Ibn Hibban - Al-Majruhin min al-Muhaddithin wa-al-Du'afa' wa-al-Matrukin
Chapter on the letter N - 1127: Al-Nu'man ibn Thabit Abu Hanifa al-Kufi
Volume: (3) - Page Number: (60 > 66)
- Al-Nu'man ibn Thabit Abu Hanifa al-Kufi: The master of opinion, narrating from Ata' and Nafi', was born in the year eighty in the outskirts of Kufa. His father was a freedman of a man from Banu Rabiah of Taym Allah from Najd, known as the Banu Qafl. His father was emancipated and was a baker for Abdullah ibn Qafl. Abu Hanifa died in the year 150 in Baghdad, and his grave is in the cemetery of al-Khayzuran.
-
He was a man of evident debate and ظاهر الورع. -
He narrated one hundred and thirty hadiths with chains of narration, and he had no other hadith in the world besides these. He erred in one hundred and twenty of them, either by being mistaken in their chains of narration or by altering their texts without realizing it. When his errors outweighed his correct narrations, he deserved to be excluded from being regarded as reliable in reports.- Furthermore, it is not permissible to rely on him
because he was an advocate of al-Irja' (postponement), and an advocate of innovations (bida') cannot be considered reliable. This is the consensus of all our imams, and I am not aware of any disagreement among them on this matter. However, the imams of Muslims and the pious in religion in all regions and lands criticized him and expressed disapproval of him, except for one individual after another. We have mentioned what was narrated about him in this regard in the book (Tanbih 'ala al-Tamwih), which suffices to avoid repeating it in this book, though I will mention some brief points that can serve as evidence for what lies beyond them:
- Among them, Zakariya ibn Yahya al-Saji narrated to us in Basra, saying: Bundar and Muhammad ibn Ali al-Muqaddami both narrated to us, saying: Mu'adh ibn Mu'adh al-Anbari narrated to us, saying: I heard Sufyan al-Thawri
say, "Abu Hanifa was given a chance to repent from disbelief twice."- Ahmad ibn Yahya ibn Zuhayr narrated to us in Tustar, saying: Ishaq ibn Ibrahim al-Baghawi narrated to us, saying: Al-Hasan ibn Abi Malik narrated to us from Abu Yusuf,
who said, "The first to say that the Quran is created was Abu Hanifa," referring to his statements in Kufa.
- Al-Husayn ibn Idris al-Ansari narrated to us, saying: Sufyan ibn Waki' narrated to us, saying: Umar ibn Hammad ibn Abi Hanifa narrated to us, saying: I heard my father
say, "I heard Abu Hanifa say, 'The Quran is created.'" Then Ibn Abi Layla wrote to him: "Either you retract, or I will take action against you." He replied, "I have retracted." When he returned home, I said, "O father, is this not your view?" He said, "Yes, my son, and it is my view today as well, but they are thwarted by taqiyya (dissimulation)."
- Ahmad ibn Ali ibn al-Muthanna narrated to us in Mosul, saying: Abu Nashit Muhammad ibn Harun narrated to us, saying: Mahbub ibn Musa narrated to us from Yusuf ibn Asbat,
who said, "Abu Hanifa said, 'If the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) had met me, he would have accepted many of my opinions. Is religion not but sound reasoning?'"- Ali ibn Abd al-Aziz al-Abli narrated to us, saying: Amr ibn Muhammad al-Ansi narrated to us from Abu al-Bakhtari, who said: I heard Ja'far ibn Muhammad say: "O Allah, we have inherited this prophethood from our father Ibrahim, the Friend of the Merciful, and we have inherited this house from our father Isma'il, the son of the Friend of the Merciful, and we have inherited this knowledge from our grandfather Muhammad (peace be upon him and his holy progeny).
So, make my curse and the curse of my forefathers and ancestors upon Abu Hanifa."- Muhammad ibn al-Qasim ibn Hatim narrated to us, saying: Al-Khalil ibn Hind narrated to us, saying: Abd al-Samad ibn Hasan narrated to us, saying: I was with Sufyan al-Thawri in Mecca by the Maqam Ibrahim when a man came and said, "Abu Hanifa has died." He replied, "Go to Ibrahim ibn Tahman and tell him." So the messenger went, and he said, "I found him asleep." He said, "Woe to you! Go and wake him and give him the good news, for the trialer of this nation has died.
By Allah, no one was born in Islam more harmful to them than Abu Hanifa, and by Allah, Abu Hanifa would have been a greater severer of the ties of Islam, breaking it strand by strand, than Qahṭaba al-Tai with his sword."- Adam ibn Musa narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Isma'il al-Bukhari narrated to us, saying: Nu'aym ibn Hammad narrated to us, saying: Abu Ishaq al-Fazari narrated to us,
"I heard Sufyan al-Thawri - when the news of Abu Hanifa's death came - say, 'Praise be to Allah who has relieved the Muslims from him. He was indeed unraveling Islam, strand by strand.'"- Abd al-Kabir ibn Umar al-Khattabi narrated to us in Basra, saying: Ali ibn Junadb narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Amir al-Tai narrated to us, saying: "I saw as if I were standing on the steps of the Mosque of Damascus with a group of people, and an elderly man, wrapped in a cloak, came out, saying: 'O people, this is not the religion of Muhammad.'" I said to a man next to me, "Who are these two elders?"
He replied, "This is Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, veiling Abu Hanifa."
