come to you from the Commander of the Faithful, or was it something you initiated? He replied: No command came to me from your companion, nor did I initiate anything, but Allah and His Messenger refused to allow us to wait for you with our prayers while you were in need.
