Hadith No: 1
Ahmad ibn Hanbal - Musnad of Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal
Musnad of Those Who Spoke Frequently Among the Companions - Musnad of Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (r)
Volume: (7) - Page Number: (418-419)
4414 - Narrated to us by *Iffan who said: Hammad narrated to us, who said: Ata ibn al-Sa'ib narrated to us, from al-Sha'bi, from ibn Mas'ud, that the women were behind the Muslims on the Day of Uhud, tending to the wounded among the disbelievers. He said, "If I had sworn that day, I would have hoped to be truthful, for there is no one of us who desires the world," until Allah, the Almighty, revealed: {And among you are those who desire the Hereafter, and among you are those who desire this world.} (Surah Al-Imran 3:152). When the companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) contradicted and disobeyed what they were commanded, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) was left alone with nine others: seven from the Ansar and two from Quraysh, with him being the tenth. When they began to surround him, he said, "May Allah have mercy on a man who can fend them off for us." Then a man from the Ansar stood up and fought for an hour until he was killed. When they surrounded him again, he said, "May Allah have mercy on a man who can fend them off for us." He kept saying this until all seven were killed. Then the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said to his companions, "We have not been fair to our companions." Then Abu Sufyan came and said, "Exalt Hubal!" The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) replied, "Say, 'Allah is more Exalted and Greater!'" So they said, "Allah is more Exalted and Greater!" Abu Sufyan then said, "We have a 'uzza (a female deity), but you have no 'uzza." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said, "Say, 'Allah is our Protector, and the disbelievers have no protector.'" Then Abu Sufyan said, "This day is like the day of Badr, a day for us and a day against us, a day of victory and a day of defeat, Hanthala for Hanthala, and so-and-so for so-and-so, and so-and-so for so-and-so." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) replied, "They are not equal. Those killed among us are alive, receiving sustenance, while your killed are in the Fire, being punished." Abu Sufyan said, "There was indeed some mutilation among the corpses, although it was not done with the approval of those among us. I did not command it or prohibit it, nor did I like it or dislike it, nor did it sadden me or please me." Then they looked, and if Hamzah's (peace be upon him) belly had been opened and Hind had taken his liver and was chewing it, but she could not bring herself to eat it. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) asked, "Did you eat anything of it?" They said, "No." He said, "Allah would not allow anything of Hamzah to enter the Fire." So the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) took Hamzah (peace be upon him) and prayed over him. A man from the Ansar was brought and placed beside him, and he also prayed over him. The Ansari was raised up, and Hamzah was left until another was brought and placed next to Hamzah, and he prayed over him. Then he was raised, leaving Hamzah, until seventy prayers were offered over him that day.

Ibn Ishaq said: صالح بن كيسان narrated to me, who said: Hind and some women with her began to act out with the corpses, mutilating them by cutting off their ears and noses, until Hind made a collection of ears and noses from this, and she gave her collections to any of the women who were with her, as a reward to Wahshi for killing Hamza. She also sliced open Hamza's belly and chewed on his liver, but she could not swallow it, so she spat it out.

- .... Wahshi said: "As for Muhammad, there is a guardian over him from Allah, and no one will be able to approach him. As for Ali, no one who confronts him will escape death. And as for Hamza, he is a brave man, and perhaps I will encounter him and kill him." Hind would say to Wahshi whenever he prepared to move or passed by: "Take heart, O father of the heavyset one, seek vengeance and be sought!" So he lay in wait for him behind a rock. Hamza charged at the people of the polytheists, and when he returned from his assault and passed by Wahshi, Wahshi struck him with a spear, wounding him, and he fell dead. May Allah have mercy on him and be pleased with him. Ibn Ishaq said: Hind then ripped open Hamza's abdomen and chewed on his liver but could not swallow it, so she spat it out. Then she climbed onto an elevated rock and shouted with a loud voice, saying:
"We avenged you on the Day of Badr, and the war after war is fierce.
I had no patience about Utbah, nor about my brother and uncle, Bakri.
My soul is now satisfied, and my vow is fulfilled; Wahshi has eased the anguish of my heart.
Wahshi will be grateful to me for life, until my bones crumble in my grave."

- .... Ibn Ishaq said: Hind bint Utbah fell upon the slain as Suhayl ibn Kaysan and the women with her narrated, mutilating the corpses of the companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), severing their ears and noses, until Hind made from the ears and noses of the men a collection of trophies and necklaces. She gave her trophies and necklaces, along with her earrings, to a boy named Wahshi, the slave of Jubayr ibn Mut'im. She then burst open the chest of Hamzah and tried to swallow his liver, but she was unable to do so, so she spat it out. Then she climbed onto an elevated rock and screamed at the top of her voice, saying:
"We have repaid you for the Day of Badr, and war, after war, is fraught with fierceness.
I had no patience for what happened to Utbah, nor for my brother, uncle, or the one who came first.
My soul is satisfied, and my vow is fulfilled; I am satisfied, and my heart's rage is quelled."
"Thus, I will thank Wahshi for the rest of my life, until my bones crumble in my grave."

Al-Umari said: Muawiya ibn Amr narrated to us, from Abu Ishaq, from Ibn al-Mubarak, from Isma'il ibn Abi Khalid, from Abdullah al-Bahi, who said: Utbah, Shaybah, and al-Walid stepped forward, and Hamza, Ubaydah, and Ali advanced to meet them. They said: Speak, and we will recognize you. Hamza replied: I am the Lion of God and the Lion of His Messenger. I am Hamza ibn Abd al-Muttalib. He said: A noble match. Ali said: I am Abdullah and the brother of the Messenger of God. Ubaydah said: I am the one among the allies. Then each man stood against another man, and they fought them, and Allah killed them. Hind bint Utbah said about this:
My eyes, shed tears like a flowing stream for the best of Khindaf who did not turn back.
His kin gathered for him in the morning the sons of Hashim and the sons of al-Muttalib,
Making him taste the edge of their swords * and overcoming him after he had already perished.
And Hind had vowed that she would eat from the liver of Hamza.

- .... Ibn Jarir narrated from the route of Al-Aufi, from Ibn Abbas, that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) commanded Umar ibn al-Khattab, saying: "Tell them that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) is pledging allegiance to you on the condition that you do not associate anything with Allah." And Hind bint Utbah ibn Rabi'ah, who had split the belly of Hamzah, was disguised among the women. She said: "If I speak, I will be recognized, and if I am recognized, they will kill me. I have only disguised myself out of fear of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny)." So the women with Hind fell silent and refused to speak. Hind, still disguised, said: "How can you accept something from women that you did not accept from men?" The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) looked at her and said to Umar: "Tell them this, and do not let them steal." Hind replied: "By Allah, I can get from Abu Sufyan what I do not know whether it is permissible for him or not." Abu Sufyan said: "Whatever you have obtained from things that have already happened, or what is yet to come, is permissible for you." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) laughed and recognized her, then called her, and she took his hand and sought refuge with him. He said: "You are Hind." She replied: "Allah has forgiven what is past." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) then turned away from her and said: "And do not engage in fornication."

She had vowed that if she could confront Hamzah ibn Abd al-Muttalib, she would eat his liver. Muhammad then said, When the moment came when Hamzah was wounded and they began to mutilate the dead, they brought a piece of Hamzah's liver, and she took it and started to chew it to eat, but she could not swallow it, so she spat it out." When this reached the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), he said, "Indeed, Allah has forbidden the Fire to taste anything from the flesh of Hamzah ever again." Then Muhammad said, "And this is a trial for poor Hind."

- .... Ibn Jurayj said: The disbelievers on the day of Uhud acted towards the slain Muslims as if they were all dead, except for Ghanzala ibn al-Rahib, because Abu Umar al-Rahib was with Abu Sufyan that day, so they left Ghanzala for that reason. And Kathir ibn Zayd narrated from al-Mutalib ibn Hantab that on the day of Uhud, Hind bint Utbah and the women with her were mutilating the slain Muslims, cutting off their noses and slashing open their bellies, and severing their ears, except for Ghanzala, for his father was with the polytheists. Hind also sliced open Hamza's abdomen, removed his liver, and began to chew it, then spat it out. The Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "If it had entered her stomach, she would not enter the Fire." He added: No one was treated as Hamza was; Hind cut off his hand, mutilated his nose, severed his ears, and sliced open his belly. When the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) saw this, he said: "If I prevail over the Quraysh, I will certainly avenge myself on thirty of them." Then Allah, the Exalted, revealed: {And if you retaliate, let it be with an equivalent of that with which you were harmed. And if you are patient, it is better for those who are patient} (Surah an-Nahl 16:126).

- .... Ibn Ishaq said: And Hind bint Utbah fell into the situation as my father, Salih ibn Kaysan, informed me, along with the women who were with her, acting out against the slain from the companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), mutilating the bodies by cutting off ears and noses until Hind made from the ears and noses of men a collection of trophies and necklaces, and she gave her trophies and necklaces and earrings to a young boy, Jubayr ibn Mut'am's servant. She also pierced the belly of Hamza and chewed on his liver, but she could not swallow it, so she spat it out. Then she climbed onto an overlooking rock and shouted at the top of her voice, saying:
We avenged you on the Day of Badr, and war after war will have its price.
There was no patience in me about Utbah, nor about my brother, uncle, and father.
My soul is satisfied, and my vow is fulfilled; I am appeased, and the rage in my heart is quenched.
Wahshi will be grateful for my life until my bones decay in my grave.

- .... And Muhammad ibn Umar mentioned, followed by al-Tubuli in al-Imtā' : that when Wahshi killed Hamza, he sliced open his belly and took out his liver, then came to Hind bint Utbah and said: "This is the liver of Hamza." She chewed it, then spat it out. She removed her clothes and jewelry and gave them to Wahshi, promising him that if he came to Mecca, she would give him ten dinars. She stayed with him until she showed him the place of Hamza's death, where she cut a piece from his liver, and she severed his nose and cut off his ears, then made them into bracelets and armlets, and wore them as ornaments until she came to Mecca with them.

- .... Ibn Sa'd said: Huwdha ibn Khalifah narrated to us, saying: 'Awf ibn Muhammad narrated to us, and he said: I was informed that Hind, the daughter of Utbah ibn Rabi'ah, came on the day of Uhud and had vowed that if she could overpower Hamza, she would eat from his liver. They brought her a piece of Hamza's liver, and she took it and began to chew it to eat, but she could not swallow it, so she spat it out.' When this reached the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), he said: "Indeed, Allah, the Exalted, has forbidden the Fire to ever taste anything from the flesh of Hamza." And among those present was a man who said, "O Allah, if Muhammad is on the truth, then cause the earth to swallow him," meaning himself. And the earth did swallow him, as narrated by al-Bazzar with a good chain of narration from Buraydah.
