- .... Al-Bukhari narrated in his Tarikh from the narration of Khalid al-Hadhdha' from Abu Uthman, who said: There was a man playing in the presence of al-Walid, and he killed a person and severed his head. We were amazed, and he reattached the head. Then Jundub al-Azdiy came and killed him. And from the narration of Asim, from Abu Uthman, who said: Jundub ibn Kab killed him.
- .... Al-Bayhaqi narrated in al-Dala'il from the narration of Ibn Wahb, from Ibn Luheiya from Abu al-Aswad: that al-Walid ibn Uqbah was a commander in Iraq, and there was a magician playing in front of him. He would strike a man's head and then shout at him, and the man would rise, going outside, and his head would reattach. People said: Glory be to God, He gives life to the dead. And a righteous man from the Emigrants saw him and looked at him. When the next day came, he picked up his sword and went to play that game again, but the man drew his sword and struck his neck, saying: If he is truthful, let him bring himself back to life. Al-Walid heard of this and had him imprisoned. The keeper of the prison was named Dinar, and he was righteous. He found the man's behavior commendable and said to him: Go, and Allah will never ask me about you.
- .... Ibn al-Sakan narrated from the way of Yahya ibn Kathir, a companion of al-Basri, who said: My father told me: Al-Jurayri narrated to us from Abdullah ibn Buraydah, from his father, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) drove with his companions and kept saying: Jundub, and what is Jundub, until morning. Then his companions said to Abu Bakr: He has uttered two words we do not understand, and they asked him. He replied: He will strike a blow and be a community unto himself. When Uthman became the leader, he appointed al-Walid ibn Uqbah over Kufa, and he seated a man to perform sorcery, showing them that he could give life and take it away. He mentioned the story of Jundub in killing him and that the matter was raised to Uthman, who said to him: Did you draw a sword in Islam? If it were not for what I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) say about you, I would have struck you with the finest sword in Medina, and he ordered him to be taken to the Mountain of Smoke ....

- .... And Ibn Mundah narrated from the path of al-Jurayri, from Abdullah ibn Buraydah, from his father, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) was driving his companions along and kept saying: "Jundab, and what is Jundab? And the one-eyed scholar, Zayd." He was asked about this and replied: "As for Jundab, he will strike a blow in which he will be a nation unto himself, and as for Zayd, he is a man from my Ummah who will enter Paradise with his hand before his body." When al-Walid ibn Uqbah was appointed governor of Kufa during the time of Uthman, he mentioned the story of Jundab in relation to his killing of the magician. And as for Zayd ibn Suhhan, his hand was severed on the day of al-Qadisiyyah, and he was killed on the day of al-Jamal. He said: "Bury me in my garments, for I am in dispute."

- .... Sayan al-Kufi: Dhhabil ibn Ali al-Khuzai mentioned him in his Tabaqat al-Shu'ara (Classes of Poets) and said: He had companionship (with the Prophet) and he used to oversee the prison in Kufa during the caliphate of Uthman. Dhhabil said in the biography of his father, al-Azdiy: When Junayd ibn Zuhayr al-Azdiy, the magician, was struck down in front of al-Walid ibn Uqbah, al-Walid imprisoned him. He then recited some verses about this:
"Is Junayd imprisoned for a blow from a magician * while the companions of the Prophet, the earliest, are killed?"
- It is reported that when Junayd heard of the magician's actions, he donned his sword and entered upon al-Walid, and said to the magician: "Are you able to kill a man and then bring him back to life?" The magician replied: "Yes," so he struck him with the sword and killed him. Al-Walid then ordered his imprisonment, and he was imprisoned. The jailer asked him why he was imprisoned, and he informed him, so he was released. He then went to Medina and informed Uthman, who wrote to al-Walid that you have no authority over him, so al-Walid ceased acting against him.

He would associate with sorcerers, drink alcohol, and was in the company of Abu Zubaid al-Ta'i, a Christian." He continued: "And a sorcerer from the people of Babylon came and began to show them a rope in the mosque that appeared to be extended, with an elephant walking on it and a she-camel running, while people marveled. Then he showed them a rope that seemed to tighten until it went into his mouth and came out of his rear. Then he struck a man's head, and he fell to the side, and he said: 'Get up,' and he did." When Jundub ibn Kab saw this, he took a sword and struck the sorcerer's neck, saying: "Revive yourself!" Al-Walid ordered that he be killed, but men from the Azd stood up and prevented him, saying: "Shall we kill him for a foreign sorcerer?" So he imprisoned him and related the story in full.

- .... Ibrahim ibn Muhammad ibn Mehran al-Faqih and others told us, with their chain of narration, from Muhammad ibn Isa who said: Ahmad ibn Muni' narrated to us, Abu Mu'awiyah narrated to us from Isma'il ibn Muslim, from al-Hasan, from Junadb, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "The punishment for a magician is a strike with the sword." There has been disagreement regarding the attribution of this hadith; some of them elevated it with this chain of narration while others regarded it as a statement of Junadb. The reason for his killing the magician was that al-Walid ibn Uqbah ibn Abi Mu'ayt, when he was the commander in Kufa, had a magician present with him who would perform tricks in front of al-Walid, showing him that he could kill a man and then revive him, and enter into one group and then emerge from another. So he took a sword from a blacksmith, wrapped it, and went to the magician, striking him a blow that killed him. He then said: "Revive yourself," and recited: {Do you now believe in him, despite your earlier dismissal?} (Surah An-Nabi 21:3). This was reported to al-Walid, who said: "I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) say, 'The punishment for a magician is a strike with the sword,'" so al-Walid imprisoned him. However, when the guard saw his prayers and fasting, he freed him. Al-Walid then took the guard and killed him, while others said he merely imprisoned him. It was said that a letter from Uthman came to release him, or that al-Walid imprisoned Junadb, and Junadb's nephew went to the guard and killed him, freeing Junabd. Thus, ....

He replied, "Two men from my Ummah will be mentioned, one of whom will be called Jundab, who will strike a blow that separates truth from falsehood, and the other will be called Zayd, whose limb will precede him to Paradise, and then the rest of his body will follow." He said: "As for Jundab, he was brought before a magician at the hands of al-Walid ibn Uqba, who was showing them that he could perform magic, and he struck him with a sword and killed him." And as for Zayd, his hand was cut off in one of the battles of the Muslims, but he later fought alongside Ali and was killed. Zayd died on the day of the Battle of the Camel with Ali.

- .... As for this Jundab, he entered upon al-Walid ibn Uqbah while there was a sorcerer with him named Abu Shayban, who would take the eyes of the people and then remove their intestines, only to return them. Jundab came up from behind him, struck him, and killed him, and said: "Curse al-Walid, Abu Shayban, and Ibn Hubaysh, the Rider of the Devil!"
