- .... Ibn Asakir narrated
from Sakhr ibn Habib (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was presented with Marwan ibn al-Hakam, who had been born, to bless him, but he did not do so. He said: "Woe to my Ummah from this and the child of this."- .... He also narrated from Salih ibn Abi Salih, from Nafic ibn Jubayr ibn Mut'im,
from his father (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: We were with the Prophet (peace be upon him) when al-Hakam ibn Abi al-As ibn al-As passed by. He said: "Woe to my Ummah from what is in the loins of this one."- .... Al-Tabarani narrated in the Kabir and al-Bayhaqi from Ibn Abbas and Muawiya, both together, and from Abu Ya'la, from Abu Huraira, and Imam Ahmad, and Abu Ya'la, and al-Tabarani in the Kabir, and al-Hakim from Abu Sa'id, and al-Daraqutni, and al-Hakim from Subra ibn Ma'bad, and Na'im ibn Hammad in al-Fitan, and Ibn Asakir
from Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him): that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "When the sons of al-Hakam reach" and in another wording: "the sons of Abi al-As," and in another: "the sons of Umayya," "thirty"; in another wording: "forty men who take the servants of Allah as their subjects and the wealth of Allah as their spoils," and in another: "they will establish dominions and the Book of Allah as a source of confusion," in another: "a mingling," and in another: "the religion of Allah will be a mingling." Ibn Abbas and Muawiya added,
"And when they reach ninety-nine and four hundred, their destruction will be swifter than the chewing of a date."- .... In a narration, Ibn Abbas said to Muawiya: "Yes, O Allah," and mentioned Marwan in need of him, and Marwan returned Abd al-Malik to Muawiya and spoke to him about it. When Abd al-Malik turned to leave, Muawiya said: "O Ibn Abbas, do you not know that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) mentioned this?"
He said, "The four mighty ones," and Ibn Abbas replied: "Yes, O Allah."
