Ibn Sa'd - al-Tabaqat al-Kubra - Classes of the Kufans
Fifth Class - 2631: Abu Hanifa

- Abu Hanifa, whose name was al-Nu'man ibn Thabit, was a freedman of the Banu Taym Allah ibn Thalaba from Bakr ibn Wa'il, and he was the most prominent scholar of opinion (ra'y). They unanimously agreed that he died in Baghdad in either Rajab or Sha'ban in the year 150 AH (After Hijra) during the caliphate of Abu Ja'far. Muhammad ibn Umar narrated to us, saying: Hamad ibn Abi Hanifa informed me, saying: Abu Hanifa died at the age of seventy years. Muhammad ibn Umar also said: I was in Kufa on the day he died, expecting his arrival, when news of his death came to us and he was considered weak in hadith.

- Muhammad ibn Sa'id ibn Nabat narrated to us, saying: Abdullah ibn Muhammad al-Qal'i narrated to us, saying: Abu Ali Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Suwaff narrated to us, from Bishr ibn Musa al-Asdi, who said: Abdullah ibn al-Zubair al-Humaydi narrated to us, who said: Sufyan ibn Uyayna said, "The affairs of the people remained balanced until Abu Hanifa altered that in Kufa, and al-Batti in Basra, and Rabi'a in Medina."

Abdullah ibn Muhammad narrated to us, saying: Abdullah ibn Dawud narrated to us, saying: Abu Zakariya al-Naysaburi narrated to us, who said: I heard Ibn Abd al-Hakam say: I heard al-Shafi'i say: "I looked into a book of Abu Hanifa's that contained two hundred and twenty or thirty pages, and I found eighty pages on ablution and prayer in which there was either a contradiction to the Book of Allah, or to the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), or a disagreement in opinion, or inconsistency, or a violation of reasoning."
