- .... And Ibn Marduyah narrated from Aisha that she said to Marwan ibn al-Hakam: "I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) say to your father and grandfather, 'You are the tree cursed in the Qur'an.'" And this is strange in light of her statement that he said to your father and grandfather, and it is possible that Marwan's grandfather did not witness the time of Prophethood.

- .... From the History of the Judge Shihab al-Din ibn Abi al-Dam said: And in it, an order was issued to write criticisms of Mu'awiya, his son, and his father, and to permit cursing them. Among the things written on this were the following: After praising Allah and sending prayers upon His Prophet, that when Allah sent him as a Messenger, the harshest people in opposing him were the Banu Umayya, and greatest among them in this was Abu Sufyan ibn Harb and his followers from the Banu Umayya. Allah, the Exalted, said in His Mighty Book: {And We did not make the vision that We showed you except as a trial for the people and the accursed tree in the Qur'an (Al-Isra: 60)}. The interpreters unanimously agreed that He meant by it the Banu Umayya.

- .... What he narrated regarding the interpretation of His divine statement: {And We did not make the vision which We showed you except as a trial for the people and the cursed tree in the Quran} (Surah Al-Isra: 60), for the commentators said that he saw the sons of Umayyah leaping onto his pulpit like monkeys. This was the wording of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) that he used to explain the verse to them, and he was displeased by that. Then he said: The cursed tree is the sons of Umayyah and the sons of al-Mughira. This is similar to his (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) statement, "When the sons of Abi al-Aas reach thirty men, they will take the wealth of God as their own and His servants as their dependents."
